I recall the company that did the bad maintenance tried to blame the design of the plane itself, and the crash hurt DC-10 sales. McDonnell Douglas never recovered and was eventually bought out by Boeing. Horrible day, most of all for the people on the plane :(
There is another You Tube video that explains a deeper investigation into the crash. Investigators found that torn off engine caused the loss of the plane's hydraulic fluid which retracted the slats and made it impossible to fly the plane.
Great effort by the pilot. But engine gone and leading edge of wing damaged is certainly interrupting air flow. Full of fuel so early after takeoff..... Just a bad combination to overcome.
@JUSTREALCOOL But check the full report... AA's manual mandated a 14 degree climb attitude after one engine was lost on take-off but no one considered that the loss could be a separation with asymmettrical slat retraction; had the climb angle been kept lower, allowing an airspeed in excess of the 159 kts threshold, the flight could have been brought back for a safe landing, but the pilots had no way of knowing what had actually happened... Too damn bad....
Im a realist....We are taking about industry that has already calculated the cost of a human life, has lobbied congress for limits on death pay outs to save their profits. An industry that balances maintenance cost with safety, and and industry that will take into account deaths over cost. You see its better to pay out $50 million in death benefits, than pay 500 million in maintenance. Check out alaskan air crash...everyone died because of $1 worth of
Apparently, back then the DC10's had on board tv's that showed the actual take off. It is possible that the passengers were watching what was happening to their plane. How terrifying and heartbreaking. It was NOT the pilots fault.
if you have u probably nvr flown a 747 u cant possibly see althe way back to the wing, and most pilots dont know what its like to have a engine fall off. they know how a engine failure feels like, and this was probably pretty close to that same feeling
they should make ecsape seats that shoot out into the sky with parachutes in every plane made, if im lucky enough to make a plane company il add that feature to every single plane, if they do it to fighter jets, then they should do it for passenger jets, even tho it would cost alot
@johnmunoz18 Yep, increase your flight costs by about $600 per trip. And wont work either at this altitude. What an idiot. Please get some facts and education before showing the world what an idiot you are.
@12SamHughes a sign will come up infront of your seat saying "Please look under your seat and pick up the parachute" and the passenger will strap it on, then BOOM your in the sky. BUt in the begining of the flight the flight attendeants will show you how to use it!
American didn't purchase an additional stick shaker for the right seat. When they lost the engine, the primary instruments for the captain were inoperable. they could have reset them by pushing as circuit breaker, instead they utilized the 1st officers instruments. the copilot was flying the plane, he reduced speed, induced a stall, didn't have a stick shaker and crashed the plane.

