I just thought of something about the ending- when Gackupo smiles at the end when the knife's at his throat, maybe there's a requirement that whoever this demon wants has to -show- that they're willing to kill? Or maybe I'm just reading into it. But the ending seems to lean that way- since you see Gackupo before he was possessed looking ready to kill whatever that is.

Then (possesed) Gakuko hugs him from behind and turns him into flower petals. When Gakupo was stabbed, the demon possesed Gakuko because it didn't want to linger in a dying body and try to find a new one in Gakupo's final moments. Then it found out how strong she was and stayed inside her.

So, he's like wtf because he just remembers the demon possesing him. If you look you can see the demon in the bacround (it has blue eyes, cant miss it!).
