  • Judy was a lot more emotional than Liza. Liza is this broadway singer while Judy is a SINGER.

  • Fantastic!

  • Eins der besten Videos aller Zeiten!!!!

  • I do think this blows Mr. Sinatra out of the water..

  • I got to see her live a few months ago, and she STILL knocks this song out of the park.

  • @sissillian1

Technically, Liza was THE star along with Barbara S., They were the ONLY BANKABLE stars for a period of time. Also, Liza won an Oscar for best actress. She was, and is, a superstar.

  • i forgot how great Carson was he will all was be the best as will Liza the way he talked to the people he really liked he was one in a billion

  • i forgot how great Carson was he will all was be the best as will Liza

  • i forgot how great carson was he will all was be the best as will Liza

  • poor microphone taking on so much talent I wish Judy was still alive so sad R.I.P Judy Garland

  • Can't compare Judy with Liza. Different singing styles and presence. Funny thing is Liza M. still wears the exact cut of clothes...very dated. Same kind of 'ingénue' bow. Oh well. When she was good, she was good.

  • I love this; she does sound just like her mother there; wow!

  • Heck, Liza brought the best of old Hollywood performing influence into the mid pop era.

  • Simply amazing Liza.

  • Liza being fabulous!

  • This was the era of her best voice!

  • Diva!

  • OMG! What great lungs she possesses!

    She is genetically gifted!

    Vonderful! Truly Vonderful!

  • I love her outfit ...her whole energy ...her everything! She is awesome.

  • Absolutely DAZZLING !!!! I've always felt she has more talent than her mother had.

    Such a classic lady!!!

  • she reminds me sooo much of her mother..looks and sounds like judy Garland

  • WOW,,,, Now this Girl can sing.........Great !!!

  • That has to be Halston. And who do those pins remind you of?

She's the master here. x Thanks

  • work that mic lead girl! lol xx

  • Holy Crap.

  • She almost never shows her legs. They're not skinny, so I guess the slacks are more comfortable for performing...

  • I love her and I wish to see her for real one day

  • what can you say!? She is the best!

  • like my uncle said, she sang like God but looked like a horse

  • I remember seeing this the night it was on. wow - soooo many years ago.

  • The performance is unreal. So powerful. What a treat to hear her talk about 'Arthur'.

  • Ohhh my God

    Wonderful Talent..

    Bravoooo

    y ole con oleeeee

  • DeanLeonard1,

    ABSOLUTELY!

  • Liza at the peak of her vocal powers. And with stage presence out the wazoo.

  • This is the Liza we know.

  • she had a cute figure here

  • hell nooo!! liza sings like a drunken man.. lorna has the same voice quality as judy

  • She was a great performer but she belts eveything. You can really hear her defincies when she sings softly, that's why she avoids going there. Very intellegent show woman. She played to all her strengths and she had personality. Loads of personality.

  • i absolutely agree. too much chest voice pushed up too high and lots of laryngeal holding has ruined her voice. i saw her last december twice when her show was on broadway and even though she was vocally terrible, i couldn't stop watching. her acting and character is always so there that the voice doesn't really seem to matter. so inspiring! she really did use to have a wonderful voice when she was younger, though!

  • I don't think it was so much the way she sang that hurt her voice. After all, she started singing professionally at the age of 16 or 17 and never sounded better than when she was 40. Even at 50 she was still a great singer. I think smoking, drugs and, above all, that nodes surgery she had are the things that have hurt her voice. I agree that her skill at performing still makes her a great act but I miss her voice at it's peak.

  • I agree with the wear and tear theory, and I did see/hear her at the Hollywood Bowl and felt the differance from her 'glory' day's, but the broad still knows how to perform and added a little Judy to her set as well.

Who are we to throw stones? Can you get up there and belt it out?

  • She looks like Lady Gaga especially the eyes and the nose, it's unbelievable.

  • lady Gaga is good but she NEVER will be like Liza!

  • Where did you hear she "ruined her voice with drugs". All you'd need to do is read a wikipedia page, or a short bio to see she had polps on her throat removed in the late 90s and then suffered a potentially fatal brain disease. Her singing career spans 4 decades with Tonys, An Oscar, Emmys, A Grammy Living Legend award. To marginalise her with your sappy conclusion, probably 3rd hand information from your bitchy musical theatre teacher is plain disrespectful and FALSE.

