Forget about taxes. With or without incremental tax changes the major brake on the economy is in two parts. First the regulatory atmosphere is withering and secound the istability and uncertainty is crippling. Economics is all about what is between the ears. Our future is dependent on our perception. Please would someone please lead.
December 9, 2008 Paulson convinced Bush to create the stimulus. Like all half baked ideas Bush got conned into (see: Cheney/Iraq) the Republicans spun the Paulson and Bush stimulus on it's head, creating a tone that it wasn't Bush and Paulson's fault. But it was Bush and Paulson's idea, right or wrong. Boehner would sell his mother's false teeth to keep his job. He lies like a rug.
What I want to know is: what is "conservative"? What is it Republicans are trying to conserve? Energy? not. When I build a house of bricks, I don't want to be conservative about how much cement I use between the bricks. I want to make sure to have enough glue to keep the thing together or else the whole thing falls down. Conservatives are only trying to conserve one thing and that's a WHITE house. Don't try and fool me. Conserve what? Ideas for a rainy day? Just say no? Conserve what?
Today, very well expressed by the President: we regulate how slaughterhouses work and how food is processed and distributed so kids don't drink spoiled milk. We can afford that, we can afford wars. Republicans say we can't afford anything and then put a cheap-ass bandaid to the problem that needs real attention until the thing explodes into a dirty festering mess that, yes, we probably can't afford to fix but could have afforded to prevent. Like spoiled milk, the prevention is cheaper.
Republicans merely side with the bosses. Republicans believe the rich are wise old men who should trickle their wealth down to the little guy. Republicans only trust fat cats. They think the little guy is a bum too stupid to do anything because they got elected by tricking the dopes who put them in office. Republicans believe in small government because they will have less to do on the job. They don't want to help you, they only want to bolster the boss's power to fire and not hire your buddy.
Interesting how Republicans respond to social programs as if they have never benefited from them. Like, Republicans never use unemployment insurance? We know they don't use social programs like schools or libraries simply by the way they write and speak. Republicans installed social programs for Iraqis, why are they so bad for Americans? Republicans laundered taxpayer capital in Iraq and then put us behind the 8 ball with communist china, our competition. Bush and Paulson allowed bad mortgages.
@guywalker29 Will you idiots stop bringing up: roads, schools, police & fire dept.s, etc.? Those are necessary & are not being debated. Social programs cost money, and the union jobs they create - with bloated pensions - are breaking State budgets. The American people have proved over & over that we want those "feel good" programs, we just don't want to pay for it.
We need to grow up. If we don't, that borrowed $ will cost a lot more, or it won't be available at all.
You pay for it, my friend. You pay for the libraries that Glen Beck uses, you pay for the public schools to educate your grandchildren so that you don't have to support them, you pay for the military for social programs our soldiers die installing in foreign countries so the world can utilize resources. You want to tell me you are against insurance we co-operate in, like unemployment insurance? Progressive feel good movements gave women the right to vote and black people the right to live.
I understand the concept of taxes & services. We can't afford what we're doing, and we really can't afford what the left are proposing. I don't defend golden parachutes of any kind. But most of those "fat cats" money isn't coming str8 from tax revenues, unlike the example I gave. What I said was - we have to figure out how to pay for the programs we already have, many of which are in the red, before we start proposing huge new programs. If you can't figure that out, argue with someone else.
The Republicans need to figure it out. They can't because it is unavoidable. Some problems are big, kirdotorg. Sometimes running a Little League Team can be complicated. Sometimes town snow removal can be complicated. Not all problems are simple. Sometimes it takes a lot of money to create good growth instead of quick fixes that create wasteful spending later on and unnecessary expenditures down the road. Republicans have backed us up so far because they continually invest in bad growth.
Republicans cannot get used to the idea that quick fixes are bad growth. Republicans stress for less, but situations in the 21st Century are complex. Like Reagan's idea of laser beams in space called Star Wars anti missile idea, it's childish. A web of laster beams in space was a phallusy, a incantation. What Republicans still clutch to are the huddled masses of immigrants and deadbeats bleeding the country dry. Now in the 21st Century the bosses are feeding on the middle class with the GOP.
