You can't buy your way out of a crisis that you bought your way into.
Buying with cash is different from buying with credit. Over extending on credit is what got people in trouble. Alos people got swindled with all those exotic mortagages that were being peddled. Why would banks sell adjustable rate & pick a payment loans when fixed rate mortgages were at record low for the past 6 years? Google Heritage foundation:People who get food stamps — 30 million and growing — will get more. People drawing unemployment checks — 4.8 million and growing — would get an extra $25, and keep those checks coming longer. People who get Supplemental Security Income — 7 million poor Americans who are elderly, blind or disabled — would get one-time extra payments of $250.
And all that money will be spent and circulate, helping the economy. Great.
But even better is that those who get it NEED IT DESPERATELY!!! It is not a joke. It is not a joke to need food stamps and unemployment. Obama is giving them a chance to endure the crisis. Like his medical insurance for kids. It is necesary money and people will be grateful to get it. Which the Republicans don't want because those millions who get it will vote for Obama.
Nice, the klan stopped using sheets. Put on suits and got elected in south, trying to hold on so tight . They still trying to scare the poor , with the darker poor.
30 years of Reagan style economics- no matter who was in the WH is why we're ready to resume the barter system. Sure Reagan's tax cuts worked for him, they always work for the rich and big business, they don't do shit for the working man but put him out of work. This fiscal responsibiity is a joke - 40,41,& 43 trashed the economy with tax cuts for the rich and simultaneous wars (Cold and illegal variety in RR's case.)
Im "acting likethe dems did not cause this crisis" because they, the democratic party, (are you ready for this?)
DID NOT CAUSE THE FREAKING CRISIS!!!
Good Gods, are you people that daft? Wow, how many times must it be drilled into your head before it actually sinks in? No, the wars, plural, by themselves, did not do in the economy - it was the extreme mismanagement and total bullshit of the republican govenment not keeping tabs on the economy that put it under.
How much reality needs to slap your face before this malarky about 'welfare' being responsible for these problems keeps popping up, and this non-stop dead-horse 'tax-cut' crap!!
Come on folks, I'd rather have a job than a check that disappears in about two months.
The Carter AND Clinton administrations created the Sub-prime mortgage market - which led to people not being able to pay mortgages - which lead to banks failing because they didn't get their money back - which led to less credit for businesses - which led lay offs - which led to less spending - which led to more lay offs - which led to where we are today.
the liberal concept of providing for everyone is why we are here.
both political sides are filled with pride in an effort to proove the other side wrong. the leaders of these parties are both paid off to promote proppaganda on both sides. i would be surprised if obama is real and doing things in our interest, but as of now it is only slightly possible.
The thing is, we do need to take it slow, even though we are in a crisis, this stimulus package is duct tape trying to cover a broken water pipe thats gushing water. We need to joe the plumber to do the job,
rofl, did she just reference Moody's to try to prove her point? I'm sorry, but both Dems and Republicans are more. Spending from the government is bad because they can only spend what they take from you. You can't cut taxes without cutting spending. If the government could actually stimulate the economy with food stamps and infrastructure, we wouldn't ever have had poverty to begin with.
Maybe you should actually say something intelligent rather then calling people failures of a human being. The only failure I see is someone who can't even have a serious debate without insult.
Given the ratings on your comments, you'll notice that nobody is agreeing with you. I guess you just like getting your ass handed to you repeatedly. As fun as it has been verbally destroying you, kingston, I think you've had enough, or rather, I've had enough fun at your expense. And remember, it's never too late for an education.
See, I knew you could do it. Class disparity and burger flipping is a good start. You need to work on the spelling though. Calling somebody a moron and simultaneously misspelling "briliance" doesn't really work in your favor.
The US has cut marginal income tax roates 4 times. Coolidge, Kennedy, Reagan, W Bush. Each time the The government has received more tax revenue. Its a fact.
And another point. Taxes are like crap, it rolls down hill. People who make things and own companys that sell things pass on the excessive taxes that government throws at them and attaches is to the price of the good or service which they sell.
Thats how it works. So when legislate tax the rich, it hits the consumer
Historical Average Length Of A Recession in the United States: 11 Months. Any "stimulus" planned after that is contrary to history and experience. Rachael calls this a stimulus bill; her opinion. But can someone tell me how many jobs are created by 150 million dollars on honeybee insurance? That is part of the bill. The Democrats won; they should be glad they call the shots. Why should they care if the Republicans support the bill? If Dems are right, they SHOULD want ALL the credit. Hmmm.
And if it is not just a "recession"? Especially considering how the rest of the planet is also spinning down that porcelain tube as well? what then? The Democrats won yes - pity the rebbies cannot accept that fact of life and let the adults get to work in actually rebuilding both the country and the rest of the planet. Again.
Such a witty retort. I'll have to remember "go cry about it emo kid" whenever I really want somebody to feel my scorn. Don't worry, I'll be sure and give credit where credit is due. Brilliance like yours deserves recognition.