  • and where did the polps come from??? I mean she must have had depressions otherwise she wouldn´t be a drinker! see the voice is connected to our soul! I love her to death! she is an amazing performer! Still she had a rough live with drug abuse!

  • Julie Andrews had the EXACT same procedure the year before, even with the same doctor... Are you going to tell me Julie Andrews "ruined her voice with drugs" too? Liza Minnelli is one of the most dedicated performers, without dedication and a strong work ethic she would not have achieved so much in one life time. You musn't dismiss someone because they have addiction problems. You are a horrible, gossiply, tabloid hungry person. LEARN ENGLISH!!

  • I LOVE you for saying that!

  • I don't understand women with short hair

  • I sometimes find women with short hair very attractive. Even if they have their heads shaved, cause I gotta tell you when Natalie Portman had her head shaved in "V for Vendetta", she looked HOT!

  • GOD she is great.............

  • i love this song her voice gives me chills good ones!!

I think she sounds a lot like her mom ..

    peace

  • @pyschedelicpatti yeah liza's voice is like satan gargling nails.

  • I <3 Liza :)

  • boy she really perfected it the longer she sang it, huh? the good news is she aint done singin' yet!

  • haha! I love that! Yes! She's STILL A powerhouse, and in my opinion this song sounds better now than it ever did!

  • i love this song!! I love NEW YORK!

  • I ♥ Liza : )

  • Hehe Liza doesn't like froot loops.. and neither do I! ;)

  • Entertainer/Worker/Thank God for Johny, and LOVE to Liza!

  • I think Judy had much better voice

  • they have the same voice!!!

  • Liza cant sing to save her life

even here when she was young her voice was awful

  • fuck, I'm not talkin' about this. Obviously she's ain't gonna better than Liza, she's the best.

  • Judy was one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century

Liza couldnt get work on a cruise ship if she wasn't her daughter

Liza has traded off her mother all her life she never shuts up about Mama because its her one claim to fame

  • well..the fact that you dont like her does not mean that she cant sing or act..she is a great singer and dont need her mamma to proove it..if she has not talend she had been disappeared after judys death..and why you watch her videos? If you dont like her stay away!

  • ok, now I understand mother-daughter thing.

  • are you implying I have a "mother-daughter thing"??

  • yes,u do have the thing i said.

  • how would YOU know?

  • well because u remembering judy and liza as it was just few years ago, but Judy Garland is already death, and Liza rarely sings on broadway. Like few times a year. Just let it go!

  • sorry - I didnt understand a word of that

why do you think I have a "mother daughter thing" ?

  • I think you should go forward and forget that's she's a Judy's daughter, who's by the way is dead. And more focus on her current career.

  • Do you know anything about Judys work. She was a brilliant actress and totally lovely to look at.

  • you're talking about someone you have never met!!

And you're talking about Liza Minnelli !!

little bit of over-reaction there perhaps

  • I am 6 years younger than you, and by God I am far more mature than you. A 21 year old telling someone to commit suicide? What a teenager type attitude. God bless.

  • Lorna, is that you?

  • Liza is beautiful

  • God..she sounds just like Judy..I LOVE HER!!

  • Re: "manic" and "energetic," remember that she started off as -- and continues to be -- an actress. As a matter of fact she is well-known for the way in which she inhabits the characters of her songs.

Also, if you think this manic and energetic, you ain't seen nothing yet!

  • To doriamunro -- I know you were just kidding, but wasn't Studio54 already closed well before 81? As for her "manic behaviour" and "energetic performance," she is still kickin' it -- AA dedication and all. I just saw her last month in NY at The Palace and the ol' gal still has it in spades!

  • Ah, where to start? To grai - FYI, Liza got through MANY an interview without mentioning mama. She didn't need anybody's coattails. To no288 - no need to worry about the mic wire, probably - she learned to swing it from her godmother Kay Thompson, musical genius for MGM. Watch some vids from Judy's tv show and you'll see she has the wire mastered as well.

  • we that love her worry about her i can't bear

the thought of life without her

  • VERY cool - back when the Tonight SHow was GOOD!!

  • wow poor old Liza got through an entire interview without mentioning her mother once!! A record!!

  • Just what we need in this world - another analytical-bashing - self proclaimed expert in analyzing another person's talent & misses the joy of some great talent. Thank goodness we don't hear from this guy regularly.

  • You haven't seen the other Liza Minnelli clips I've commented on - I regularly put on a quip at her expense - I think she's awful

    love Judy Garland though!!

