I never played sc1, but it makes me lol that if that clip was sc2 and instead of goliaths you had .....half that number of marines, the mutalisks would have evaporated instantly =/
@Qyburnator The reason he used goliaths is because the goliaths in SC1 have an upgrade called "charron booster" that make the goliath's AA missles out range any air enemies and having the advantage of getting the first shots off.
always gotta laugh at the korean girls screaming over crazy plays in starcraft. actually that's kinda hot that they're into gaming. dunno if girls in other countries would be as crazy into starcraft as those fan girls in this video.
savior had anywhere from 35-45 mutas where as boxer had 30 gols at best. ricochet damage aside and upgrades aside, mutas should've won straight up against the gols: 40 mutas x 9 damage = 360 damage, 30 gols x 10 dmg = 300 damage. also remember this is without the ricochet damage, adding in the ricochet damage you have: 40 x (9+3+1) = 520 damage. mutas should've smoked the gols. but no boxer is a god and he made it happen. =]
forces the mutas to move. Mutas have to speed up and slow down before they can attack while goliaths can just move then stop and attack. So moving back makes the mutas have to constantly be accelerating and decelerating, therefore firing less while the goliaths can fire at their normal rate.
He actually should have targeted mutas individually as well but you can only do so much especially with large groups.
if u look closely, ull see at first he has 3 groups, then 2 but at 2 he starts microing and as he micros he does aim individually while being pushed back its just hard to tell cause of all the bnlue smoke
the americans used the hit and run techniqiue which is shoot run, shoot run. boxer is using the goliaths range and like userasdf said mutas speed and things so he can always be out of range of the mutas
Man I personally main zerg and I'm still not so good. My tactic is usually just set up ground defense and build muta's, then when I have like 9-12 of them I send them to attack the enemy's probes/drones/SCV's which usually works because people don't have a strong defense in that point of the game.
Then I just build up my defenses slowly and keep making mutalisks while I also make some lurkers and ground defenses. Then I upgrade and balance out my forces by making guardians and devourers. Meh.
Actually mutu's aren't that bad against gols. Watched some top lvl(A or something) iccup video of mass mutu vs mass gol, some tanks. Mass mutu owned, but if you are using mutus you really have to split the gols and harrass. Trying to defend with them is suicide.
I'm not that good, but Goliaths have more health, more range, attack faster, and do much more damage damage (to air) than Mutalisks, so why was this surprising?
I just looked it up, and even with the half damage explosive penalty Goliaths ought to be better off when you factor their natural armor in, unless the ricochet isn't affected by armor. Were there just that many more mutalisks? It's tough to count in that video. Or were the upgrades imbalanced?
@UnGato7 much more mutas than gols, also mutas have 120 hp where as gols have 125 so the hp difference doesnt really matter. plus you account in the ricochet damage from (mass) mutas, mutas should've have won if boxer didnt bother microing his gols.
I have personally seen (because I successfully executed it) three dozen Goliaths upgraded on weapons and armor twice chew up 6 dozen Zerglings will full upgrades. That was one bloody peice of ground.
And you have also missed the point. 10 lings would have done nothing. He had 10 Golaiths at the end of the vid. I just did a test run. 25 Golaiths of that nature I described could kill 100 Zerglings fully upgraded. Sending 10 lings would have done nothing but add kills for Boxer.
"25 Golaiths of that nature I described could kill 100 Zerglings fully upgraded. Sending 10 lings would have done nothing but add kills for Boxer."
Your misunderstanding of this entire conversation is epitomized by this comment. You are simply missing the focus of my comment. It's not about what the lings can, or can not do, to the goliaths.
Seeing how my comment was first, I find it ironic that you could say that I have missed the point when you had no idea what I was talking about in the first place.
continue: and greater range, so the only way u can win it is to keep pulling back and using hold position to utilize ur gol firing rate to maxiumize ur dmg out put while making mutas move and slow their firing rate, this will also get ur troops closer to ur own reinenforcements, now u know y the t keeps walk back a tiny bit and then hold right away and fire, this will disrupt muta firing but not gol, as gol on hold position can fire faster than muta, they response to hold better
hmm i think its cos the gol ai respond faster (like goons) if u press hold instead of attack-to, also u can see that not ALL gols r firing on the same target so it cant be a move-focus-attack either
continue: therefore, as more upgrades comes in the game the more evident that muta > gols, another reason is that muta is air units therefore they can stack and concentrate fire much better than gols, lastly each muta shots glaves which bounces twice after initial hit and deals 9,3,1 dmg respective(with no upgrade) a total of 13 dmg while each gol shots 2 * 10 explosive dmg to muta which does 10 dmg (thats if muta has no armour upgrade), the only thing gol has is faster firing rate,5 more hp and
ok i will explain this 4 nubs: first of all muta > gol, heres y: muta is small unit, gol does explosive dmg (50% dmg to small units), also gol actually do 2 * 10 explosive dmg not straight up 20 explosive dmg, what does that mean overall? it means that 1 armour up for muta will be twice as effective vs gol dmg as explosive only do 50% vs small unit AND gols attack is 2*10 not 20 so the dmg will get deducted twice, so 1 armour up for muta will reduce gols dmg by 4
goliaths explosive air attack = 50% dmg to small size units, including mutas.. yea some zerglings and boxer pwnd, goliahts used to attack mutas instead of lings;.
If it were anyone BUT BoxeR microing those Gols, the Mutas would've won due to the fact that they're small and take half damage from Gols.
Unfortunately, BoxeR has proven time and time again that his gosu micro completely rewrites Starcraft strategy in something known as the "BoxeR-factor."
