This is an absolute American cinematic classic, never to be equaled. The way Newman plays out the drunk and cheats the Irish crime boss at cards, adding insult to injury, it is truly a complete blow out when he flashes 4 jacks. to beat the 3's 9's cold deck low stack after a break. That Newman could pull that switch off defies description but it is brought off brilliantly. The ultimate con. Unreal
Can anyone help me locate a 1970s TV movie about a $1 million poker game? The bad guy serially kidnaps top competitor poker players, & force each victim to play him in a 2-person poker duel that was for $1million to the winner, & death to the loser. The bad guy had a cheat built in that always made him win. Finally he was outwitted by a 'good guy' poker player, who feigned being tricked into a final shooting duel, but he got the real gun from the shooter behind him. Seemed like a PBS type movie
Not only was Newman a great actor, he was also one of the greatest and most charitable human beings in the world. Its estimated that even now, after his death, he still donates more to charity than any other celebrity due to the profits generated from his "Newman's Own" products. 100% of the profits are donated, much of them to underprivileged kids. The man had a heart of gold and his legacy will endure well beyond the silver screen.
Theres no way the guy with Quad 9's should of been allowed to buy in for more during a hand. I remember someone trying to do this during a cash game (out of ignorance), which was a monstrous tell that he had the nuts.
"HAHAHAHA! Don't worry about it! They wouldn't let ya in here, if ya wasn't a chump! Lombard will be joining ya in a few minutes" LMAO I love this scene.
Superb cinematic entertainment . . . so ill how Gondorff flips the script on the scam. The acting and writing are superb but what really impresses me is how they allude to his sleight of hand to retrieve the quad Jacks, but ever so SLIGHTLY! I try to avoid cliches but, from the looks of this scene solely, THEY DON'T MAKE 'EM LIKE THIS ANYMORE!
Sir Robert Shaw is the heavy weight talent in this film... he's the headliner... Newman and Redford were still wet behind the ears... after all, Shaw was known globally, had been in many critically acclaimed productions and was one of the best Bond villians... RIP Shaw
@JessOnTheRun - maybe but one actor can't carry a movie if the others aren't picking up the slack....in this movie you have some of the best character actors around at the time plus Newman and Redford might have been green but they knew their shit....this is one of those few movies where everything came together and produced a magical work of art!!!
@fowzie777 yeh ..imo we just dont have actors like newman anymore...i mean you literally were enthralled while they were up there on the screen...they would seem almost transcendental ...movies like hud and the hustler...just leave me without words really...and i was born in 1971...and i say these new guys better study up...cause they aint cuttin the mustard nowadays
@Arrested101 Goof: In an earlier scene, the conductor calls the game as "table stakes". This means that, theoretically, Robert Shaw should not have been allowed to go to the bank for $10,000 more.
One of my alltime favorite movies. Good to see real draw poker instead of this Texas hold-em stuff. Too bad this cuts short just before my favorites lines:
Shaw: "Your boss is quite a card player, Mr. Kelly. How does he do it?"
apparently they had to re-shoot this scene because the guy playing doyle lonnigan switched the decks so discreetly and fast the camera didn't even pick it up
one of my fave scenes in movie history...you can feel the tension and smell the atmosphere..robert shaw is incredible and mr newman is pretty damn good!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@mrspank35 Without any question one of the most classic scenes in American cinematic history. "Don't worry about it pal, (laughing absurdly) they wouldn't let ya in here if you weren't a chump. Lombard'll be joining you in a couple of minutes...."
