@etaionshrdluxe7 Hi, not so much dull, think warm. But for a bright attack on the bass notes you can try a thumb pick. using the nails on the picking hand brightens the tone.i tend to use the flesh on my finger tips as my nails keep breaking :o/ Enjoy the lessons. Try exercise 3 if this one goes well. :o) Max
in between resting my other fingers (aka pinky, ring, index) do i rest them on the strings? I can switch fingers easier withou but not sure if its a bad habit.
@Guitarmageddon182 Well whatever works best for you but try to keep the hands relaxed and gradually I think you'll find the finger can hang free ready to play. Practice slowly...really slowly. :o)
Hi, sure some players use 4 fingers to play the C major chord, normally with finger 3 on the 3rd fret 6th string and finger 4 the pinky on 3rd fret. So if you alternate the bass notes you don't need to move any fingers.
This is fine but if you want to play melody you're locked into a position with no escape.
Check out a tune like Freight Train, You need the pinky to play the melody. I'll try and do a lesson soon.
Thanks I'm glad it's helping. I'm getting on fine. I'll try and post some more lessons before I go in for another operation. Check out my tracks from the album "Homage" on itunes.
i found this video very useful. I'm waiting for your recovery so i can learn more and more from your lessons. Your just great... and like we use to say in italy 'in bocca al lupo' Max ;)
Wonderful finger picking exercises - very good teaching style and easy to follow. Thank you! I'm trying to learn a song in 4/4 time, and the basic picking uses 5 strings (basic arpeggio going up 5 and down 3), then goes to a chord with only 4 strings so not sure how I can make it sound consistent, or if there is an easy answer to that? (It's Anniversary in the style of Eva Cassidy.)
Brilliant! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for - thank you so much for taking the time to write it down and help me out! I am looking forward to trying this out.
Yes it's going great, lots of gigs with Cherry Lee Mewis and we're starting work on a new album soon. Also playing with John Verity over next few weeks so I have to arrange some "Argent" and "Zombies" songs for the acoustic gigs.
Hi man, your lessons are really great for a beginner like me but I don't speak english well. Could you write the tab of the exercises in the description of the video or in a post?
awesome! I'm learning Naked As We Came by Iron & Wine and it uses this picking pattern! thanks a lot for the lesson :)

As long as you feel comfortable playing and the right noise is coming out, don't worry.
What ever works for you is good but I just have to ensure that I put over the correct technique in the video lesson.
Have fun.

Hi thanks for your kind comment, I've had a long day teaching in London so i hope I can still be of some help!
For example if I was picking that type of pattern for Am to D
The pattern for Am you describe would be picked p,p,i,m,a - strings 5 4 3 2 1 and come back say m,i,p
string 2 3 5 ( back to the root)
The for D double up a note e.g.
p,i,m,i,a strings 4 3 2 3 1 and come back m,i,p again on strings 2 3 4 .
Picking hand fingers
p= thumb. i=index, m=middle,a=ring finger.
Good luck.
