I totally agree, even though I've never thought of it that deeply before. I haven't said the pledge in years (I am in 9th grade now) and now, recently, my newer teacher is forcing everyone to stand up during it because, apparently, it is "school requirements", despite the fact there is absolutely NOTHING that says that in the handbook. So, I stand, due to the fact I do not want to start an arguement, but I put my hand over my mouth and do not look at the flag while everyone else says it.I really

WOW... you're an amazing mother with an amazing son! You are obviously doing something right :)
But, I think you should tell them that, one day as the smart man he will grow up to be, he can help change this world and that there will come a time when he can recite the pledge as a proud American.
(I hope that time is sooner rather than later :) )
wow your kids are smart! cool story! i stopped doing it too (im in high school) and nobody rly cares in hs. but in middle school they would make u do it, which rly bothered me, b/c they shouldn't force u..
i too have problems with "liberty and justice 4 all" but also the "under god" part b/c it goes against the 1st amendment.
I never thought of it that way either. All I know is that it is so awesome that your children-for one thing are so very perceptive, and another thing are so brave to stick up for your family that way. Gina I so love to watch your videos because it feels so great to know that there are other people experiencing the same kind of things as I am with my daughter.
I think that this is really cool because instead of just mindlessly parroting the pledge your kids are actually thinking about what it means to be an American. Of course I know there are many conservative folks that would be horrified at your kids and you not saying the pledge they are completely missing the point of what it means to live in a democracy where you have freedom of speech and concience. Kudos to your kids and you and your spouse!
Your son sounds very smart, I myself am 14 and lesbian and not once have I heard the words or payed attention to them. But now I will no longer say it until we all get thesame, equal rights. And thank you for making this video :)
My classes are about to read "Nothing But The Truth" by Avi. It's about that. For most of my seventh graders, it'll be the first time they actually listen to what they've been pledging their whole lives (and discuss it with others, too)
It's a new dawn when we actually hear the words of all the things we are forced to say by rote: the Pledge, the Star Spangle Banner, certain prayers ... It must be really great to watch your kids develop in amazing ways!
Brava to you, Gina, for raising such amazing kids. forget about them going into politics (too dirty), they already are Ambassadors. I thank them too. I hope they get involved with COLAGE. And to the trolls, should we just get over it that we are denied rights and protections in employment, housing and military service?
No one in my family has recited the pledge either in over four years. We WILL get there and when we do, I will recite the pledge proudly. I also told my kids that "Mosh" by Eminem was their new national anthem. (That was kind of a joke though... but it's a good song.)
I have seriously thought about not reciting the pledge every morning because there are so many people in the United States who do not believe in "liberty and justice for ALL."
I had the same situation, thinking about the words one day. I'm bisexual, and I know that the other students don't mean what they say in the pledge when they make anti-gay slurs. Even if I get my rights, I won't say it until everybody gets their rights.
This is something that kind of contradicts itself. You are saying that in order to for this to be a just society that everyone must stop saying anti-gay slurs. Now what if you got your wish and that stopped happening? You would probably recite the pledge then but what if the others want to think or say anti-gay slurs but can't for whatever reason. Will you say that their rights of free speech are being violated?
When I say that, I mean that I wouldn't recite it until EVERYBODY got their rights. I think that their freedom of speech is slightly being violated; at the same time, I believe that somebody's freedom of speech should stop where somebody else's freedoms begin.
If there was another group in the US that was having obvious lack of rights, yes.. I would not say it.
Just as Charlize Therone has said, she will not get married, until the gays have the right to. If we all don't protect each other, then who will be there for ourselves when we are in need.
(cont.) That being said---it's a difficult and interesting issue to ponder and philosophize. There's definitely multiple sides to this story. Well, I gave my two cents---hopefully my statements have provoked a whole different way on looking at this.
(cont.) Stallionette, if gay marriage is legalized nationwide would you resume saying the pledge? If you do, you must also realize that other justices haven't been met yet. As stated previously, no country is or will ever be perfect. Do you want your justice---or justice for all?
That's a difficult issue. I'm gay, and thought about not saying the pledge of allegiance a few times before. Justice is an interesting word in itself, though. The phrase, "Justice for all" isn't completely true in every aspect. Sometimes the justice system will inevitably fail people in some sense from time to time, even in countries where people have the most civil rights. No world, or country is perfect. We all must be somewhat proud and overall satisfied with the country we live in.
I actually don't like the word "system". It implies that we are all cogs in an assembly line somewhere doing are part in that aspect of society. In this type of thinking individuals don't have the right not to be a "cog" and do what they want to do or they risk destroying the "system".
Gina, I just read the comments - what a wonderful discussion you got started. Awesome. I hope you've let your kids know what we think of them and how impressed we are by their courage and clear thinking. Best wishes for Dakota's fever too.
I think Dakota is a very smart young man who has strong beliefs..Im sure your very proud of him & Noel..Im impressed but how mature they are on some adult issues..WTG Dakota!
Both my grandparents died because of war! The war we are in now is not about American Liberties for all. Please educate yourself on the millions of Americans that suffer because of not having Civil Rights, even though we pay the same taxes. Maybe one day you will remove your blinders and understand.
I very much understand! But as I've seen others comment, because you and your children refuse to stand for the pledge shows people around you that your showing no respect for your country. They have no idea it's because your gay and you feel you don't have the same civil rights others do..it just looks like your cold and close minded.
The General Accounting Office in 1997 released a list of 1,049 benefits and protections available to heterosexual married couples. These benefits range from federal benefits, such as survivor benefits through Social Security, sick leave to care for ailing partner, tax breaks, veterans benefits and insurance breaks
Ok, let's remove the blinders. Exactly what Civil Rights do you not have? The right to divorce? The right to be sued for alimony? The right to have to pay $100 for a marriage certificate? That's silly - it's like complaining, "I'm so discriminated against, I can't stand in line at the DMV." The rest of us should be so lucky.
If you want to file taxes as Married Filing Jointly, do so. The IRS is not going to notice two female names. Or care. Trust me, they're happy if you file at all.

