  • Ann Marie Gaston book on Bharata Natyam in the Temples is very well written and covers a lot about Lord Nataraja. I had the chance to meet with her in Madras when she visited guriji.

  • Yes, she is Canadian. Her book is called: Bharata Natyam - From Temple to Theatre. Excellent book.

  • I saw a review of this book in Chennai/Madras's music magazine 'Sruthi'. The article writer went to great pains to pount out what he considered inaccuracies in it. I thought it was a pathetic attempt to ridicule her.

I just found a clip of her performing Odissi from Brit tv around the mid 80s & will post it tomorrow.

  • Some Indians can't stand it when some 'whitey' knows more than them on their 'own' arts.

  • I look forward to that. Thanks for uploading all these amazing videos! There are some real gems.

  • I have the book and admire the work that has gone into it. Nick can you point me to that article in Sruthi? I am curious.

  • It's hidden away at the moment as it's a few years old. You could always email Sruthi mag & ask them about it. I'll see if I can find it too.

  • ok then

  • She IS Canadian, I believe & has studied with so many greats in the 60s in India. She brought a book out called something like 'From Temple To Stage'. I'll get the correct title & post it here.

  • Oh! Very cool, she is a westerner that learned Bharatanatyam right? I think she's from Canada or France.
