She is going for a torch singer sound but fails miserably because she doesn't have the chops for it, which is understandable since she has little experience. Maybe if she gigged solid for 5-10 years and THEN came back we might see something cool. Till then she is like a million other "singers" of average/fair ability trying to take a short cut to mass acceptance.

It's the mic. The mic she is using here on SNL is Bass heavy even to the point of outside the acceptable range. That is to say a mic can be accurate a little on the bass side or a little on the treble side but not too much {if you're going to replicate some sort of real world place or room the singer is singing in.}
