This great song was written about a Landlord who Continually Gave free Beer to the Poor and Needy In his Village.

He was asked by the Local Police to Stop his Kindness because the Excess beer was causing a Crimewave.

The local People had Unwittingly become Alcoholics and Needed to feed their Need so they Broke Into the Landlords Tavern and Stole his Beer.

On one Occasion desperation Forced the Police to Lock Up the Landlord and he was heard Crying" Why do you Hate me I Gave You Ale"

Ok, maybe they have absolutely nothing in common with Coldplay except for where they're from."

There is a vocal similarity. Maybe Coldplay have done so well because they've tapped into a desire for music that is vulnerable, melodic, and even anthemic. They've provided this in a shiny, easily marketable way. Whereas M&S go straight for the heart of whatever they're trying to say and are happy if anyone is able to come along with them.

In a way Coldplay has made it easier for bands like M&S to get a chance at proper distribution.

But yeah, both singers have lovely expressive voices.