Hey Jeff. I understand your point. My grandpa also fought in that war earning three purple hearts. My father was in the Air Force during Vietnam when I was a kid. It's sad that you cannot see that America is great, but not perfect.
The problem here is one of perspective. The child three seats over may have just lost their Daddy in Iraq or Afghanistan. Do they even know why you're sitting through the Pledge? Unless you're wearing a pink T-shirt that says, "HEY I'M GAY", probably not. They see your sitting as an act of disrespect towards their father's sacrifice. That may not be your intention, but that is how it may be received.
Often, how you protest can mean as much as what you are protesting.
i agree with this in that one shouldnt be made to recite something he doesnt feel in his own heart. what point does it make to force someone to just recite words if the feelings arent there? i am for gay equality and am a christian. it sounds like you have smart, thoughtful kids and im proud to know there are parents out there who help foster their childrens ideas and opinions to a certain extent that it teaches patience, understanding, respect or at least common decency.
well, hopefully under Obama he will be able to say the pledge. oh wait... we are moving into communism, last time i looked they only encourage same sex rights for countries they are taking down. once they seize power, they will exterminate people that they don't like. so enjoy not saying the pledge WHILE YOU CAN!!!
i never really thought of it like that. your children are highly intellectual. You have defiantly done a fine job raising them. So this is a YAY for you and your kids....YAY to the Super family. You are a super mother and have raised super children. I have this feeling that i will see them in politics kicking but. Congratulations.
The ERA was written in 1923 but has still not been ratified by the necessary 38 states to be included in the Constitution. Apparently, "Liberty and Justice for all" is merely a concept, not a reality.
Amazing video Gina, very powerful topic. When I was in school a long long LONG time ago, we stopped doing the pledge in grade school. It just all of a sudden stopped. I never did stop as a child and think about the meaning of the pledge I just parrotted the words we were taught to say. Obviously you are raising kids that think about things very deeply, obviously due to your excellent parenting and the home life you have provided. You should be(and I know are) very proud of your kids. Lori :)
I look at the pledge as a goal we strive for rather than a statement of fact. I have been very disappointed by the legal system and what I see. So I am well aware we are far from "justice for all."
If I were a teacher I would ask the student why they are not participating and if it was a matter of conscience I would leave it alone.
Oh and by the way I am a super science geek myself. The Discovery Science channel is my favorite.
The Discovery Channel is awesome. They also have their own channel on YouTube. Most of the channels I'm subbed to is all that stuff! Isn't it great.. :)
This video was amazing. I enjoyed watching and hearing all the things you talk about and share in. Have a great Friday and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. God bless you and your family.
Im thinking that you and your kids made the right decision on that. Being patriotic doesnt AND shouldnt require us to be blindly so. You got 2 good kids there.
wow you have great children but I get that it is hard although I don't have experience in that department because I still dont have children although my gf and I will have some in the future but I mean I think about having children and it seems like something really hard to deal with specially when they ask questions I dont know what to reply to I would be lost especially if something like that came up I dont know what Id do or say but I admire you and think your children are great
It is admirable that your children have thought about the meaning of the pledge. What they need to consider is that the flag represents the ideal of liberty and justice for all. Just because we haven't achieved the ideal doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it. I imagine your children may work harder to achieve the ideal than most people. That makes the pledge worth saying.
That is amazing! I never said the pledge just because I wanted to be rebellious. (And of course, there was also the "One nation under God," line) But I never even thought about what liberty and justice for all meant. So kudos to your genius kids for figuring that out for themselves, and I really admire your family for taking a stand (or lack thereof) against the pledge!