If stimulus $ really funded private sector jobs, then you might have a point. But they don't. What those funds have done (and other democrat proposed bills) is hang onto (and create more) gov't jobs. Those same jobs that are straining state budgets. You're not a serious person - Guy. You talk to me like I'm a 10 yr old, when it's clear to me that I have a much better grasp of reality than you. I'm not talking about what the GOP is doing. I'm talking about what we need to do.
If you don't like the stimulus package you have Bush and Paulson to thank. They laundered taxpayer money in Iraq where they deem democratic ideals but only set up social programs. Republicans cut taxes at wartime. Nobody in their right mind or out has ever in the history of the universe done something that stupid. We went broke. We are now behind the 8 ball with communist China because of it. Republicans went to war on a credit card. They did the same thing with bad mortgage credit. Republicans!
After 8 years of Republican tactics, of course there are no jobs. Of course the bosses are not going to put them out there. Republicans had 8 years to get America to work, but did they build the Freedom Tower? No. Did they bring in Bin Laden like Bush said T.Franks would do? No. But they sure spent the surplus they came into office with. Taxpayer capital that is now Haliburton capital. Republicans ideas of capital means keeping it up stairs with the fat cats who administer it in small doses.
The war should have been paid for, but that had nothing to do with our dire economy. It was a housing bubble, it popped. It was caused by irresponsible lenders, buyers and, politicians - like democrats - B Frank & M Waters - & many more from both parties.
"We went broke."? We've been broke, we're just going more broke & getting worse faster. Your rhetoric is as tired & hypocritical as listening to some union "fat cat" try to stir up the troops.
I didn't say there was no connection between cutting taxes, and our debt to China. The tax cuts were to stimulate the economy - we were in a recession. And we didn't "spend our surplus" on Iraq. The surplus was due to a ridiculous stock surge & the sudden wealth it created. The internet bubble burst when Bush came into office & so did the surplus. It was a false surplus - based on unsustainable projections. Anyone with a memory & common sense knows this. You are not a serious person - Guy.
The Freedom Tower hasn't been built because of bureaucratic red tape. It's a bi-product of liberalism. Presidents are not real estate developers. The people holding up the project are liberals like you, only they are slightly more sane than you.
Some people will be coming for you soon - Guy. They'll be wearing white coats. Don't resist them, they are your friends. Just calm down and wait.
You want to make it out that Republicans didn't promise us Bin Laden. You want to make it out that Bush didn't create the stimulus package with Paulson. You want to pretend that Republicans called Martin Luther King Jr. a communist. You want to make it out that Nixon didn't hang around with known gangster Bebe Reboso. You are more comfortable calling me names as a child in a sandbox does. You simply would like to ignore the fact that Republicans only care about money trickling from the rich.
You think that we here in NYC were not told by Bush and his administration that he would personally see to it that we spit in the eye of the terrorists by building the Freedom Tower? Bush and the Republicans dragged us into a war over WMD that were not there, killed scores of civilians and American soldiers, installed social programs for rebuilding roads and schools and water and buildings destroyed during the invasion and then tell me Bush isn't a real estate developer? You are correct.
kirotorg, we now know: tax cuts are not good growth. Republicans cut taxes during wartime which put us completely behind the 8 ball, and Republicans give tax cuts to the rich which stimulates growth for a short period of time, but now we know tax cuts for the rich and for the banks and big investment firms is BAD GROWTH. Republicans continue to operate within the Reagan Trickle Down Theory which we know doesn't work. All it does is give those in power more power and impoverishes the poor.
Fat cats are getting the bloated golden parachutes. Who told you the little guy is bleeding the country dry when insurance companies are making billions off of blowing sick people off the planet. Who told you that the little guy has more power than fat cats who run companies and who hire and fire. I'll tell you who: crummy Republicans who want smaller government so they don't have to do anything on the job. Nobody is getting fat pensions except corporate heads who have and hold the jobs.
This was an excellent speech by Leader Boehner. It was incredible just how accurate his predictions about the abject failure of this so-called Democrat stimulus bil have become. There can never be job growth in a plan that increases the size of government. I loved the part when he dropped that asinine bill on the floor of the House. His incredible speech made the public begin to take notice of the incompetent and reckless spending policies of the power-hungry Democrat Congress. Excellent job!

