  • yawn boring. all of them superhero comics.

  • What a surprise watchmen #1

  • Comics = graphic novels. Great video though.

  • I can imagine a lot of twists.

  • i read a graphic novel where it starts with a black guy and he is playing some super hero computer game then he and his frineds go on a mission there is a vampire in the middle of the comic and then in the end the black guy betrays them but he gets killed by these godlike creatures there were flame gloves some staff and some goggles the black guy takes in the end if anyone knows the name of this one please tell me its driving me crazy

  • whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 8 rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 7rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

  • Han shot first!

  • i think sin city (all of them) are the best graphic novels.. they beat moores work by a mile.

  • @joker9494949494 you so silly

  • Eisner's New york- nice choice! I never hear people talk about this one for some reason. I like your presentation.

  • A very populist list you've got there, good to see you've got Watchmen, Mause and Sandman in there. Very hard to create a top ten though, what do you base it on? Sales, artistic merit, Scholarly endevour or all of the above. From Hell would have been my choice for #1 as its Scholarly and literary merit have done a lot to justify the very term graphic novel, in contrast as an example of a monumental achievement for one man, Akira is well worth a read. The storys enticing and the art, amazing!

  • SCOTT PILGRIM!!

  • you obviously dont understand the marvel universe. Civil War is awful. every cahracter doesn't act how they would. Captain America stands for democracy ,yet when democracy doesnt go his way he fights agianst what the character stands for.

  • whats #10?!

  • SERIOUSLY, why wasn`t V for Vendetta mentioned? It`s better then half the novels in this video.

  • scott pilgrim???????

  • @Ajwmsaguitarman Scott Pilgrim doesn`t deserve to be mentioned with works like V for Vendetta and Watchmen. They have nowhere NEAR the quality, story, and emotion that most graphic novels mentioned in this video have.

  • Also, once you read Alan Moores other work, you realize what a hack he is: Normal comic book + sex crimes that scream "this ain't kid stuff!" = literature?

  • @CaptainAntlers A hack!Someone who's produced such gems as From hell(his best),the league of extraordinary gentlemen,V for vendetta,Top 10,miracleman,whatever happened to the man of tommorrow, the killing joke, swampthing & watchmen, which is an incredible piece of work, the way he has police reports, biography extracts & the black frieghter story seemlessly built into the overall story with the style he & 'Gibbons does is amazing & not the work of a hack. You can't deny his talent, regardless of taste

  • When this guy says "Watchmen by Alan Moore is one of the greatest novels ever written" I want to punch him in the face. No it isn't. It's an alright novel, sure. It's up to the level of some modern literature like DeLillo but that's more because modern literature sucks than because it's great. It's a decent story but the only reason people say it's great is because other people say it's great and they're bandwagoning. If not for the reputation, you wouldn't think twice after reading it.

  • WHO CARES WHAT THEY ARE CALLED!!! HOLY SHIT IT IS SO UNSETTLING TO SEE THAT PEOPLE FIND THE NEED TO ARGUE ABOUT THE MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS! IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THEY ARE CALLED! JUST READ THEM!!!!

  • the sandman is one of the greatest things i've ever read

  • what about jodorozky and much others asian comics books, dude USA and UK are not the world

  • This is an interesting video, and a good selection, but MY GOD why is the speech so slow??

  • Watchmen is so overrated. It was originally supposed to be six issues, not 12--it shows. At first the character profiles are nice, but after the first couple issues they slow the story down to a crawl and become padding. I think Freud himself would laugh at how Moore is convinced that everyone's personality boils down to some sort of sexual experience.

  • what was 10???

  • @alhex123 Identity Crisis.

  • Uh oh, someone who doesn't know how to pronounce mise en scene.

  • I dont see the attraction with Ghost World.

  • fantastic video :P

  • Ozymandias was right.

  • The killing joke, the long halloween, hush are some good ones but dude most graphic novel's are comic's even the watch men was released in like 12 or 13 issue's

  • @youngboyp all "graphic novels" are comics dude, its just fancy wording

  • i just read y: the last man checked on wiki to see how it would be categorised and found out its called a Comic? wtf! i thought it would be a so called GN cos of the maturity and depth, then i found out its been classified as a comic simply because its a series which spans multiple volumes thats bullshit! they're comic books! comics use words and pictures novels use JUST words.

  • @knightking1360 not this again, graphic novel is basically fancy talk for comic

  • @polkafrenzy666 i know that. i despise the word graphic novel.

  • why do people insist on calling COMIC BOOKS, graphic novels? they're fucking comic books! what happened?

  • no joe sacco work.

come on you have spielman and eisner but no sacco.

that a complit other kind of comic

  • Dark knight returns and watchmen are my two absolute fvs. WHoo

  • It is a good commentary but it made a common slip to dark in an attempt to be serious Pekar, Eisner, Ghostworld though good insight with the projected self-loathing, Maus. I highly recommend the novels in pictures by Eric Drooker, if people haven't seen them yet. He illustrated a book for Ginsberg regular covers for New Yorker. Oft an ending sense of redemption and I'm prejudiced against superhero's.

  • Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

    Who watches the watchmen?

Ozymandias is a hero and you know it.

  • I wish I had never read WATCHMEN so that I could read it for the first time all over again

  • @RageOfTheKage is watchmen really that good? idk if i should read it or not

  • @chadvonswan

    It is God Like!

    hahaha

You really need to read it!!!

    More than any other!

  • @chadvonswan

dude, its soooo sooo soooooo good, i mean really, its fantastic, tops... i loved it

  • yes u can civil war is one book now

  • How can you do a top ten without including Grant Morrison? Two words... Animal Man.

  • Pretty good list!! In my top ten I would definetly have mage: hero dicovered!!

  • Funny how most of these are just collected comics into book format. Showing how meaningless the "Graphic novel" monicer is.

  • hey if u read from hell tell me if it is any good thanks

  • civil war was awesome

  • can you get civil war in one book ?

  • can someone have a graphic novel list without putting everyone loves especially except when people put it on their no.1 spot of grpahic novels its not very surprising

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent list! I love it! Although, I think bone by jeff smith should be in here. When you join an excellent cartoonist with a fantastic colorist, it's just amazing. I also like how it goes from a comedy to a dark comedy throughout the series.

  • WATCHMEN ALL THE WAY!!!!

  • my top 5 no real order

    neverwhere

    sandman

    hellblazer

    preacher

    sin city

    taller tales

    lucifer

    i am legend

  • I know these graphic novels are great but you should read adult manga too.

I reccomend this one´s to check out:

    1.Berserk

    2.Ichi the killer

    3.Gantz

    4.Oldboy

    2.Homunculus

Japanese manga really are better in quality stories, yo should check it out.

  • check out "The Boys" its sick

  • Hi I'm nearly 14 and i haven't been interested in comics until now. Can you tell me what the best comic to get started for my age would be???

    cheers

  • If you're a batman fan, try reading The Killing Joke. It may not be that suitable for Your age though, but its short but sweet (due to adult situations)

  • Hi Is there any order you should read the batman comics??

    Cheers

  • not really. Try reading, "Year One" it should start you off and then "The Man Who Laughs" and then "The Killing Joke"

  • watchmen. im 13 (14 in a week) and it is my favorite book. then again i read books that other 13 year olds dont. (Ex: 1984)

  • Sorry, the title is "Micropolis: Moher dreams" and the authors are Wojda and Gawronkiewicz. That was a mistake.

  • My Top Ten: 10. Moebius "The Edena world" 9. Miller "Ronin" 8. Miller "Dark Knight returns" 7. Andersson "Pixy" 6. Ranta "Rain" 5. Jodorovsky/Boucq "Bouncer" 4. Micropolis "Moher dreams" 3. Thompson "Blankets" 2. Moore/Gibbons "Watchmen" 1. Burns "Black hole" + "Maus", "New York", "Berlin. City of stones.", "V for vendetta". About the movie: I don't agree with the author. I think the "Civil war" is not so good.
  • Civil War was not good..i agree

  • personally, i always find watchmen overestimated, but it's a great one, not the greatest one, it's a question of point of view about the 1 one i dont beleave at a best one

  • very nice :]

  • what ?!!....no preacher..no v for Vendetta?....you bloody heretic

  • That's the fakest accent I've ever heard.

  • What about The Crow, 300, V for Vendetta, and The Killing Joke?

  • The Killing Joke Rocks, so does 300, I havn't read the crow yet or V for Vendetta.

  • I deffinately recommend it.

  • the crow? is there a tpb? what's the name of it? just the crow?

  • @TheAdequateFilmmaker the killing joke is not so good

  • capt. america dies in civil war.

  • I was expecting to see Persepolis too, but anyway nice top ten

  • Y CONDORITO?

  • jajajajajaja

    tenés razon

  • I was suprise to not see the Death Of Superman.

  • fantastic vid!!! my freinds and i r considering working on a graphic novel just for fun of course. i know it will never match any of these great works, but if any one finds it interesting please let me kno and ill tell u about the story.

  • reminds me of a nerdy austin powers

  • you forgot about V for Vendetta....

  • The dark knight returns at #6?????

  • it's like reading rainbow, for nerds....

  • I kinda figured Watchmen would be #1. I just finished it myself, great story.

  • so did i just a few days ago it was really good

  • Most of the Batman ones, like Hush and such are good reads. I hope to check out the comics about the Earthquake sometime. Also, is Sandman any good?

  • I was never much for graphic novels.. but i just finished my first 2 graphic novels ever at the ripe old age of 20... V for Vendetta and Watchman... I enjoyed Watchmen more than V but both were awesome. If anyone has any suggestions for the next one, i'd appreciate it.

