@6969coprophagist6969 according to the wikipedia article he shaved it. Do you have any videos where he specifically says he went bald? (Just curious, not mad :P)
If I were him, I'd play music from all over the spectrum, Iron Maiden style. Iron Maiden has separate tours for greatest hits and new stuff. I think Devin could play double sets like in the old days, and play some early stuff, and some new stuff. I'm just hoping he one day starts playing some old SYL stuff, because I don't see any reason why he shouldn't, it's still great material. But that's just talking from someone who was unfortunate not to have seen him when he had the skullet.
@6ft2britishmale I've seen tons of recent interviews with him, but I'm saying that he should still be allowed to play the old music too, despite not wanting to write music like that anymore. Metallica plays crappy music now, but they still play the old stuff when they play live, because even though at one point they didn't want to write that kind of music any more, they had no problem with playing it. I don't see why Devin would have a problem playing one or two of SYL's stuff, but he won't.
@LPJeetkunedo Never considered that, but it's unlikely. The reality is, Century Media allowed him to keep the rights on his first album and they just distributed it. I suspect that he has kept rights on all of his material to date, having produced all of it himself, and usually under "HevyDevy records". He's had complete creative control his whole life. SYL's material, CM even said "You can go crazy, make whatever album you want". With the creative freedom he was given, the rights should be his.
@LPJeetkunedo Ya, but suppose you take a long break from those songs. Would those songs necessarily be sickening after not having to play them for a while? I tend to think of all musical creation as the intention of the musician, and all money-based creation to not qualify as true music. SYL was made by a musician for the purpose of making real music that he felt the need to make. I don't see any reason why I would get sick of the music I've written, because I'm glad to have written it!
@Bassbait No, he isn't in the SYL mindset. For performing or writing. Have you ever seen SYL live? Devin is swearing and insulting everyone all the time, and while thats awesome you can tell he's changed and isn't that person anymore.
@Bassbait I think mainly because he doesn't want to stand behind the message and energy of music like alien when its not representative of who he is anymore. One of the reason's his music is so powerful is because its so authentic, and playing something live night after night that no longer is can really mess people up
I couldn't imagine him doing these live and yet here he is doing them even better than on the album! He really is one of the most important musicians of our time and such a great stage presence.
@JusteDni Haha I would do the same, I just couldn't tell from the audio. Thanks for filming this. I've been meaning to get out and see Dev live for a while now
@JusteDni go check out Sick Drummer's youtube channel they just posted a high quality video of Ryan playing it live at one of Devin's gigs.. and he did really well, he's a great drummer
@xStupaflyx I think he has a drum video up of that, do a search. From what I've seen the harder double bass rhythms, he'll throw a floor tom into the mix, I've seen a lot of drummers do this. This way he's getting the extra kicks, just not all from his feet.
Also of note, when they play supercrush, pay attention to what he does to the snare during the intro/chorus parts, it's pretty interesting
@xStupaflyx When I saw them in Chicago, he did quite well. The blasting parts sounded incredibly powerful with him playing too. I think there's a SickDrummer video of him playing it if you'd like to look/hear more closely.
@xStupaflyx take a look at the drum video of Ryan playing Juular, it's different to the original recording from Dirk. It's easier, but takes concentration. There's also a comment there explaining how Dirk plays the pattern, and it's more or less impossible for the average drummer.
@steppo2000 Yea, he plays the tuplets with snare and bass drum like SBBSBB with the hi-hat on every first snare hit and he plays other various rhythms accompanying the same rhythmical concept.
@MarinVillalpando15 yeah, thats what i was getting at, hard to hear a great difference between SBBSBB triplets and if he would have gone constant BBB BBB all the way.
@steppo2000 Very true yea, first time I listened to Juular, I thought it was straight BBBBBB until I saw the drumcam vid on one of their recorded live shows.
@xStupaflyx Having seen them 3 times, the difference is RVP does downblasts (synchronous) instead of Dirk's traditional blasts (db/snare) and instead of a grouping of 5 strokes on the double kick for the main part of the song, he does a sort of triplet roll. In the context of the song, he plays it fine.

@Bassbait Watch recent interviews with him, he isn't in the syl mindset anymore, and to do it now would be forcing it, doing the music a disservice.

@Bassbait It could very well be that he doesn't have the rights to use them. Perhaps a label screwed him or something.
