Casting mostly good: McCoy was DEAD ON! Uhura was NOT Uhura & what the heck was the romance between her & Spock about?! Story was not good: Time travel in this case was wrong. Should have seen Kirk encounter Ruth & later 'the little blond lab technician'(obviously Carol Marcus!), Finnigan & teaching classes('think or sink!"). Then later on Farrugut during Cromium Cloud-Creature attack. Reboot, Vulcan's destruction & dumb death of Kirk's father was wrong. Sets were too bright/Ship looked good.
@Velocity9s if you thought the casting was weird (which it wasn't it was perfect) how do you feel about rumours that they may have Khan Noonien Singh in the next film??
@zombiefan011 No. Uhura was not Uhura...A Khan story? I'd go for that if they have at least some aspects of the 'Rise & Fall of Khan Noonian Singh' novel(My Walter Mitty fantacies, scenes would include Gary-7, Isis[named my black Bermese after her!] & the accomplished Ms Lincoln!). The 2 vol-book would make a good story template. Other 'remade' stories? They should avoid Nomad because of the V-Ger movie. The Ultimate Computer! Kirk's out of a job before he gets started! Q & Borg are TOO recent.
I've only watched the original series with my dad, but I loved this movie. The story was ok but the humor made it really good. The casting was spot on perfection. 10
I'd have given it 4 out of 10 after I saw it, but some days later when I sat in the subway and had some minutes to think about it again, my opinion of this movie dropped to 2,5 out of 10. Couldn't think of a movie that occurs significantly worse to me.
...I don't know many movies in general, might be the reason for the comparably weak impression this one made on me.
I loved all the Star Trek cast. My favourites are Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. He plays a better Chekov than Walter Koenig. Star Trek needs new blood, and I believe that this movie provided that needed new blood. I do hope they make a sequal. Something different for a change, eh?
You know, if all those whining Trekkies would just try to forget for a second the horrible science, the incredibly lazy writing, the obnoxious cinematography, the uninteresting story, the onedimensional characters, the utter reversal of Roddenberry's message, and the overall laughable chaos of this movie, they'd see it as the masterpiece of epic proportions it is!
Wow I eventally found someone else with morethan two brain cells! The story was boring as this type of story has been done to death, there was nothing new. A lot of people seem to be very misguided, this film is not a reboot. On a personal note, TNG was much more interesting, diverse and had far better acting.
i Thought the movie was okay. Spock Was in it so that was cool. My favorite person was MR.SULU!!! I give 8 stars out of 10 because the story got confusing!
I loved the movie. the only series I liked was the original, mainly because my aunt is a trekie ( or treker rather) the movie was updated, but very true to the original, and extreamly fun. I left the theater excited and happy. It also helped that it was filled with people who I was fans of to begin with. I give it a 9.8/10 and my aunt loved it too!
Screenwriters Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman have artistically written off all of Gene Roddenberry's groundbreaking work as non-existent with their introduction of an alternate reality of the Star Trek world.
Being a Star Trek fan (and not a Trekkie), I give it a 1/10.
However, (to go beyond one sentence), out of the three movies I've watched this weekend (X-Men, Derminator, and this one), this film had some of the sharpest and wittiest lines and creative scenes out of all of them.
Except... for Alternate Reality Kirk and elder Spock's chance meeting on the ice planet Hoth - they nuked the fringe on that one.
Hoth was the name of the ice planet in Star Wars. The planet that alternate Kirk met older Spock on was called Delta Vega. It was referenced in the third episode of the original series. God, I feel nerdy
Gary Mitchell, the man with mutated ESP powers from the galactic-barrier in the second pilot "Where no Man has Gone Before", was going to be marooned on Delta Vega, which had a Lithium mining station so they could repair the damaged Warp (FTL) nacelles...
And, why do we only see carnivores here that Darwin himself would scoff at? Remember the new new addition of Star Wars where there are 'buffalo' roaming deserts? If you want us to believe it's capable, then take five seconds of film and give us a plausible notion that such creatures can survive in worlds like this. By this I mean... carnivores eat herbivores eat grass....
The grudge that is on my mind and everyone elses the destruction of Vulcan and that was bang out of order! And JJ crossed the line! So please dont give him chance to write another STAR TREK feature that defies the laws of the STAR TREK timeline. Gene would never approve of this or the final conclusion, because what was done is done and no attempts where made to change the aftermath of both planets
As for presentation of image and sound Im likely enough to live in the United Kingdom and travelled to the most powerful THX screen in the UK in fact the whole of Europe! Empire Leicester Square screen 1, JBL installation 56KW THX sound system over its original 13KW JBLTHX!
Digital image was spot on! Front row and centre around 26 feet away from the 16 stacks of JBL 4645C 20KW subs! Colours where magical! It goes beyond what bluray is capable of, now then!
Sound was out of this world! it was Dolby six-track digital reference from start to end! Amazing Life THX deep note trailer at the start was again WOW to hear I mean feel! It goes beyond the $6million dollar home theatre, and that guy needs to be rushed off to medical care.
The black hole sequence WOW Im sure my SPL db meter was just near the 120dbc weighting mark, thou I wasnt expecting that to happen and must have missed it by a few milliseconds.
I saw STAR TREK twice on Thursday May 7th. I mean if Im going to travel 120 miles I want to see it twice for technical excellence in many ways and comport presentation is what makes it count.
Id give STAR TREK 10/10 for picture and sound at the Empire Leicester Square. Its finished playing in screen 1 and is now in screen 2 and 4 I think, that is want the Empire manager said on the phone yesterday? Its possible it might go back in Empire 1 so if your die hard STAR TREK fan or like big sound check out the Empire Leicester Square!
As a continuation of the universe I know and love . . . 7.5/10
The non stop action was great and the character development was too . . . for the most part. Having Leonard Nimoy on was definitely a step in the right direction.
Couldnt agree more on the first point. Couldnt agree less on the second. Its what Trek has become. Its here. Folks love it. Get over it. By the way, I've been die hard for all forms of Trek since the early 80's. I, too, stand for what Trek was. This aint it. But its changed sos to make enough bucks to keep it alive. Nice trade, I guess. Once again - its all fr fun - get over it.
Excellent movie; Excellent production value; Slightly off from a trekkie tech point of view but, despite its overbearing coolness, should please fans who would see this decade-spanning franchise come back to life and keep pace with our ever-changing culture.
This was possibly one of the best movies I have ever seen. Fantastic action, amazing writing and plot, funny and quirky, it had everything you needed. The new Kirk and Spock are fantastic. An easy 10, go see it you won't be disapointed
nope! but that's what everyone thinks! (this thing's a spoof member? :D) They are quite a sexy couple though.... *fangirling* i'm gonna shut up before i annoy someone..
Hey, I have an idea... if we go back in TIME and say that this bad guy changes everything... we don't have to make this prequel relate to the movies or show. And I say YES. i thought this movie wasnt that good, almost confused me as much as back to the future and it doesnt follow real star trek, like you could slap star wars 7 and it would make almost as much sense, but i liked it.

