@CocktailPartyTime the definition retard is the opposite of acceleration. When sometings gets retard it is pulled back, just like you do when flaring and setting throttle to idle. So, it is a combination, not only just idle.
Hey, the engineers at airbus should put some more... er... better than this odd RETARD RETARD RETARD... something like... MON AMIE, TU EST ARRIVË FINALEMENT or ES QUE VOUS VOULEZ AN CAFE AU LAIT?
All newer airbus planes do this A380 and newer Retard in french means slow down/slow or decrease so this is just the plane telling you that this is the point where you should set the throttle to idle and let the plane hit the ground.
@vppicard ah ok... thanks for the answer, didn't watch it close enough. but I thought normally the person who has throttle control also engages the reversers on the ground (?) maybe he forgot it here, so the person on the right seat had to help
@madflyer1093 Don't speak towards the entire American Nationality due to one citizen who was unaware of what the word "Retard" means in terms of aviation...
@zandrewss1 I think you're referring to the italian word, Ritardando, meaning gradually slower. However, the callout used by Airbus is definately 'Retard' - from the French word 'retarder', meaning to hold back or slow down. Both are derived from the latin 'retardare' but as Airbus Industrie are based in France, I think it's most likely they would be using the French derivative.
when i saw the retard comments, first thing i thought was:
when i scroll down, there are 200 comments explaining why the autopilot says retard.
I scrolled down and what did i see, 200 comments explaining why the autpilot says retard and what it means... we're just having fun and tell jokes about it, don't be so damn serious =]
@gangstahero1770 The 320 sim at our training centre simulates a hole ( damage on the airframe) for depressurization drills... lots f noise accompanied by a banging sound n then loss of cabin pressure. but the party piece is the smoke one. the whole sim fills up with smoke in case of avionics smoke.
there is a difference between retard and reverse thrust!!! they retarded that is reduced the throttle . reverse thrusters can only be engaged after touch down.
@WISEBL00D Qantas is one of the best airlines there is, and it's the oldest, most experienced one on the planet. Aussie Qantas pilots are among the best pilots in the world, and they are by no means the least traveled. Until recently, Qantas had a safety record without a single incident, after some 85 years of service. Yes, lately a few things have gone wrong, but I'd pin it on the offshore maintenance (moved to Malaysia in 2005). Nobody was hurt in any of those incidents, thanks to our pilots.
@MaguireWard Boeing aircraft do not have the retard call outs because Boeing throttle systems actually move when the auto throttle system is in-gauged. As the pilot is landing his hands will be resting on the throttles so even if he were to forget to pull back the throttles the plane will do it. Since Airbus aircraft to not have a moving throttle system when in auto throttle mode the "retard, retard" is to remind the pilot that he is at 20ft and needs to retard the throttles. hope this helps.
@MaguireWard Its an autothrottle callout during flare to retard the thrust levers. It is a reminder to reduce power to idle so that the aircraft can settle onto the runway. It is also a reminder because if the pilot were to be doing a manual landing with auto throttles on as the aircraft gets to about 20ft unless the pilot retards the throttles the auto throttles will automatically increase power causing the plane not to land.
@HDviation VREF with Flaps/slats at full is 135-140 Knots Indicated air speed. Even though the A380 is larger then the 747-400, its Vref is lower. This is due to the aircrafts high aspect ratio. I love the A380 :)
@AJsfree2toke its french to "slow down". Its an aural message to remind the pilots to move the throttle quadrant back to idle position. It will keep saying retard until they do though it is funny :D
@sy2015 RETARD means bring the thrust levers to idle, not into reverse. it's said right in the flare to settle the aircraft on the ground. after that, then the reversers are deployed
I forget how these things are soo real. Love how it shakes when the rear and nose wheels land. and the cars moving on qantas drive. Really good. Are you a pilot yourself or you managed to get into Qantas top secret flight training facility. I managed to get there once but couldnt go in. I didnt have "enough" clearance.
That was a "ehh...I don't know..." kinda touchdown even to Microsoft Flight Simulator standards...why? because it's about 1 to 2 seconds premature. Good thing and GOOD reason why the flying pilot is in a 380 SIMULATOR.
I noticed at 1:19 the primary flight display changes to a tail cam view. Is this just part of the sim or is this feature actually part of the A380? Outside of cost I've always wondered why modern airliners don't use more outside cams ie 360 degree tail cam, belly cam etc. Could be a handy tool for pilots both in the air and on the ground. Cool simulator!
It's a real feature, used on the real aircraft after landing and under a certain speed. There are markings indicating where the main wheels are under the wings to avoid going off the taxiway especially during turns.
With the fly-by-wire technology, it makes it very simple. One of the test pilots who first flew the 380 remarked that it was like driving a bicycle...and very smooth. Things have changed from the days when aircraft climbed like rocks :P
@Intelpentium54321 Actually it's quite easy if u auto landing... in an auto land the only thing the pilot does is pull back the throttle to idle what the computer says: RETARD RETARD :p
Then they pull it back one more notch for reverse thrust.

The word "retard" is a reminder to pilots to bring the thrust levers to idle during the landing maneuver, known as the "flare," just prior to touchdown. If the autothrottles are engaged, which they are most of the time on highly-automated aircraft such as the Airbus, the thrust will go to idle on its own just prior to touchdown on landing.