Many gay people escape a lot of homophobia bc they are cushioned by not having to deal with the myriad of systems and societies you have to assimilate into when you have children and/or with being married and out. Unfortunately, kids w/gay parents experience the burden of the reality that liberty and justice for all is a lie much younger than their peers. Kind of a loss of innocence. However, the positive is it makes them more rebellious independent thinkers. Lord knows we need more of those! <3
i never say the pledge either i stopped saying it in 6th grade. but i stopped because i didn't see the sense of pledging to a flag. i continue to not say it for the same reason your kids stopped.
Gina, I love that your children have such a balanced and rational outlook on life. If they are an example of the generation to come then the world has an amazing future ahead of it. Bravo to them.
I pledge allegiance to the dollar of the United States of America, and to the rip off for which it stands: one nation under loan, impoverished, with Liberty and Justice for the rich.
Nor should you feel bad. If everyone were as self-governing the world would be an infinitely better place. Bravo for your kids. They're ahead of the game....
Gina, I'm glad to see another geek lesbian raising the next generation of freedom fighters. Cheers to being a fellow Paisana and geek lesbian. Much love to you and your fam.
I agree well I dont preotest the pledge but I definately agree that gays dont have equal rights. I really hope that you get equal rights but it's sad because Gay rights move so slowly. If you know what I mean. Also I used to protest it for a week but then no one listened to what I had to say But I hope you make the Right choice whatever that be. :D
When I was in grade school and we did the pledge it always felt mechanical to me. I never meant it because I never felt apart of this country even though I was born here. Your children are incredibly brave and I wish I had that courage then.
Wow, you gotta be so proud! I'm impressed indeed. To just quietly stand up for themselves and their family in an orderly yet firm fashion. Ghandi has company methinks. Wow. THe hairs stood up on my arms when I heard it. Rock on. I just got to the end where you relate being moved to action; well, non action, by the kids. If you aren't blown away by them with pride, there is something badly wrong. Again, wow!
I would like to know if anyone said anything to you about your family not saying "The Pledge of Allegiance" on that night. Did you notice the facial expressions of the people you knew well? If it were me, I would have asked you.
If there are any gay parents reading this and believe your children should say the pledge, I would like to know what you would tell your kids when you found out.
I stopped saying the pledge two years ago for the same reason. Your kids are so bright. I can't believe they came into that so young It's amazing how bright those two are.
It's from a song by The Dresden Dolls...in a way. It's a bit of a twisted song but It's really good and I changed the words around to better suit myself. The name of the song is Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner... not great to pull a name from but still a great piece of lyricism. Thanks!
and do you have to say this every single day as well? what exactly are you supposed to say? and do you say the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem too? lmao sorry for all the questions :p
From Wiki: The current Pledge of Allegiance reads as follows: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
School kids usually start the day with it. Adults not nearly as often; at political events, school activities and anywhere people want to flaunt their patriotism. The phrase "under god" was added in the 50s.
oo cool thanks :D i kind of thought there might be that and then it breaks into the national anthem cause in canada we just sing O' Canada and thats about it.. but everyone in my school stopped singing it in the second grade lol
Wow. I never thought of it from that angle before. I think you are well within your right not to say it. I don't like even saying it for reasons that there isn't justice for ALL. Its sad that as old as America is we haven't gotten that much further in rights as we should have. Awesome Video Gina.
Not only are your kids brilliant and gorgeous but you take my breath away in this video. You just get better and better Gina! I am so proud and honored to know you and your family. You are really making a difference!!! Love you, hope to speak soon.
Gina, that's is AWESOME that your children are that socially conscious, and that it comes from a place of TRUTH within them. I know you're proud. I'm proud of them too! :)