How does giving our jobs to illegal aliens help Americans?? It Doesn't!!! Half, if not a whole more, of that bill is total junk and completely wasteful spending.
Ruben, enlighten us on how you're improving the ghetto areas of urban Chicago. How many new jobs have you helped to create? How many new businesses have been created? Do you promote Welfare programs or programs to liberate people from the bondage of Welfare? How many abortion clinics are there in urban Chicago? How many people are losing their houses in urban Chicago because they were given a sub-prime mortgage for a house they couldn't afford ?
Hello schmarcie, I can certainly do that. I tend to look at the glass half full v. half empty. From what I see with your statements, I guess we agree that because of the lack of oversight and de-regulation strongly promoted by the Republicans we saw the housing crisis that we are seeing today. In the spirit of solidarity and hope, I have been working on creating public policies that will turn around the last 8 years of backward policies. While, I dont have all the answers, I welcome your ideas.
You're confusing "oversight" & "regulation". The Democrats regulation agenda is exactly what caused this crisis --- telling banks who they must lend to
Republicans sponsored S190 that would've provided more Fannie/Freddie oversight......the Democrats blocked it
Go research that if you really want to become informed --- also watch the YouTube video of Dems in their own words "Democrats Fannie Freddie"
Let's get Sarah Palin in there as vice president, eh? That will make everything better! Anyways I didn't expect someone that worked for an oil company to support Obama.
the republican "ideas" is got got us into this mess in the first place. I'm glad that they are in the minority, and if they continue to serve as a road block to progress, they will cease to exist or be relevant.
in the late '90's the liberals, including acorn represented by obama, sued banks for not providing credit to those you would not otherwise qualify. it was the liberals that insisted freddy mack and fannie mae buy subprime mortgages without proper oversight. it was liberals that resisted further oversight and said fannie mae and freddy mack were not at risk. it was this liberal support of risk filled sub-prime loans that drove the economy into the trouble it's in today.
What did Bush do with the Clinton surplus?Spent it on war.Republicans have proven themselves that they can not govern. They don't know how to spend.Oh, and didn't the repubs go against the Clinton tax plan in the early 90s?Didn't that plan work and got us out of a deficit? The repubs have always been proven wrong. They will see again when our economy flourishes in a couple of years.
what clinton surplus? you mean the mony's taken from social security to create the surplus? and it was the republican lead congress that produced the bill that lowered taxes. and your right that republican drafted law did boost the economy. you see in a couple of years when we are swimming in a devalued dollar with run away inflation. i just hope and pray it all works out for pelosi's mice.

Hi ruben,
!st of all stop playing the political blame game & answer these Questions & hear your plans.
1 How many new jobs have you helped to create?
2 How many new businesses have been created?
3 Do you promote Welfare programs or programs to liberate people from the bondage of Welfare?
4 How many abortion clinics are there in urban Chicago?
5 How many people are losing their houses in urban Chicago because they were given a sub-prime mortgage for a house they couldn't afford ?

You have your facts so incredibly backwards

Clinton surplus?? LOL!!
Please also learn a bit from history:
DEMOCRATS have controlled Congress for the past 2 yrs
REPUBLICANS controlled Congress 6 of the 8 years under Clinton
Remember the days of DEMOCRAT Jimmy Carter with a DEMOCRATIC Congress

And when did the economy start going to crap... in 2006 when the democrats took control again...
Everyone deserves to own a house no matter their economic situation...