how can you say she's not biased! yes the truth is not bias, but the truth she reveals is. two sides of the story are not shown here. i'm not a conservative but i think if you believe what rachel maddow says wholeheartedly, do your research. you will find an abundance of pork barrel spending and unnecessary government programs thrown in solely for the democratic party's benefit. maddow thinks going even further into a billion, maybe even trillion dollar deficit is a good idea and i disagree.
"parisan coont is braindead" isn't slang unless they changed the definition of the word slang in the last five minutes. "parisan coont" is gibberish. "braindead" I was going to let slide, but since you've misspelled it twice now, you fail on that comment too since clearly you're the one that is obviously brain dead.
I like how Maddow explains economics as if she was talking to a 13 year old. It's much more complex than that mrs. maddow, but for your audience, I suspect it's right up their ally.
Apparently the sarcasm went whistling right over your head. She's explaining it in a sardonic fashion because clearly the republicans are too damn dense to figure this shit out on their own.
"u lesbian...those video clips were of people who don't want to rushanother financial crisis.... "
Is there a special factory that churns out fucking morons like you, or did your mom just drop you on your head one too many times when you were experiencing a crucial developmental stage of childhood?
So let us fix this issue by throwing money at it and becoming socialist! If these leftist morons would see that capitalism is the answer we wouldn't be in this mess. Government caused the recession by getting their filthy hands involved and they are now trying to fix it with the same worthless ideas they always spew out. I've never heard of this Rachel Maddow and it's for a good reason...she is an idiot and she hasn't got an economic bone in her body.
Democrats want to spend it in America so they can promote jobs for the Americans, republicans want to take the money outside of the country to China for their imported goods or their wars that they want to start!
Don't agree with me? Just try to reflect on the past 8 years that republicans were in charge!
Money is there to be spent? Its people like you who got us into the recession in the first place. Whats wrong with saving money like in the days before massive credit card debt and a -1% savings like we have today? This bill is not going to create sustainable jobs, it is going to redistribute wealth in pork-barrel projects and subsidies. The reason we're here isnt decreased spending, thats the effect. The reasons lead back to gov't restrictions and bad loans. Throwing money around solves nothing
Amazing -- Bush & Company spend TRILLIONS and give a TRILLION in tax breaks to the top 5% (52% went to the top 1%) -- and got us farther in debt THAN ALL PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS COMBINED.
Now that it's time to get the middle class moving again -- THEY SAY NOW WAY.
They should be laughed at each time they pretend to be conervative on spending.
People spending too much was what started the recession in the first place. People were taking out loans on homes they couldn't afford and banks were more than willing to provide the money and couldn't conceive of so many people defaulting on their loans.
No one's going to like it, but people need to be saving, not spending. It may make things worse in the short term, but it's better for the economy in the long run to have a financially secure population.
Well, you don't spend 4.1 billion on ACORN, a non profit org that is involved in Voter Fraud, and you don't spend money on STD Prevention in a a bill that is supposed to create jobs.....
well wouldnt u need to hire ppl to help prevent std's like doctors spokesman ppl ppl going around and telling ppl about std's as for acorn i dont give to shits about acorn that shit was taken out moron
The fact that it was actually in there is ridiculous. Yeah, instead of adding more money to infrastructure.
STD prevention doesn't create enough jobs, it is there because of the NANCY Pelosi agenda. I would like to know that that money is being used to create a mass amount of jobs since that is what the package is supposed to do.
every lil bit helps one u save lives with std prevention and create a few jobs an average person should make at least 2 million dollars in their life time and if that person dies from an std then u lose that 2 million and the only mass amount of jobs would be infrastructure if your looking for another profession that would create alot of jobs then youll have a tough time
Why do so called 'conservatives' think theres even a defense in thier case. The free market ideology + aggressive credit + costly criminal war took us down from once was a suffiecient middle class economy. They dont get to complain, thier idoeology is what sank the ship. Bush/Cheney was a failure and will go to prison for breaking so many laws. Theres no leg for them to stand on, what we see is a dying race of fat white idiots with no understanding of fair procedure or public demand.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Rachel! Just yesterday I listen to two Replugs talk about giving tax cuts to small businesses which would create jobs! I ask you how many small businesses pay a wage a person with or without a family can live on? Replugs have the same old ideas: tax cuts, tax cuts and more tax cuts. Is this all they know? I am very thankful to still be employed, but if this keeps up even I with 20 years of senority will loose my employment and then my home! Thanks Replugs!
We tried to tell everybody the war was a mistake. It's bankrupt the country and made America enemies in the Middle East for another 1500 years. One religious cult fighting another religious cult. Hell, Moses must have been smokin' the good stuff.
There is a difference between spending 1 trillion dollars on wars and millionaire tax cuts and infrastructure and middle class tax cuts. If you believe that the government shouldn't spend money then tell the police, firefighters, road workers, teachers, and any other public good that they aren't needed. Also I trust a Rhodes Scholar over your opinion everyday, you can't be that smart if you think deficit is spelled D-E-F-E-C-T
