I like several of them, but Allan is probably my favorite in terms of raw creativity. He's one of the best "lick-free" improvisers out there. It would have been nice to hear Frank Gambale. Someone mentioned Michael Brecker. I think it will be a while before the guitar gets to that level, but thanks to Birelli, Allan, and Frank, I'm beginning to believe it's possible.
@materialreal2012 the second tune is an improvisation over the title "frevo rasgueado" (friday night) written by E.Gismonti. I am not sure who plays, i admit it sounds like McLaughlin..
Pete, me and my friends were exploring some other dimensions the other night and watched that interview that you did with Shpongle in Moscow. we were in stitches, Raja is hilarious!
Would have been nice to have a title of the artist appear with each transition. Some people we seed with the idea of fusion jazz would like to take it a step further. "Empower them, and they empower you..." (c)MichaelVernonDavis
@LoBoExtreme you should check out Cynic. They are a little heavier style of music though. LIke metal/Jazzfusion. Still worth checking out though! And dont worry about the english man, i bet none of us could speak your language. haha
@youngman098 They are great but i think the death metal stuff they do will turn off the fusion guys!! if theyare patient and listen to everything they might pick out a few things they dig!
just have to say this is absolutely amazing, Mr. Callard if you can imitate these players' styles so well, your future as one of the greatest guitar players in the world is on its way
haha! It's great fun to hear these classic guitar tunes done slightly wrong. McLaughlin's Guardian Angels, Sco's So You Say, Holdsworth's Shallow Sea & Devil Take The Hindmost, Pat Metheny's Minuano. It's like a party guessing game, which tune is that? and that? Or watching tv commercials with lookalikes. But. Clones don't count. What do you sound like Pete?
Great left brain analyzation of style(s) and mimic. Okay, the truth is I really don't give
a shit. I'm personal sick of imitation. I rather hear many mistakes and "personal"
style then this -- its disturbing too me. Enough is enough, let go back to personal
exploration of identity instead sure technical masturbation. The new that's sot after is individuality similar to that artists you're emulating, be it less or more is better than
In response to all the questions asking which song is playing when, they're all snippets 'in the style of' these players so whilst they will resemble (or in the case of a particular Holdsworth lick - from what I gather - pretty much mimic) part of a particular song, they're not technically from any songs. Or something like that. I have a decent portion of Scott Henderson & Tribal Tech stuff in my collection but not much by the other guys so you will all probably have a better idea than me!
@pobinr I think that's how Pete refers to them in his columns - generally the way the lessons work is any examples are usually either simply in the style of the artist or a very close approximation of a particular lick from a song - perhaps as you say some of them are exactly what was played on original songs - I wouldn't really know as I don't have a whole lot of work by many of these guys. However as someone pointed out below, the Michael Brecker examples obviously aren't genuine clips ;)
Or did you mean that the audio clips are actually taken from original songs? GT wouldn't have the rights to do that - Pete Callard is playing all the examples you are hearing here. The great big talented git.
wait.... Pete played all this??? Im a holdworth freak and those licks were AWESOME!.. im soo jealous, the joe pass was awesome as well.. it was ALL Awesome! inspiring to say the least
I don't have them uploaded unfortunately and with the scanner being out of action (again) for the time being I doubt they'll appear anytime soon, so apologies. However, I do suggest to everyone that trying to learn these licks (& others) by ear will be much more beneficial to your playing & musicianship than having tabs & video demonstrations spoon-fed to you. That's how all these guys did it!
No problem mate, be my guest. I have some video of Pete rehearsing with Craig and the rest of the band. And live footage of them playing on Janice Long's Radio 2 show!
It's from several different issues - can't remember exactly which ones off the top of my head but if I get chance to have a scoot through them all then I'll let you know.
Makes you wish he would post a couple of more vids. The audience vids on YT of him playing are impressive but it would be good to see something specially produced. (I think I mean showing this stuff off).
I've don't know Pete personally at all, but from what one of my ACM tutors was telling me he'd probably be the last person to do that - really quiet unassuming sort of guy, happy to let others take center stage & probably not comfortable being in the spotlight sort of thing. I doubt very much he'd appreciate this video being posted to be honest! (Sorry Pete)
Ha ha...Lots of people say that....BUT it IS Pete Callared......I have All the magazines and cds from guitar techniques....He is a Brilliant player.....
I will say this. The Holdsworth stuff is Allan himself, I own the recordings. I have some of the Henderson as well, and it's Scott himself playing here...so my guess is that he's compiled a lot of great snippets, but is not playing himself.
I appreciate you watching and commenting, but I assure you that Pete Callard is quite simply that good and sounds that authentic. Not to mention that such an established magazine would never get away with simply using original recordings without permission and passing them off as their own.
If you're referring to the drums in the backing tracks (why else mention drummers?) then obviously the backings would've been put together pretty quickly with the obvious emphasis being placed on the guitar (or guitar-o-phone) parts - the magazine is called Guitar Techniques after all ;)
Nah I gave Guthrie some well earned time off, this one is all Pete - it always astounded me how he managed to nail the style of every player he looked at so I figured it was time to let all those non GT readers in on it :)

Oh and it was I that took the opening picture of Pete on this vid, when we were on tour with Craig Charles' band "The Eye"
