you've got your styles and your history mixed up man. first, what you call "free jazz" has been around since the 30's, and your "old big band jazz" is still played today. second, people general don't play 4 on the floor for anything. they haven't since the bass amp was invented. last, even what you're doing isn't "modern jazz". you're just sort of incorporating rock stuff into jazz. this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you have to be able to distinguish between the two. good technique though.