they shouldn't have tried to gain altitude... Bringing throttles to idle and trying to land on the field ahead would have been a better chance of survival.
this is why i dont get on planes and never will .... hello cruise shipp .. sho at least i can swim if the boat sinks ... getting in a plane crash is the scariest thing
plain crashes are news because they are the exception. what is really frightening is the probability to crash on land with cars...seriously, flying is the safest way to travel
the reason why the plane banked and couldn't recover with maximum aileron and rudder it is because with a flap on one side, with the flap on the left side retracted, the plane banked uncontrollably unless someone could retract the right wing flap
@Zenigundam well it's hard to stop a plane that big since by the time they start lifting off the ground they are to far to stop in time so they would crash anyway
I so remembered when that happened. I actually was on a flight bound for LAX 2 days later. I was on leave from a Military Academy in WI when that happened. Man did I have the shits when we took off from the very same runway and seeing the crash site below was pretty heart wrenching.
It happened Memorial Day Weekend 1979. The engine took out their Hydraulic System,so they had no control of the plane.FAA grounded all DC10s for almost a year.
@Toniindahaus1 U cant land right away because the plane is fully loaded with fuel that should have been burned off during flight .landing means excess weight, means crash and they couldnt do anything their to low
Lol! The opposite is true. Nothing on tv is real. You should realize that tv and reality is not the same. and history channel is less real that you think. its biased stories.
Unapproved alright, they were using forklifts to install engines and one cracked a pylon flange. The killed them because they didn't like the time consuming sling gear. They should try working on french aircraft for a while.
Incorrect engine removal procedures cracked the mounting bolt bosses that held the engine pylon to the wing. Maintenance crews were supposed to remove the engine from the pylon, then the pylon from the wing. They were using an unapproved method of removing both at once.
Don't worry the accident happened at the JFK airport. Flying still the most secure method of transportation. Have some Presidente and Barcelo rum, have a good vacation.
@Dystopiologist this is the airline's fault i think. i believe that they should have spent more on trying to maintain their plane. pilots can only do so much. I think engines should be easier to check so that when a plane is sitting to take on passengers or has some extended down time, a crew should check all major systems of the aircraft
It was indeed the airlines' fault. If I remember correctly, maintenence tried to cut corners while removing and refitting the left engine, damaging the mounting in the process. When the engine ripped off, that wing lost hydraulic fluid, causing the flaps to retract on that side only. At that point, there was nothing they realistically could have done.
If I were a pilot, i would stop the engine, try to glide the plane and slowly land it. I think would be interesting to put gears up if the landing space is irregular.
No, what I think twoeyes meant was that there have been 2 flight 191 that have crashed. This one was AA and DC10. The other one was a L1011 from Delta
This video is messed up because this accindent happeed in the 70s and at the begining u can see a Delta airlines boeing 737-800 which was out for purchase in 1998.
That is sad i can't believe they got that far up in the air and didn't notice those poor people were more in likely like what the hell is going on and looked out the window and said oh shit. I would be scared poor people.
American was fined 500,000 dollars but their insurance paid them $25,000,000. So that's 24.5 million in profit. I am not sure if the guy who made the decision to use a faulty maintenance procedure that caused this accident actually got promoted.
You're fucking ignorant! What is everything a fucking conspiracy with people? 100+ people lost there lives, the company lost a hundred some million dollar plane and you're saying they did it themselves?
I am sure it wasn't a conpiracy. However, with the financial penalty being nothing more than a token gesture, where is the incentive to do better? Hundreds of lives were lost and no one was held accountable.
We need to start holding companys accountable for their actions or it will just happen again. I don't mean just plane crashes, but dikes underdesigned in New Orleans, Bridges that collapse after ten years, balconies that fall after a few years, etc. etc.
Why would the engines be designed so close to the ground? Any slightest movement while beginning takeoff after 80 knots can cause extreme danger as seen in this video.. Notice right before the engine came off the wing slightly tipped down to the left and the engine touched the ground and came off....
The design is perfectly safe. This accident happened because American used more "direct" method for servicing engines. They did not follow the manufactures recommended procedure and slowly created damage to the area which supports the engine. It finally couldn't hold any longer on this flight and finally gave. American airlines was fined $500,000.00 for not following the correct procedure....other airliners were using the same technique and had their aircraft grounded.
it will B a good idea if,the pilots can see the Acft from out side, how?by installing vidio cameras from the out side of the planes and, that will help a lotof help 2 determine the damage but,the air liners R cheap!
I used to fly pretty often to different branch offices in different cities. My secretaries all observed that at the start of each trip,I would clear my desk and update notes on outstanding work making sure that should I never return, everything is ready for a successor to take over. They never asked but they knew I had a fear of flying of sorts.
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
shrt cuts lead 2 didaster,i think FAA should enforce video cameras in the cockpit so that the pilot can see the wings engine and, fuselage of the plane as well the passangers!what you pilots think of my idea?
As a Delta flight attendant I am appauled at the ludicous comments made. This is a simulated video of a terrible crash. You people are pathectic. Many of my friends and "family" were on this flight. Shame on you.
This is a video about one of the worst air disasters EVER, and the comments posted have nothing to do with it...why dont you take your petty arguments somewhere else and have some respect for the 271 dead people of the crash!
I recall the company that did the bad maintenance tried to blame the design of the plane itself, and the crash hurt DC-10 sales. McDonnell Douglas never recovered and was eventually bought out by Boeing. Horrible day, most of all for the people on the plane :(

You're fucking ignorant! What is everything a fucking conspiracy with people? 100+ people lost there lives, the company lost a hundred some million dollar plane and you're saying they did it themselves?
Stinkywookiee 3 years ago 3
I am sure it wasn't a conpiracy. However, with the financial penalty being nothing more than a token gesture, where is the incentive to do better? Hundreds of lives were lost and no one was held accountable.
We need to start holding companys accountable for their actions or it will just happen again. I don't mean just plane crashes, but dikes underdesigned in New Orleans, Bridges that collapse after ten years, balconies that fall after a few years, etc. etc.

the financial fine from the FAA is nothing conpared to what they would pay in lawsuits due to the failure of due dilligence.
plus, since AA just lost an airplane, they would have to use insurance to buy the replacement. Certainly no profit.
Details details.

Why would the engines be designed so close to the ground? Any slightest movement while beginning takeoff after 80 knots can cause extreme danger as seen in this video.. Notice right before the engine came off the wing slightly tipped down to the left and the engine touched the ground and came off....
steelekilla101 3 years ago

Another example of how dangerous and how crash prone Doglas planes are . Never fly whit them if you want to live longer than that flight trip.

As a Delta flight attendant I am appauled at the ludicous comments made. This is a simulated video of a terrible crash. You people are pathectic. Many of my friends and "family" were on this flight. Shame on you.

No wind shear. Just a mechanical failure.

This is a video about one of the worst air disasters EVER, and the comments posted have nothing to do with it...why dont you take your petty arguments somewhere else and have some respect for the 271 dead people of the crash!