The plot was average at best. Basically the director said "I am not going to have the gonads to make my own space opera with my own ideas, so I am going to take this Star Trek label I know I can make money with, bastardize it with timeline hocus pocus, violating Trek history and basic science, yet schizophrenically rehashing at least 1 old TV series plotline, and voila I have something to make a soulless profit for the summer" . The movie is mostly fluff and will be forgotten in a few months.
What people that arn't socially inept nerds that sit in their mom's basement discussing who was better, spock or Kirk......then yeah, i actually enjoyed it.
Why does everyone always single out Trekkies as weird nerds? Sure there's some weird Trekkies, but there's a lot of normal ones too, including myself, a girl who regularly gets asked out, but also regularly watches Star Trek. Sorry to comment rant, but that opinion kind of frustrates me.
"There's some defendant story inconsistencies..." Um, did she pay attention to the movie? They were very clear about the timeline being changed in the movie itself. O_o
I feel sorry for William Shatner. Almost all traces of him were erased......he was a good actor, too.
I was kinda surprised. I think the new Spock did a better job than Nimoy in this movie. Nimoy, of course, probably just showed up, grumbled a bit, smiled at the camera and delivered the cheesy lines, and went home.
Winoa Ryder as Spock's mother.....that's a scary thought.
Captain Kirk and Skyler take on deranged planet destroying romulens from the futures future.
I give it a 8.7 out of 10
Although when Kirk and Mcoy were running through the ship (when Kirks hands were all puffy) I couldn't help but to think. "what are we in the boiler room?"
Seen this last night, was immense to say the VERY least, its right up there with the Lord of the Rings & The Matrix, it is truly something else! 9.9999999 out of 10, I bloody love J.J Abrams work, he's a visionary!
Every now and then a truly great movie is made that i sso good you see the fucker twice, The new star trek is an incredable peice of work. i took the wife and kids she is now a treky. lol. I was on the edge of my seat. mind blowing special effects and great acting the arguments between kirk and spock are very well writen. Totaly loved this film i was blown away.
ive just watched the movie on the HUGE IMAX, Ive never had so many chills from watching a movie and its FX, some of the scenes arent in the trailers and are simply TOO EXCITING, anyone else LOVE the new sound when all the starships went into warp??!!! and the silent scenes in space were creepy. OUTSTANDING FILM, best film of the decade, 10 out of 10. Star Trek is very very COOL. :)