WOW... you're an amazing mother with an amazing son!

Concertinatokiss 2 years ago
I think that this is really cool because instead of just mindlessly parroting the pledge your kids are actually thinking about what it means to be an American. Of course I know there are many conservative folks that would be horrified at your kids and you not saying the pledge they are completely missing the point of what it means to live in a democracy where you have freedom of speech and concience. Kudos to your kids and you and your spouse!

Even if I get my rights, I won't say it until everybody gets their rights.
sporksrock120 2 years ago
The other thing is that I'm not as brave as your kids, I just end up standing up with everybody and saying it in the end.
sporksrock120 2 years ago
This is something that kind of contradicts itself. You are saying that in order to for this to be a just society that everyone must stop saying anti-gay slurs. Now what if you got your wish and that stopped happening? You would probably recite the pledge then but what if the others want to think or say anti-gay slurs but can't for whatever reason. Will you say that their rights of free speech are being violated?
timbosforporn 2 years ago
When I say that, I mean that I wouldn't recite it until EVERYBODY got their rights. I think that their freedom of speech is slightly being violated; at the same time, I believe that somebody's freedom of speech should stop where somebody else's freedoms begin.
sporksrock120 2 years ago
Wonderful comment Spork!
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
If there was another group in the US that was having obvious lack of rights, yes.. I would not say it.
Just as Charlize Therone has said, she will not get married, until the gays have the right to. If we all don't protect each other, then who will be there for ourselves when we are in need.
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
(cont.) That being said---it's a difficult and interesting issue to ponder and philosophize. There's definitely multiple sides to this story. Well, I gave my two cents---hopefully my statements have provoked a whole different way on looking at this.
CapnCircus 2 years ago
(cont.) Stallionette, if gay marriage is legalized nationwide would you resume saying the pledge? If you do, you must also realize that other justices haven't been met yet. As stated previously, no country is or will ever be perfect. Do you want your justice---or justice for all?
CapnCircus 2 years ago
DO you know any other group in the US that is STILL trying to gain civil rights?
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
That's a difficult issue. I'm gay, and thought about not saying the pledge of allegiance a few times before. Justice is an interesting word in itself, though. The phrase, "Justice for all" isn't completely true in every aspect. Sometimes the justice system will inevitably fail people in some sense from time to time, even in countries where people have the most civil rights. No world, or country is perfect. We all must be somewhat proud and overall satisfied with the country we live in.
CapnCircus 2 years ago
I actually don't like the word "system". It implies that we are all cogs in an assembly line somewhere doing are part in that aspect of society. In this type of thinking individuals don't have the right not to be a "cog" and do what they want to do or they risk destroying the "system".