  • am not going to waste my time with a self-righteous - know it all.

    Try examining yourself !!!

  • my original statement muyst have touched a nerve of someone who is use to having things their way.

  • yeah a total stranger who thinks Liza Minnelli is a "great talent" on a youtube thread - you're really bugging me! You know so much about me!

  • Need to listen, appreciate, the contributions of others. If you can learn to be a teachable person then the focus comes off yourself & then you will understand others & respect.

  • From what you've typed in here so far I get the feeling you're not in any fit state to be handing out advice!!

  • OR you are not fit to apply these in your life.

  • I don't think Judy Garland would love you very much though for talking about her little girl in the ways that you have!

  • well..liza is a great talent exactly like her mother

and that is a general truth...

  • sorry - not even close

  • Ms. Minnelli Is Grade A Fabulous! ALWAYS!

  • She's the best.

  • Oh my god!

    she has something nobody have

  • I couldn't help looking at the wire from the microphone 'cus i was a bit nervous she would step on it or maybe fall...but luckily she didn't. Good job Liza!

  • Liza looks fantastic here, great!!!

  • It was Bob Mackie I think...not positive but it would make sense. he did most of her clothes! Reminds me that I am GAY!!lol

  • she is the best!

  • Hot! Hot! HOT! Where was Liza during the NYC blackout? Her energy level is off the grid!! Love Ya, LM!

  • It was 1981 so she had probably been to Studio 54 before Carson and thus explaining the energy level!lol I am joking! I Love Liza too!!!!

  • i think this performance is actually ALOT better than her performance in the film. this is spectacular her star power is astounding! I LOVE HER!

  • I feel sorry for people in 1981. If they would've tuned in at about 4:30 they would've missed that performance. Today, we would've just rewound our TiVo. The people from 1981 are finally catching this performance that they missed back in 1981 NOW. On YouTube.

Maybe, on the off-chance they had money and had one of those primitive VHS or Beta, but.... most likely not. Most likely they're finally catching now. Poor 1981 people.

  • Liza doing her classic song that is still her anthem to this day...clearly Johnny & the audience loved it & the interview is fun to watch all these years later!

  • i've always thought of liza minnelli as being a slightly smdged carbon copy of her mother, though i think, of the two of them, judy garland was much more talented, a natural talent, while liza is more mannered and studied, more into melodramatic theatrics, much less natural than her mother and, over all, not nearly as real as garland was. liza is entertaining, if you go in for the type of music and heavey acing she's selling.

  • I'll never understand why some people waste their time watching videos of artists they don't like in the first place, and then why do they feel the need to comment about it to the rest of us? Sure, Judy and Liza have similarities and they have differences. I can still love and appreciate them both. I can also love Barbra and others. Just enjoy whomever you enjoy without making it into some sort of competition.

  • I couldn't agree more! Judy is my heart but her daughters are both class "A" entertainers in their own right! It would be like saying Jane Fonda has her dad's eyes but they are not as pretty! Of course there will be similarities..they are blood! Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli both inherited things from Judy. Most importantly those voices that raise the rafters and the mindset of not trying to be a second rate copy of anyone..but instead a legendary original on their own...individually!

  • You're right. Liza is very, very show-bizzy. What is so amazing about her, however, is her extraordinary energy and ability to BELT, and she has her own unique persona with much of her mother in her talent. It's not just her talent that people love. She is manic in her life and performances, and each one goes to different heights. The one favorite performance keeps me watching her to see what she can do next. Everybody has a favorite. Mine is "Some People" she did at Carnegie Hall.

  • She is brilliant and I love her too, but I can't help but wonder if the "manic" behavior and the height of her energectic performance depends on how good the cocaine was brfore she went on!lol I do love her sooo! Whatever it takes she has found it!lol No offense intended.

  • No, it was the Diet Coke.

  • LOL!! Of course, I should have known that! I drink enough of it myself!! Maybe that is what makes me break into "high-kicks" at the most inopportune moments....like at the mall, in church, the air force base where I visited an old friend!lol

  • love her always, but who let her wear that?

  • What's wrong with it? I think it's hot!! A nice color on her, too.

  • It was probably quite appropriate for the time. Styles have changed in the past 27 years.

  • As long as we have Liza, we still have a bit of Judy. I love em both.

  • Liza at her peak.

  • Never seen this one either, thanks for sharing. :)

  • fantastic! thank you for posting this. i've never seen it before.
