I can listen to Rachel's renditions of ELP's music over and over for hours. I agree about Firth of Fifth... Absolutely beautiful renditions. Her version of Keith Emerson's Piano Concerto #1 is particularly beautiful (not to mention indicative of outstanding skill).
Okay well I see Rachel has accomplished all of the music of Emerson/ELP in such a short period of time it's almost unbelieveable. Now it's time for Rachel to move on down the "hall" of prog rock and maybe attempt something by Rick Wakeman of Yes or maybe Tony Banks of Genesis. I'd love to see/hear Rachel do the beautiful piano intro to Genesis's "Firth Of Fifth" from Selling England by the Pound. 12stringbabe, Make Rachel learn Firth Of Fifth by Genesis!! Just kidding of course. ;o)
@commentnotapproved1 Rachel works these pieces out by ear on her own. She is musically literate - that is, she reads braille music, and that is how she learns her classical flute pieces - but she also has perfect pitch and learns all the ELP, The Nice, and other keyboard pieces by herself.
@12stringbabe I'm always searching for ELP material and these videos had never come up before.....Fantastic!. I also removed my first comment...I thought it may have been a bit crass.
@12stringbabe I'm always searching for ELP material and these videos had never come up before.....Fantastic!. I also removed my first comment...I thought it may have been a bit crass.
Superb rendition! Nicely done Rachel! The music of ELP blew me away in the early 70's and I never tire of listening to it. Good to see someone who truly appreciates it.
Wow! great job! I too know this piece although I certainly can't play bass pedals with it. I love your GONG emulation too during the rest at 1:00. I also have worked on KE9 2nd Impression. I am curious are you learning these pieces by ear? or do you have some sort of transcriptions? Please keep it up!
vegasshow...JUST covering the music? Does the NY Philharmonic JUST cover Beethoven? Rachel plays with more depth, power and phrasing than anyone I've ever heard, save Emerson. She PLAYS this stuff. Anyone who is an actual musician will know what I mean. Rachel is beyond talented, she's got that "X" factor that sets genius apart from the rest. My GOD she is good, and she's what...16? I've been playing 47 years (since I was 8) and I'd be HONORED to play with her. You, sir, are a schmoe!
@mattleemattlee123 Is this little girl blind? She is intensely focused ? WOW ... It is an amazing talent to HEAR and/or SEE a piece of music and then to be able to perform that piece of music ... it's one thing to just play it, it's an entirely DIFFERENT animal to perform it with YOUR OWN passion, touch and feeling ...
@mattleemattlee123 I 2nd that emotion. She has an ability that few possess. He doesnt realize that Beethoven learned from Mozart or that both had learned from Bach.Lennon learned from Chuck Berry and so on.....She's amazing.
Now that you are Moog-powered, and Muramatsu-powered....goodness, thinking about all the different Tarkus possibilities, plus the piano concerto, all the JJ and EWF possibilities...it's making my head spin! Play...everything on every instrument asap :))
Keep in mind , she is simply covering the music , she didn't write it , granted it is hard to play , but there are people out there that can do Van Halen or Jimmy Page note for note also , I'll take notice when she can write this stuff
@vegasshowgirlshoes So she's simply covering the music of another and you'll take notice when she can write like it. Great, so, I take it then that, words like interpretation, performance, realisation of the work, are all worthless unless you can write like it. Fine. Then we'll just email all the great Symphony Orchestras, Concert Pianists and other soloists that they must write original works in order to be taken seriously. Then, when we've done that, we'll do the same with all Jazz players!
@vegasshowgirlshoes In keeping with your comment - we'll all take notice of you when YOU can write this stuff. Haven't seen any videos of your music around here...
Rachel, I'm not only a huge fan but I build and repair guitars. I don't know how else to get ahold of you except through here.
I heard about your flute. I have quite a few connections in the musical instrument trade. I might be able to help get you a new one. Feel free to email me at johnleejohnlee123@hotmail.com. A talent like yours must not suffer because of the evil of some thief!
Ive been an ELP fan since 1977 and this woman pulls this of better than Keith ever did live. Truly Amazing! I just read an article today 3-25-2011 that her home was broken into and many instruments stolen. I am definitely going to contact and donate to help replace the gear.
absolutely breathtaking, Rachel. I wonder how Tarkus would sound if you would play it on the piano. Thank you for sharing Keith Emerson's music with us. I am sure that you will perform many more of his tunes. You should sweet-talk Keith to give you one of his Hammond organs, that is the least he could do.
Even today E.L.P.'s first,Tarkus,Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery are my favorite albums to listen to and to hear you play these pieces are an absolute joy. It's nice to see young people listening to much much less playing these masterpieces.Hopefully Kieth will see your performances and pull some strings to get you in a studio recording your own music. Your parents must be very proud of you, well good luck in the future and WOW!!!
Tarkus is remarkably difficult to play and I've heard so many mangled renditions of it that I was dreading hearing yet another painful-to-listen-to disaster, and what do I find? Wow! Bravo! You have a good ear. Go for it!
I wouldn't be surprised if she had perfect pitch. I've been listening to ELP since around '71 and have what I consider to be a pretty good ear. She is absolutely nailing so many of the subtle things that Keith does. She even nails the tempo change there at 1:56.
I was an ELP fan when I was young. It's like being young again. Good to see the young people take over. Keith must be proud to hear the young fingers makin his music live again.
Wow...don't really know what else to say. I know some of this piece musically but rarely have I seen someone come so close to the original on the organ. Well done.
I came across these videos by accident, Rachel is superb. I was a great Keith Emerson fan, particulalrly in the Nice period. I have loved hearing her performances and look forward to hearing some more of her work.
What is amazing to me is she is playing the bass guitar parts with her feet. Awesome. I've been playing Keith's music in tribute bands since the 70's and I know how difficult it is to get his playing sensibility. Go girl!!!! I loved listening to you play Keith's stuff