I am a 46 year old male who has never had sex (yet) and I live with my mother, and work at the local Market Basket.
I am also looking for a woman who loves Trek to date me please!

It truly was a change from the old guard of Star Trek. This is a great thing. I give it an 8 out of 10 because it made me want more installments.

Don't get me started on overuse of the cutesy word "bromance." Hate it.

I loved the movie but hated the soundtrack..
At least they played the old Star Trek theme song at the end...

the movie was AWESOME!
i have never seen a Star Trek episode before either. Perfect cast and story. The Kirk in the movie was like a young William Shatner.

8 because the dialogue got a little tedious at the end there and I found myself losing interest.

awesome cast... awesome storyline and overall awesomeness... the phasers were kinda cheezy though

At some points, I felt like I was watching a rip off version of Star Wars.

Lol the opening sorta reminded me of the BSG finaly, but this is by far the best sci fi movie in the past decade!

The alternate reality rout is something we've all seen done to death, but in this case not only was it necessary, but it was masterfully done. 10/10

It makes for a great symbolism, too.

Leonard Nimoy was in the new Star Trek, therefore it is awesome.

Disthron 2 years ago
too many lens flashes
too much handheld camera
how could old spock just accept his races death?! especially when he could visit the "guardian of forever"
wish Beyonce could have been uhura
didn't like spock making out with uhura
starships are supposed to be built on mars-or in space-til we conquer anti-gravity
nice to know the beastie boys will be remembered in 200 years
ship interior looks like water treatment plant
otherwise a good and exciting movie
meowza3k 2 years ago
Not as cheesy as I expected it to be. And it's a good thing that the movie is a "stand-alone" and not a sequel/prequel or w/e. Pretty good overall.

Seen this last night, was immense to say the VERY least, its right up there with the Lord of the Rings & The Matrix, it is truly something else! 9.9999999 out of 10, I bloody love J.J Abrams work, he's a visionary!
ccampbell800 2 years ago
stop calling it bromance. Yaio fangirls... geez.
It was definitely not my father's star trek, and that is most definitely a good thing.
BrutticusForce 2 years ago
Poor script to say the least. The story behind why Kirk calls McCoy Bones is laughable. They couldn't come up with anything better then that?

Every now and then a truly great movie is made that i sso good you see the fucker twice, The new star trek is an incredable peice of work. i took the wife and kids she is now a treky. lol. I was on the edge of my seat. mind blowing special effects and great acting the arguments between kirk and spock are very well writen. Totaly loved this film i was blown away.
gamesblaster1 2 years ago
ive just watched the movie on the HUGE IMAX, Ive never had so many chills from watching a movie and its FX, some of the scenes arent in the trailers and are simply TOO EXCITING, anyone else LOVE the new sound when all the starships went into warp??!!! and the silent scenes in space were creepy. OUTSTANDING FILM, best film of the decade, 10 out of 10. Star Trek is very very COOL. :)
