The movie is a beautiful piece, the opening credits and first scene basically set the mood, I'm happy it was shot in B&W. So many things to say I don't where to start from!
I love Frith's music but this idea that music or art can politically transform is very naive - moreover it's oddly out of step with post-modern times, dating back to modernism or the Beaux Arts or beyond...that art can elevator or condition behavior.
Theoretically anything is capable of altering behavior in some way. But beginning with that intention sets you down a path with about the lowest percentage yield imaginable. How are those Beaux Arts post offices and libraries doing for crime in American downtowns? They are convenient meeting places for drug transactions, prostitution, and the occasional beating.