A musical savant genius, I think she can easily compose for orchestra or something similar. The notes played are perfect and sensibility is even higher. A little Beethoven, hope best of luck to her for a classical/jazz career.
Wow, tell Rachel she is AMAZING! Shame on me, but I'd never heard this music before, and accidentally stumbled on this while glancing through related videos from somewhere else, thinking I'd skip off of it, I sat and listened to the whole thing! Couldn't help but listen. That's some SERIOUS control and passion there and it sounds GREAT, and then to read that she's also blind!! Talk about talent and devotion. What a gift. Thanks for sharing.
Rachel!!!Absolutely awesome!I've been playing for 40yrs. and can't touch you on keyboards.I love your style and your genius! You are a truely remarkable prodigy. One of the finest keyboardist that I have ever heard. Rachel, you make your Yamaha electone organ sound better than my hammond H-327,and the synth parts sound closer to the record than any of my moogs!!!
Thanks so much for sharing you're great gift with all of us Rachel! : )
Rachel, are you playing all this by ear or do you have access to some sort of Braille musical notation -please forgive my ignorance, I'm not sure if that exists-? Either way, your tallent is remarkable; being an Emerson fan for nearly 40 years now, I find truly remarkable that a girl as young as you are can find its way through such complex, beautiful and timeless masterworks. God bless you and keep the good work
I am mesmerized by Rachel. What a gift God has given her parents and all that knows her and views these videos. Being an ELP fan since I was young ( a long time ago) I appreciate when someone with as much talent as Rachel can play Keith's music as well as he can. Please keep posting so we can enjoy it.
Rachel's rendition of Emerson's solo is pure genius. Please please please tell her that she not only capable of playing ELP's complex music but that she has *also* the talent (and the guts) to put HER touch in that very solo, wich is something I really appreciate.
Wow, I am working my way through all your videos, you are amazing, I am telling all my freinds to watch your performances on youtube. Thanks for the enjoyment again. roybozwell
I am simply amazed by that girl and her playing... And I wish I meet her someday. One of my passions is coaching along music. So, Rachel Flowers is a case to learn from.
Are you kidding me? This is like watching a miracle in action. Rachel, just the fact that you are investing so much in Keith's great music (all of your many youtube versions are stunning) is unbelievable and totally inspiring. And combined with the fact that you're amazingly talented, well...it's a huge gift to us. Thank you.
I'm stunned. This is incredible playing. Ive watched a few of these videos now and will definately be subscribing.
I was wondering; does Rachel play any Rick Wakeman compositions? Something like Merlin the Magician should be an easy task, I would guess, for Rachel.
It takes some guts to attempt a piece as dense and complex (and at the same time beautiful) as Tarkus. I can only say how utterly impressed I am how well she plays this. It's absolutely outstanding.
I went looking for ELP(Emerson,lake,Palmer)-Tarkus', -because someone passed me in traffic today with a bumper sticker showing the Armadillo Tank.....Found wonderful Rachel with perfect note precision that even Keith Emerson would and should' hear. This is magic on all fronts Rachel. The complexity of Tarkus through Emerson's eyes is wonderful and magical. Hats off to you ! (simple rocka from the 70's), John
@12stringbabe I have a blind friend who played Tarkus on a Steinway Grand Piano on Dec 18th 1973 at Madison Sq Garden NYC prior to ELP's 2nd show. As he was sitting there Keith Emerson sat beside him and started to play along with him. I will never forget that
@mtncanyon I"m very happy to learn Keith knows about her. I dearly hope she gets to go to ELP's concert on Sunday. Does anyone know if she's going? Is she British?
Staggering. This young girl shows how far a truly "gifted" musician is from even the best of the rest of us, never mind us average musicians who just try very, very hard !
Good God! is there anything this girl CAN'T play. She is absolutely amazing taking on a magnum opus like Tarkus. I can't even think of words to describe this, but GOOO RACHEL!!!!
Well, I've seen it a bunch of times now and still can't believe it.
Best thing on YouTube in many, many time. The footwork is impressive. Watch out you Lake too! And who knows what she'd be able to do with a drum stick in her mouth... :P Total respect for this Amazing musician.
Rachel's playing is incredible. I have been playing keyboards since 1968, professionally and otherwise, and have met Keith a couple times..and I have never played as well as Rachel.
She is also playing the bass pedals!
I cannot tell you how moved I am as I listen to her astounding performances.
@garthhudson Hi! Thanks for the comment. Rachel is playing a Yamaha Electone organ. I'm guessing it was not designed with Keith Emerson's music in mind, but somehow Rachel makes it work for her :) There are Braille letters on certain stops which help Rachel to find the sounds she wants quickly.
@12stringbabe I thought ... but couldn't believe... is Rachel blind? This is just too amazing. She has captured Keith's spirit as well as his music! Has he heard her play?
@12stringbabe I have a blind friend who played Tarkus on a Steinway Grand Piano on Dec 18th 1973 at Madison Sq Garden NYC prior to ELP's 2nd show. As he was sitting there Keith Emerson sat beside him and started to play along with him. I will never forget that
oh my god...this is the most amazing....I sincerely hope Keith Emerson sends his accolades to you. I am spellbound. I am heartened to know other musicians [virtuosos in this case] are alive and well and focused on keeping the torch lit for what I consider the greatest form in our century. I wish you all the best and keep shining....you are truly awesome......and THANK YOU for this.....
"Precocious" would be an understatement. Naturally much of your improvising comes directly from Keith. Even so, to my ear, your resoursefulness is far beyond anything I could have dreamed of at your age. I sincerely hope it evolves into some serious compositions before long. It's very easy to get caught up in the music you love, but with your talent I'm anxious for you to take the next step.
Rachel...again, I am awestruck. No words can describe your finely tuned ear and talent here. Just shocking and breath taking! Beautifully done. How I wish we could perform the ELP tunes together.
Bravo to you, the music, and your love for KE. I am completely inspired with all the ELP music you have mastered w/o any vision. Wish you many, many fortunes, and BTW, has Keith contacted you yet? Keep up the love and hope to see you perform sometime.

