  • well i know this song and it works with a bunch of young people..this is lovely..and.. a few years later ended up in his PROM in london 2010

  • Thank you. I can't tell you how much this particular song means to someone like me.

  • If you look closely at time-stamp 3:54, you see the conductor in profile. I'm almost certain that this is Paul Gemignani, who has been Sondheim's go-to conductor for over 30 years. I don't think he'd do an arrangement that Sondheim hadn't approved. It's a stirring number and sticks closely in spirit to the original version. I'm glad all these kids had the opportunity to participate. Where was this performance?

  • @BrooklynJNL Hollywood bowl

  • I was in the choir here too! Where were you?

  • OH My God- What was the director thinking. This is not a chorus number!!! If Sondheim had wanted a big group to sing this number he would have written it that way. I hate it when people stuff around with arrangements. It's like For Good from Wicked being sung by a group.... It's just not meant to be

  • Oh but... Sondheim was in the audience on that day from what i could remember years ago... he enjoyed it

  • @cortiz2092000 you're right, he was totally there! i sang in the choir too... i was on the far right, and he was standing offstage, stage right... crying the whole time.

    :)

  • Actually dude or dudette, it's meant to be sung by the Highscool choir of the graduating class. So technically, it is meant to be.

  • Wonderful! How great for you to be a part of it! I think this is one of the best songs of American theater!! Cheers!
