Slope the gravel or build a shelf so the water depth varies from 2 inches to maybe 6 or 8 inches. Generally, fish and snappers don't mix. Don't put anything else in the tank that you don't want to get eaten. You could use generic aquarium gravel or small stones from where you caught the turtle. You can get fish from anywhere; bait stores are generally more prone to have diseased or sick fish, and the fish may be cold-water species that won't survive 5 minutes in the turtle's tank.
Siphon vacuum clean the gravel once a week, removing 50% - 75% of the water and replace with temperature-matched, dechlorinated, aged water. Do not use bleach or any other cleaners at all. Don't even use tapwater. Do not trip his nails. Snappers use their claws to shred their food, and should wear them down naturally on the gravel. When it gets more than a few inches long, it may very well attack you if you put your hands in it's water. Pick him up with your hands on his sides, thumbs on top,
fingers on bottom shell. Try to stay out of the way of his head and feet. I put mine in a big bucket now while I clean his tank. I have to keep an eye on him though, since he has been able to climb far enough up the inside of the bucket to tip it over and make a break for it!
Sheesh. Everything I've learned in years of turtle-keeping summed up in 3 YouTube comments. I hope this helps.
@mouserusker How do I siphon vacuum the gravel? is it ok to just get a bit of stream water from a small stream beside my house? its VERY small stream and how do I go about switching the water?
Thanks! Luckily, I can find crayfish in the wild less than a mile from my house all year long. It's a good thing, too, since Bowser is an outright eating machine. I couldn't afford to keep him if I had to buy his food...
I have a snapping turtle too, but its an alligator snapping turtle about 5 inches shell to nose. I got him from the turtle man (John Richards) the owner of the loggerhead acre farm in Southern Louisiana.
Unlike the common snapping turtle, Coruku, my alligator snapping turtle, is much more shy, and picky when it comes to food. He tend to switch his eating habits if he feels like it. He loves to eat fish, but never chases them like a common snapping turtle. Coruku just opens his mouth, twitching that worm like tongue to lure guppies, and rose red minnows i bought from my local pet shop.
Coruku's real attitude shows up when the full spectrum light is turned off. He is more active at night hunting small crayfish that i also bought from my local pet shop. I got him for almost 2 years now, and he tend to grow much slower than the common snapping turtle.
He eats whenever and whatever I feed him. I've found his growth to be directly proportional to the amount of food he eats. I usually feed him freeze-dried krill and some kind of commercially available "carnivorous/omnivorous turtle pellets". I feed an amount roughly one and a half to two times the volume of the turtle's skull. The bass and gobies get a good deal of this food, though. He'll also eat worms, bugs, ground beef, vegetables, mice, frogs, live plants, plastic plants, etc.
I'm pretty sure that it was a sunfish. It's sorta hard to tell, since I think the native wild sunfish and bluegill in my area are capable of interbreeding.
=o mines about 2-3 1/2 mouths now i'm about to get about a 40gallon tank. i'm going to but some minnows in there and maybe 1-3 of those small frogs you find at walmart in a cup. And if i can find a few very small crayfish i'll but 1-2 in there. i'm going to make a video of my new tank when it's done. and someone said play sand is OK to put on the bottem of the tank =\ is that true? i useing mud at the moment but gets too dirty to easy thanks.
I've also heard that play sand is okay, but i usually refrain from putting anything in my tank that wasn't designed specifically for aquarium use. The regular aquarium gravel you can find at WalMart is what I have in all 6 of my tanks.
Also, those "small frogs" are African Clawed frogs, and will get quite large (although not too large for a hungry snapper... see my other vids)
i like turtles

@mouserusker how much do those turtles cost
XxsmigglyxX 6 months ago
@XxsmigglyxX You can't buy them. It is illegal to keep one as a pet. If you want one, you'll have to catch it yourself.

Crayfish are jam packed full of calcium for natural shell growth, nice job on the turtle mouserusker. :-)