Am I wrong ? I thought that the percentage increase in the size of government, compared to any Republican Administration, during the Clinton Administration was the lowest. And I may add none of your Republicans so called fiscal conservatives balanced the budget the persons you implied to be socialists did. Stay with facts. By the way I sincerely hope you still have a job and a home to go to. Thank you, Bush and the Neanderthal thinking Republicans.
josdelara-I beleive the gov't actually got smaller under Hoover.
Clinton had his spending kept in check by Gingrich and the Repubs. This was also during the run up of the internet bubble. Sure the economy looked good for a few years. But, then things like Worldcom and Enron showed us that a lot of the economic bubble was built on lies.
The Repubs have recently not been fiscal conservatives. Neither have the Dems. Jobs are lost because of many factors, not just political parties.
Your idea that Gingrich and his crew kept Clinton in check and therefore are responsible for the health of the economy during the Clinton years is somewhere between standard right wing revisionist history and laughable.
integral- Has your Bush Hatred Syndrom progressed so far that you are unable to view the world in a rational way? To blame Bush for everything makes as much sense as to credit him for everything.
Gas prices were really high, and now they are low... Should I credit Bush for this? Or, since lower gas prices are good, perhaps I should thank BHO.
You go Rachel. Sarah Palin is the most popular person in the GOP; doesn't that turn on an alarm for you. The GOP is continuing it's journey to the bottom. Sure the Dems are jackasses, but they are head and shoulders above the pack of retards in the GOP. The GOP are lost since their exalted leader, Dubya, is gone.
"instead of coming up with the most effective plan"
what is she talking about??? republicans are not just saying no and trying to fight the bill; they have their own bill they proposed which uses much less money, and, when tested the same way the democrats plan was, showed to create more jobs. im not a republican, but i hope people see both sides instead of listening to rachel...
Cable news is complete garbage for any serious discussion of these issues. To find good analysis you have to go online and read the blogs of economists. The republicans do have strong reasons for their opposition that aren't political- including permanent increases in government spending. In addition these infrastructure projects will have a significant lag effect. And why do we need UNION labor to build our bridges? All that does is screw the taxpayers who have to pay higher salaries.
integral- perhaps I should have said that is reinforced my stereotype of Liberals. I am sure there are Liberals somewhere that are able to discuss without insulting or lying. I have not found any yet, but there must be a few somewhere...
"i dont understand lesbos they dont like men yet they go out with women that look like dudes"
Judging by your comment, I'd be willing to bet there are a lot of things that are far beyond your level of comprehension. Like pretty much anything beyond the first grade.
Democrats. You have the extra couple republican votes you need to pass this. Have some balls and just pass it. The Republicans are ruthless. If we don't stand strong, they will bully everyone they can into getting what they want. BUT THEY LOST THIS ELECTION! So do your jobs and get it done.
What got America in this trouble is the last 8 years of ineffective and incompetent leadership (i.e. Bush et al)... also what's needed is not a short term quick fix, as metioned in the video, but a long term, realsitic plan! In my humble opinion anyway...
RACHEL! It's ironic that usually liberals complain about the consumerism/materialism of our society (rightly so) and many would agree that this is caused by our reliance on debt and credit (cards)....yet the liberal policy makers just want to pump up more spending and credit...they want people to buy more stuff we don't need...to reinflate the fake bubble. It needs to crash, folks...and it's gonna hurt me too. But ultimately, this system is immoral and deep down I bet you know that. (?)
You make a valid point. No one political (emphasis on political) party has the advantage on the real issue of the decay of society due to our materialistic ways. I long for a world where we actually CAN judge a person on his character, and not on the width and contents of his pocket book. Bravo, radiofriendly, bravo.
People are not buying because they realize they don't need 90% of the crap thats out there. So yes, you have job loses. But try and create real jobs by decriminalizing industrial hemp.
And what happens when the stimulus (like all in the past) doesn't create any jobs? You can't spend your way out of a depression! Spending is why we're in this mess. Your destroying our currency! Both parties & the federal reserve are driving us into another great-er depression! Wake up people!
If RAchel is such a smart gal, why is she still pumping Americans to consume more (buy, buy, buy)..... how does that lead to prosperity! It does not, in fact that is how we got into this mess, end of story!
Wow, you really missed what she was saying here. She wasn't telling us to consume more, she was saying the economy needs to enable us to buy more. You really missed the point.
A semantics battle over the difference of "buy more" or "consume more"....
Hahaa, you are really reaching deep.... I wonder if on a "no bullshit" level, if there is actually a difference. Try again to make the point any more obscure!
She totally contradicts herself by saying at the beginning of the clip that the way to stimulate the economy was through creating demand by giving people money by spending tax payers money. People who get Supplemental Security Income — 7 million poor Americans who are elderly, blind or disabled — would get one-time extra payments of $250.
KamikazeKoscki 3 years ago
And all that money will be spent and circulate, helping the economy. Great.
But even better is that those who get it NEED IT DESPERATELY!!! It is not a joke. It is not a joke to need food stamps and unemployment. Obama is giving them a chance to endure the crisis. Like his medical insurance for kids. It is necesary money and people will be grateful to get it. Which the Republicans don't want because those millions who get it will vote for Obama.

