I've heard of some pretty amazing pyrocumulus formations, complete with static discharge and even weird precipitation... I would think that a really large one might even be able to spawn a small vortex if the uplift was sustained and strong enough... Would make for some trippy studies!

Flew into LA from Australia yesterday and could see the smoke from way off the coast. Air around LAX isn't great to begin with, but it was a dirty brown from the ash.

Definitely - being downwind of this stuff will really make you gag. Oddly, I've seen smoggy days nearly this thick in Pasadena before - you could hardly see to the other side of the freeway. Welcome to L.A.!
