actually i grew up on a farm too and all of our bulls acutally starngly got along and we would even put them in the herd while they breed not one singe fight
@willow7233 Did you grow up on a farm with cattle? I grew up with angus cattle, and the bulls do fine together in herds, which is what wild bovine as well as equines will generally do when the males are "bachelors": not in their own herd of females. It is more cruel to keep a herd animal alone and "fights" are posturing behavior to establish dominance. They don't generally result in injury. Cute vid. lol
@ParthenopeSirenum Yes I grew up on a farm with cattle and other animals!! The bulls had to be confined to their own pastures, but not too far where they couldn't see or hear others. The bulls that did get together damaged themselves really bad from fighting!!!
i live in a village and just out my back window there is a field full of cows. its mating season so theres a bull in there, its hilarious seeing it try to mount about 1000 times haha
That "blowing" he's doing around the thirty second mark, is that pretty common? We lose alot of stock when the humidity and temp get near 100 down here in GA. I'd get scared if I saw em blowing here. :-)
I wondered whether you folks did AI or live cover for your cattle. With as many acres and as many head of cattle as you have, I figured live, but some do straight AI.
To the fellow who says 'they cut their horns off': hornlessness (polled) is actually a dominant gene. If either parent is polled, the calf will be polled, although it may carry a gene for horns. All black angus cattle are polled. They are bred for hornlessness.
These are Black Angus bulls. All Black Angus are "polled" -- bred to not have horns. They don't grow them and that is one reason why the breed is popular.
@hondawheeler Also, for breeds that do have horns, you can actually put a really tight elastic band around each horn. The horn tissue immediately under the band decreases in blood circulation and slowly dies and the band moves down millimeter by millimeter until the horn is worn through. It takes 20-50 days, depending on the horn.
i can assure you these young bulls were not fighting,if this were a real fight there would be BIG hits and blood and it could go onn till exhaustion finds a winner, or one gives up and runs, it could go on for maybe 30 mins, btw these are aberdeen angus animals and never develop horns
these bulls would be more than 1000kg. we had an angus bull come in the other day who was smaller than what these bulls look and nowhere near as filled out and bulky and we weighed him he was 1043kg at only 20mths. you would be suprised, they dont look as heavy as they actually are.
I would like to disagree. Bulls weigh in at close to 2000 pounds. And bulls are the reason I have to fix so much fence. They have no respect for a 4 or 5 wire fence when they get to fighting. Normally they will mind a fence but if they are fighting, well that fence is done for.
yes but like the old saying goes...bring up an animal in the direction you want it to go and it will not turn......i have stock of my own and i personally havent been seriously hurt because you need to know the boundaries of the animal...if you respect it it will respect you
some are scary but i have one that i halter broke when he was just born for a angus show and now he ways over 2000 lbs...he is like a little puppy....he follows you everywhere and he licks you and he still leads very good...he is a big softy
That is my biggest worry, we all let our watch down when we have a sweet male animal. The bad thing is he could and might hurt you when you treat him like a pet. All our stock male & feamale are taught to be claim. Any bad habits are corrected and if they can't, they ar CULLED! (Culled: NOT PASSING ONTO ANOTHER PERSON, BUT KILLING THEM OUT.)
I know of a farmer that had a bull and his children used to ride on his back he was a pet. When the workman was bringing in the cows one evening the same bull turned on him and made bits of him.
That is messed up. We were always allowed to deal with the mules, bulls, cows, chickens etc. We were not allowed near the full grown pigs. Especially sows with piglets. Most of the pigs were mellow with humans but there were a few that would kill you if you made a mistake.