Just bloody fantastic. As good as Keith and I bet he'd be amazed at the accuracy of Rachel's playing.

I want to like this 1000 times, but I can't sorry. 47 likes isn't enough for this video though.

It is incredible what passion for music, and a Yamaha electone can do together.. in my opinion the best ELP tune.

This is mindblowing !! She really deserves a B-3.
@garthhudson. This organ is a Yamaha Electone E-5AR (1973).

I put a link to this on Keith Emersons facebook page. He said he knows about her. Has she met him? I hope so!!

@mtncanyon I"m very happy to learn Keith knows about her. I dearly hope she gets to go to ELP's concert on Sunday. Does anyone know if she's going? Is she British?

This is absolutely amazing!! Your daughter is incredible, I have tears in my eyes listening to her play!!

Staggering. This young girl shows how far a truly "gifted" musician is from even the best of the rest of us, never mind us average musicians who just try very, very hard !
Marvellous. Thanks for posting this. Cheers,Jim.

Best thing on YouTube in many, many time. The footwork is impressive. Watch out you Lake too! And who knows what she'd be able to do with a drum stick in her mouth... :P Total respect for this Amazing musician.

I am awestruck.
Rachel's playing is incredible. I have been playing keyboards since 1968, professionally and otherwise, and have met Keith a couple times..and I have never played as well as Rachel.
She is also playing the bass pedals!
I cannot tell you how moved I am as I listen to her astounding performances.

What kind of organ is this?
garthhudson 1 year ago
@garthhudson Hi! Thanks for the comment. Rachel is playing a Yamaha Electone organ. I'm guessing it was not designed with Keith Emerson's music in mind, but somehow Rachel makes it work for her :) There are Braille letters on certain stops which help Rachel to find the sounds she wants quickly.

@12stringbabe Very good performance.. I am delighted, indeed that's a Yamaha Electone Organ.

@12stringbabe I thought ... but couldn't believe... is Rachel blind? This is just too amazing. She has captured Keith's spirit as well as his music! Has he heard her play?

This appears to be an E70 model. Pete Townshend of The Who also used it when composing songs such as "You Better You Bet" and "Eminence Front."

oh my god...this is the most amazing....I sincerely hope Keith Emerson sends his accolades to you. I am spellbound. I am heartened to know other musicians [virtuosos in this case] are alive and well and focused on keeping the torch lit for what I consider the greatest form in our century. I wish you all the best and keep shining....you are truly awesome......and THANK YOU for this.....

Spellbinding....magnificent. A marvel to watch and listen to. Rachel dear, you are beautiful. Bravo!!

Bravo to you, the music, and your love for KE. I am completely inspired with all the ELP music you have mastered w/o any vision. Wish you many, many fortunes, and BTW, has Keith contacted you yet? Keep up the love and hope to see you perform sometime.
