Incredible. Such a simple song, yet so so powerful. I personally like the line: "some enchanted night I'll be with you". The versions, though musically very similar, have a different tone to me.
Something tells me this song was modified to fit a happy/bittersweet ending at the end of Good Will Hunting. The way that the song is portrayed in Good Will Hunting doesn't make much sense to me. I feel that all songs are stories in themselves and I'm glad to have finally heard the whole story.
@delmodet FIRST VERSE I'll fake it through the day/ With some help from Johnny Walker Red/ And the cold pain behind my eyes/ That shoots back through my head/ With two tickets torn in half/ And a lot of nothing to do/ But it's all right/ 'Cuz some enchanted night I'll be with you. FIRST BRIDGE Tarot cards and the lines in my hand/ Tell me I'm wrong/ but they're untrue.
@delmodet SECOND VERSE I've got plans for both of us/ That involve a trip out of town/ To a place I've seen in a magazine/ That you left lying around./ I can't hold my liquor/ But I keep a good attitude,/ 'Cuz it's all right./ Some enchanted night I'll be with you. SECOND BRIDGE And though you'd rather see me gone/ Than to see there'll come a day/ I'll be waiting for you anyway.
@delmodet THIRD VERSE Next door the TV's flashing blue/ Frames on the wall./ It's a comedy from the 'Seventies/ With a lead no one recalls/ Vanished into oblivion./ It's easy to do./ And I cried a sea/ When you talked to me/ The day you said we were through./ But it's all right./ Some enchanted night I'll be with you.
@delmodet Hope this helps. I speak English, and even I had some trouble with a word here and there, and where he punctuates sentences. His delivery is so hushed, and the breaks are idiosyncratic. This is at least close, though.
I don't care which version it is-- I think this is the most beautiful song to have been written in my lifetime. People outside the U.S. seem to appreciate Elliott more than they do in his own country. I don't know why that is, but I hope he is never forgotten.
Look at all these comments complimenting your music elliott. We sure love and miss you. Even though we never met, Thanks for saving my life through your music(literally). You saved my life, Too bad you couldnt save your own. :( R.I.P. Elliott.
It's me or Elliott can never do anything wrong, no matter what he may have been going through?? At least on his records, which is what will remain after all...
even more painful, even more beautiful than the 'good-will-hunting-polished' version (which doesn't mean that i don't like it). r.i.p elliott, you're probably the greatest ever and only few will know... i'm glad i'm one of those people. from austria to where ever you're now...
@ghostofchat77 2nite is one of those nights when i feel really bad, so i'm flickin' through yt-songs and end up listening to elliott smith (although i've got all his stuff in my record collection, how mad is that?) and i feel even worse - feels good...;)
I really like the live MTV version but I must say this one as well is also very good.
Its also funny I didnt really like this song (any version) originally but the more i listen to his music the more I love it and appreciate it. In the MTV version I kinda like how it sorta jumps from happy to sad. Just like when your mind keeps drifting back to something you dont want to think about right in the middle of another thought. Very sad he is no longer here.
As a recovering alcoholic and a man that has been through so much in my life this song touches me in many ways and chills my soul,,it is really amazing
@RiseOfThePhoenix30 I'm a recovering drug addict and there's something about Elliott Smith's songs that touch my soul so damn much, but I can't exactly put my finger on it.
Hah, I just have depression issues and I can relate. I can't imagine what it must be like to be you listening to the song. Your life experiences, even (maybe especially) when dark, can give you better appreciation for things like this than other people get.
The other version i think was more written for the movie... this, however, was written from his heart ... it feels so much more like him. I love this version.
yeahhh! Thanks for posting =] I like the Good Will Hunting version of this song, too... but I like this one much better. The lyrics seem more personal. RIP Elliott. <3
That is true but, as Elliott said: " Some songs are sad but they make you happy anyway...like "Walk on By" I think is a awesome song and it makes me happy...that's what made it such a good song...even though it's a sad song"
But I get your point, in the case of Miss Misery I feel like he changed it to be happy rather than just wanting to write a happy song.
@AniSmith im pretty sure he wrote this first then the people from good will hunting wanted it but made him rewrite it er someithing to go with the movie.. but im not sure cause like i saw an interview and they asked him about writing it and he said he just wrote what he thought about... maybe he changed it after the movie. well sorry for babbling. :)
@AniSmith I don't agree, both versions are great and each are full of the genius of Smith. The version of the movie is quite brillant for the mixed feelings that run through the song.
@AniSmith Elliott liked to make some of his saddest songs sound happy, because he thought the more contrast there was in a song the more interesting it was. "Waltz #2" is a good example of this. The lyrics are tragic, but the melody makes you want to jump up and dance around the room.
@Malocclusiontenfour Yeah there is a good moment in one of his live concerts where he says "Sometimes a sad song can make you happy... even if it's a sad song... like walk on by"
@AniSmith i don't know if the GWH version is "happier" -at least this version ends on a note of hope "some enchanted evening I will be with you"....but yes, this one seems deeper on many, many levels...just a few tweaks to the lyrics and acoustics makes such a big difference!
this song is for miserable people

Living life a recovering sinner, levitating from losing the love I feared I'd lose.
Miss Misery, are you her or are you the fear I had?
Gone from the face of the scene without a fight, still, some enchanted night...
