  • Where and when was this performance? Thanks

  • @BW92116 This was for the Bridge School benefit at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA, on October 19th & 20th, 1996. Searching for Bowie and Bridge School will often get you more videos of this. It's one of my absolute FAVOURITE performances of his. His voice was so pure and there is very little backup to distract from *Bowie*. Plus he and his band members looked to be having SUCH fun. Everything he sang there was exquisite. Well worth searching out.

  • dsconce1, Bowie has two different coloured eyes, nothing wrong. :)

  • I think the bald chick wrote it!!

  • I really prefer the original version to the Nirvana cover. Very subtle, beautifully orchestrated, weird, dark and uplifting at the same time. Only Bowie could write this.

Cobain actually did not bring anything to the song, though I respect his cover.

  • its not easy to recover a cover of the own song. because a cover means mostly a new interpretation too.

  • what's up with Bowie's right eye it looks lighter than his left one

  • @dsconce1 Because he has a blown pupil in his left eye due to a fight with a friend as a child. It won't contract like the other so he "appears" to have two different colored eyes.

  • Even nowadays some kids think that this is a Nirvana-Cover; that doesn't make me sick and sad at all; sick and sad makes me the thought that maybe in 30, 40 years even this will only be a memory; a piece of history itself. A great piece of history though - but just damned history! - Living in the year 2011 and being witness of over 15 Bowie-Concerts I wonder if there's gonna be a chance of being part of the Bowie-History once more....

  • My God, he is beautiful. goosebumps.....

  • Bowies Song.....end of

  • One of the Gods of the Olympus

  • i never noticed the elf ears before

  • @ammayoga I think you'll find they are actually "Goblin" ears...

  • 三味線見たいやね。。。と最初おもいました。。。ごめんなさいね。

    でも、すてきよぉ

  • This is the most lovely version of this song <3

  • I'm amazed how few people saw the ";)" in SickCityDaggersfan's comment and realised it was sarcasm...

  • This is a fantastic live version

  • Wonderful ! What a voice !!!

  • love reeves guitar

  • Masterful

  • This is so very honest and heartfelt. It leaves me quite sad.

  • I think its really hip of Bowie to cover Nirvana. ;)

  • @SickCityDaggersfan you can check the album "The Man Who Sold The World" by Bowie from 1970. I think it's cool that Nirvana covered Bowie :)

  • @redsails2008 I'm pretty sure that Bowie took a time machine back to 1970 after hearing Nirvana perform this song and recorded it as his own... *BOOM* instant paradox - which came first Bowie's 'cover' or Nirvana's 'original' eh? Hehe Obv a load of bull but sends your head crazy if you actually think about it hehehe :D

  • @redsails2008 Nice! Bowie is the Alpha here.

  • @redsails2008 Thank you! Yes, Bowie is the Alpha here.

  • @redsails2008 Pretty sure he was being sarcastic...that aside I like Nirvana but I hate their version of this. Bowie did it first and Bowie did it best

  • @redsails2008 you can check the dictionary under "pulling your leg." ;-)

  • @SickCityDaggersfan actually nirvana covered bowie. he wrote this in 1970.

  • @SickCityDaggersfan - Dear friend that's NOT a Nirvana Song. Its Bowie's own song from the album "The man Who Sold The World". :-)

  • @SickCityDaggersfan Nirvana covered Bowie...

  • @SickCityDaggersfan Seriously?

  • @SickCityDaggersfan

I want to drool on you..

  • @SickCityDaggersfan Were you joking when you wrote this, or being seriously illiterate ?

  • @SickCityDaggersfan Hey mate, you do know that David Bowie actually wrote and performed this song LOONNNNNGGGGGGG before the completely awesome Nirvana Unplugged perfomance, right?

    Cheers to good music~

  • @SickCityDaggersfan its Nirvana that covers Bowie. how old ate you???

  • @SickCityDaggersfan

I think your joke was very visible thanks to the "wink" icon added at the end it. I also think it is a funny joke, because it is a reference to Cobain's talent, who totally made this song his. The fact that rock "experts" jump on the opportunity to give lessons in obvious rock history is incredibly depressing and sad. Humorless fucks, old farts, various creeps, David Bowie quit music because of you. Choke with shame and burn.

  • @mantra3000

    Yeah ok...

Cobain had no talent...I respect his grunge stuff and granted, he did awake all of those morons who thought it ok to disrespect all others..what a hero..not!

Bowie was behind my time and Nirvana was in my time...Bowie has the brains, Kurt has none, just an amateur trying to live from others when he knew he was Courtney Love's Bitch!

  • @SickCityDaggersfan Dont scream your age buddy! Kurt paid HOMAGE to Bowie

  • He had no choice, they play all acoustic at the Bridge School Benefit shows. I've seen many amazing acoustic versions of songs there by people like The Who,Tom Petty, etc.

  • So acustic, so expresive, so fantastic ... anthem of all bussinessmans.

  • Does this song have a religious overtone?

  • tres tres belle version j'adore aaaaaadu grand bo bowie

  • fantastic!!!

  • hypnotic

  • Hey, that's my new guitar that Reeve's is playing. It's much more decked out now.

  • The quality is not that good but i like this song very much. This is an epic song and one of my favourites.

  • This is just GREAT! Thanx for aploading the video!

  • Thank's for posting this is absolutley Fantastic.....Realy made my night ,,,,Thank You

  • Lost in my mind thank you for putting up THANKS !!! :^)

  • Bowie composes with the depth & capacity for multiple melodies. His music has meaning, boldly confronting current issues. When touring, he has his band yet the test of a truly talented artist & performer is demonstrated in his ability to adapt to the nature of the event & deliver his music with confidence & passion. That he can evolve & take a song written 30+ years ago & express it with such diversity is truly amazing! Starting out w/ Iggy as back-up & on keyboards, he transcends time!

  • Bowie didn't build his musical world with this kind of acoustic sessions in mind, hence this is VERY rare, he likes a band behind him , he is a showman on a big stage with large sounds to back up his strange insecurities , that make him ....the best....

  • @tarkstar99...strange insecurities, you're making that up. Bowie always had the urge to try new things, it's not that he needs a band behind him at all time.

  • Wonderful version.

I like the way Bowie sometimes 'reinvents' songs - Let Dance and Rebel have been reworked to good effect. Check out the Scary Monsters Johnny Cash version - I kid you not.

MWSTW is a great song and works well when stripped down like this.

I read a comment somewhere where somebody said that they prefered the Nivana 'original' - strange but true........

  • @djs1959 Check out the Scary Monsters Johnny Cash version - spare a link, plea-a-ase!

  • @djs1959 It is not a Nirvana original. Bowie created the song in 1970, when Kurt Cobain was 3 years old. In 1974 Lulu covered it and then in 1993 Nirvana covered it for all kids who never heard of Bowie because they where not yet born.He was making music in the 70s that would influence generations of musicians for decades to come.

  • "Thank you" ...?! ... Ohh, THANK YOUUU !!!

  • Oh, man. That is awesome. Does anyone know if this performance ever pressed onto CD?

  • one of the best live acoustics of this

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC ! ! !

  • AWESOME! GREAT DAVID!

  • I love this song! Thanks :)

  • Great! Thanks for sharing! :-)