Talk about Econ 101...
And tax cuts worked for Reagan btw...

rofl, did she just reference Moody's to try to prove her point? I'm sorry, but both Dems and Republicans are more. Spending from the government is bad because they can only spend what they take from you. You can't cut taxes without cutting spending. If the government could actually stimulate the economy with food stamps and infrastructure, we wouldn't ever have had poverty to begin with.

Hmmm.

People spending too much was what started the recession in the first place. People were taking out loans on homes they couldn't afford and banks were more than willing to provide the money and couldn't conceive of so many people defaulting on their loans.
No one's going to like it, but people need to be saving, not spending. It may make things worse in the short term, but it's better for the economy in the long run to have a financially secure population.

solid220 3 years ago
The fact that it was actually in there is ridiculous. Yeah, instead of adding more money to infrastructure.
STD prevention doesn't create enough jobs, it is there because of the NANCY Pelosi agenda. I would like to know that that money is being used to create a mass amount of jobs since that is what the package is supposed to do.
DrRobert909 3 years ago
every lil bit helps one u save lives with std prevention and create a few jobs an average person should make at least 2 million dollars in their life time and if that person dies from an std then u lose that 2 million and the only mass amount of jobs would be infrastructure if your looking for another profession that would create alot of jobs then youll have a tough time
solid220 3 years ago
Actually, investing more money into the auto industry would help. Investing money into Mass Transit would help.
I'm not saying that STD prevention is bad, I just don't think it belongs in this bill!

josdelara-I beleive the gov't actually got smaller under Hoover.

THE GOP put the final nail in their coffin by their conduct this wk.
The Dems already have a 59-41 edge in the Senate & 2010 looks worse for the GOP than 2008.
The Dems have 17 of 59 seats up for election (roughly 28%). The GOP has 19 of 41 (almost 50%).
17 Dems seats look safe.
But maybe 6 or 7 GOP Senators are resigning & about 10 seats could be lost.
I don't wanna see 1 party, so I hope Ron Paul will organize a new party to re-place the GOP (1 not controlled by corporations).
