@muzzana1 I live in Hawaii and have never heard that it's not a state. That's ridiculous. i pledged allegiance all through elementary school. We sing the Star Spangled Banner at American football games?
@t1paka It obviously gives you a strong impression, but like most things in life, our impressions say more about us, than they do what we are observing.

Vanessa Mae springs to mind.
There's a lot of outstanding Asian classical musician's & cover artists but not as many creative ones. Also Chinese people are often less extrovert since they have a culture that promotes politeness and not speaking out.
I'm note saying that if you are asian you can't be a creative extrovert musician or that if you are white american you can't play classical music well.
I'm sure I will get accused of being racist here but it's just what I have observed.
Haha, yes I think I was 'thumbed down' for racism, which is odd, since I was just asking for peoples' opinions...
Yes, Vanessa Mae is one. But even then, Mae and Shimabukuro are both classical musicians of a sort. What about more mainstream artists?
In spite of the cultural differences... it's amazing to me considering how many Asians there are, in UK / USA and the rest of the world, that they are so underrepresented in music.
I'm teaching myself how to play the uke atm...I've played the piano since i was 4, so it's a bit of a departure lol!!! Watching these videos of Jake has inspired me to get practising :-)
First of all, he was born in Hawaii which makes him AMERICAN
And does this sound like the type of stuff that would hit mainstream?
It's not anything like mainstream today.
Why look at race at all?
I guarantee you his not being on mainstream has nothing to do with his race.
And we aren't used to other languages so most people wouldn't listen to music with foreign lyrics and other cultures generally wouldn't sound good to western audiences anyway.
This video was shot with a very high quality potato