Both my grandparents died because of war! The war we are in now is not about American Liberties for all. Please educate yourself on the millions of Americans that suffer because of not having Civil Rights, even though we pay the same taxes. Maybe one day you will remove your blinders and understand.
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
I very much understand! But as I've seen others comment, because you and your children refuse to stand for the pledge shows people around you that your showing no respect for your country. They have no idea it's because your gay and you feel you don't have the same civil rights others do..it just looks like your cold and close minded.

The General Accounting Office in 1997 released a list of 1,049 benefits and protections available to heterosexual married couples. These benefits range from federal benefits, such as survivor benefits through Social Security, sick leave to care for ailing partner, tax breaks, veterans benefits and insurance breaks
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
Ok, let's remove the blinders. Exactly what Civil Rights do you not have? The right to divorce? The right to be sued for alimony? The right to have to pay $100 for a marriage certificate? That's silly - it's like complaining, "I'm so discriminated against, I can't stand in line at the DMV." The rest of us should be so lucky.
If you want to file taxes as Married Filing Jointly, do so. The IRS is not going to notice two female names. Or care. Trust me, they're happy if you file at all.

I think the only thing we can agree on is that we disagree.
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
The problem here is one of perspective. The child three seats over may have just lost their Daddy in Iraq or Afghanistan. Do they even know why you're sitting through the Pledge? Unless you're wearing a pink T-shirt that says, "HEY I'M GAY", probably not. They see your sitting as an act of disrespect towards their father's sacrifice. That may not be your intention, but that is how it may be received.
Often, how you protest can mean as much as what you are protesting.
CommentorX 2 years ago
Exactly!!!!
UFGatorJenn 2 years ago
i agree with this in that one shouldnt be made to recite something he doesnt feel in his own heart. what point does it make to force someone to just recite words if the feelings arent there? i am for gay equality and am a christian. it sounds like you have smart, thoughtful kids and im proud to know there are parents out there who help foster their childrens ideas and opinions to a certain extent that it teaches patience, understanding, respect or at least common decency.

Lori :)
AmethystButterflyGrl 2 years ago
I look at the pledge as a goal we strive for rather than a statement of fact. I have been very disappointed by the legal system and what I see. So I am well aware we are far from "justice for all."
If I were a teacher I would ask the student why they are not participating and if it was a matter of conscience I would leave it alone.
Oh and by the way I am a super science geek myself. The Discovery Science channel is my favorite.

Pippilly 2 years ago

Renfiles90 2 years ago
Many gay people escape a lot of homophobia bc they are cushioned by not having to deal with the myriad of systems and societies you have to assimilate into when you have children and/or with being married and out. Unfortunately, kids w/gay parents experience the burden of the reality that liberty and justice for all is a lie much younger than their peers. Kind of a loss of innocence. However, the positive is it makes them more rebellious independent thinkers. Lord knows we need more of those! <3

Hey lannazazaz, The pledge is something we say to, in a way, thank America for giving us all protection.
ItalianStallionette 2 years ago
and do you have to say this every single day as well? what exactly are you supposed to say? and do you say the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem too? lmao sorry for all the questions :p
lannazazaz 2 years ago
From Wiki: The current Pledge of Allegiance reads as follows: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
School kids usually start the day with it. Adults not nearly as often; at political events, school activities and anywhere people want to flaunt their patriotism. The phrase "under god" was added in the 50s.
thizizliz 2 years ago
oo cool thanks :D i kind of thought there might be that and then it breaks into the national anthem cause in canada we just sing O' Canada and thats about it.. but everyone in my school stopped singing it in the second grade lol

Wow. I never thought of it from that angle before. I think you are well within your right not to say it. I don't like even saying it for reasons that there isn't justice for ALL. Its sad that as old as America is we haven't gotten that much further in rights as we should have. Awesome Video Gina.
