LOVE THIS EPISODE! Laura kind if looks like Dorthy Gale from the Wizard Of Oz at the part where she shows Charles the note! Especially at the part where she seed Solomon for the first time!
I love the irony of this show "Maybe in a hundred years or so, things will be different." Oh yes Solomon it will! We've come a long way and we're getting better. I'm glad Miss Beadle and the other kids were nice to him. :)
Todd played the same type of character in a episode of the Walton's.He was an orphan who wanted to live with the Walton family.Basically John Walton gave the same reasons in 1940 that Charles Ingalls gave in the 1880's why they could not take him into their family.
@MissLadyDoolittle Well, I understand that. Are you sure you understood what I was trying to say? I only meant that Mary is older than Soloman. Obviously, Charles was married to Caroline when they conceived Mary. In order for his story to be true, Charles would have had to marry Caroline, conceive Mary (and possibly Laura), divorce her, marry a black woman, conceive Soloman, then divorce her, remarry Caroline, and conceive Carrie. If only Mrs. Oleson used some common sense, she'd know better.
Ummm...that was sort of my point. Mrs. Oleson's love of gossip and scandal overcame her common sense. She believed it because she *wanted* to, without thinking about the facts.
As for who would have "obviously" had to be married to whom, I think maybe *you* need to think about what you're saying. Marriage is not necessary to conceive a child, and I am sure that is part of what was on Mrs. Oleson's mind when she looked so shocked.
@MissLadyDoolittle I am well aware that two people do not have to be married in order to conceive a child, thank you very much. No, you must not have completely understood my comment, because you wouldn't have replied in that way if you had. Charles actually tells Mrs. Oleson that Solomon was his "son by a former marriage." I didn't just pull that idea out of thin air. And you're welcome for the logic instruction, though it doesn't seem to have helped much. Sorry for the confusion.

I can't imagine anyone feeling that way about themselves or about anyone feeling that way about another person based on the color of their skin or other physical attributes. Quite honestly, race doesn't even factor into my assessment of a person and never has. I have been made to feel so naive in this respect, but it just never...entered into my consideration, despite the fact that my own father was a shameless racist. It never made any sense to me and still doesn't. I mean...no sense at all.
I love this episode. It's very touching. But I want to point out to steelflame1 dat bcuz some1 is black it doesn't make him/her a criminal. Criminals come frm other races too. As for me, I am black, I'm a law abiding citizen of my country and am proud of who I am. I think every1 shud b. :)
@Dgkobey Those same leprecons who pass up and down the road all night disturbing the peace and getting away with it amongst other things instead of being at home being responsible for themselves and holding down the fort. That leprecon culture is why so many get in trouble while the rest have to deal with it and pick up the tab for the medica, legal, and social issues it causes. It's as if leprecons can't handle freedom.
Now they want to hang in the bathrooms, hall ways, or even if they do go to class they f with the teachers. They jump people for shoes and steal lunch money from smaller kids. The fact is the more freedoms they have gained the worse their behavior got.
@T4Tyson That line, "Maybe things will change in 100 years" is enough closure I think. This aired 100 years after the year portrayed in this episode (I think it was 1877 here), and it's great to see how far civil rights has advanced within those 100 years. I agree that the ending is depressing for the most part :(
I wish that they had solomon come back in a later episode. It would have been good if they had shown that he had become a doctor or something. There was a black doctor episode later on when Doc Baker wouldn't recommend him to the town.
@MiseryMachine2011 :D YEAH! I would've loved to see that. I felt really bad that he had to leave and head home like that but it was his family and all. That would've been crazy if that was Solomon but I really doubt it. Oh well. :) Solomon was one of my favorite one time characters. I just wanna give him a big old hug! haha

Todd Bridges was such a talented little actor, his performance in this episode was heartbreaking. Shame he and so many child stars succumbed to drug abuse.

22:45 LOL. This show is about the politics of the 1970s not what life was like on the prairie in the nineteenth century. In reality there would not have been a chimpanzee in the classroom.
incredibly racist, the chimpanzee remark. *sigh* but i do agree that often LHOtP reflects the values of viewers more than the time period it portrays.
To this day this may be the most controversial LHOTP episode, the only one that would give it a run for its money is Home Again its a 2 part episode about Albert's morphine addiciton and shows him withdrawing hardcore

@Jennafu832 The idea was scandalous to her, and she loves scandal more than anything. So she believed it.