  • Maus

  • Read the Dark knight returns, or Ronin, just to name a few by Frank Miller

  • Identity Crisis is gross story using my beloved characters from DC, twisting their well acquired personalities in order to give a roster of colorful characters to a pretty dull writer. It's really gross, and unbearable. I would retcon comic history and disintegrate anything remotely related with that aberration.

  • Oh, and I found Identity Crisis to be pretty lackluster.

  • Notable omissions include Epileptic, Blankets, Fun Home, Black Hole, Berlin, Jimmy Corrigan, Love and Rockets, Persepolis and Blue Pills.

  • my top ten graphic novles. 1.watchmen- alan moore 2.batman year 1- frank miller 3.batman the killing joke- alan moore 4.the dark knight returns- frank miller 5.from hell - alan moore 6.lost girls- alna moore. 7.The League of Etraordinery Gentlemen - alan moore 8.swamp thing - alan moore 9.v for vendata- alan moore 10. the dark knight strikes again - frank miller
  • I have a few disagreements with your list (I thought Identity Crisis AND Civil War sucked), but the rest is well chosen and shows that you have a certain knowledge about the difference between comic books and graphic novels (with the exception of IC and CW ;))

  • Top Ten Graphic Novels: 1. Watchmen 2. Kingdom come 3. Batman Year One 4. The Dark Knight Returns 5. The Long Halloween 6. Weapon X 7. The League of Etraordinery Gentlemen 8. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? 9. Uncle Sam by Alex Ross 10. Wolverine Origins
  • Top Ten Graphic Novels: 1. Watchmen 2. Sin City 3. X-Men:God loves, Man Kills. 4. The Dark Knight Returns 5. Death of Captain Marvel 6. Kingdome Come 7. Hellboy: The Right Hand of Doom 8. The Goon:Chinatown 9. Teenagers from Mars 10. Identity Crisis
  • I love anything by Harvey Pekar. I felt that The Dark Knight Returns was slightly overrated. There were some interesting concepts and ideas in it, but overall lackluster. I totally agree with you on Watchmen. It is quite possibly the most ibteresting thing I have ever had the pleasure of reading. There's nothing else quite like it.

  • Excllent list. I agree with most of the choices, even if I might quibble on the order slightly.

Also, I'd like to throw 'Red Son' in for consideration. And 'Kingdom Come' might deserve a mention.

But, you really can't go wrong with any of your picks.

(Nice work on recognizing 'Maus' at #2.)

  • top ten graphic novels 1.Ed the happy clown -Chester Brown 2.Marvels - Kurt Busuik and Alex Ross 3.Barefoot Gen - Kieji Nakazawa 4.The Enigma - Peter Milligan and Duncan Fregredo 5.Fires - Lorenzo Mattoti 6.Violent Cases - Neil Gaiman and Dave Mckean 7.Batman Year One - Frank miller and David Mazzucchelli 8.Watchmen - Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons 9.Ghost World - Daniel Clowes 10.Domu - Katsuhiro Otomo
  • Can't agree with the awesome Sin City being over the masterpiece Dark Knight Returns. Still an interesting list.

Oh and, number 1 is the most obvious one.

I think Maus is just supposed to be pronounced just like mouse.

  • i think everybody votes that watchmen is the best!

  • you have to be stupid not to

  • The way I see it is; I call a compilation of comic books, graphic novels. And the singular comics are not graphic novels, just comic books.

  • Eisner first started calling them graphic novels because he knew that no publisher at the time would print mature content comic books.

  • I agree with this statement, unfortunately I can't give it the thumbs up because youtube won't let me.

  • A bunch of these look like rip offs of Watchmen.

  • That's why I wouldn't have included "Identity Crisis" nor "Civil War" on a Top Ten list. "Kingdom Come" either for that matter. They were obviously inspired by (read:ripoffs of)"Watchmen." Some readers could say the same thing about "The Dark Knight Returns," but even Alan Moore liked that book so it could be viewed as an emulation rather than an imitation.

  • Frank Miller's Dark Knight is still one of my all time favourite graphic novels, and still holds it's own against any of the new wave of graphic storytelling :)

  • ive never read a graphic novel but watchmen movie looks awsome so i just bought the book

  • you should definetely read it first

  • capt america didn't die in civil war, he dided after civil war (they call it an epilog but it wasn't in civil war it was in the capt. america title so he didn't die in civil war)

  • I thought Civil War was a great story I agree the ending sucked but c'mon the story was still great

  • i would remove both identity crisis and civil war and replace them with stray bullets, cerebus and marvels...i know thats 3, but i was never good at math

  • civil war is listed? why not kingdom come instead

  • civil war wasn't that great

  • I'm just curious but do you feel that Toriyama's Dragon Ball saga had pretty much run it's course when Toriyama decided to quit?

Wasn't it the case that when Dragon Ball became such a worldwide phenomenon thanks in part to the Dragon Ball Z anime

    on Cartoon Network

that Viz decided to make Goku a kid again even though Toriyama wanted to end the storyline

    and Toriyama basically said "ENOUGH!"

and quit the Dragon Ball manga for good?

  • I'm no expert on this because I really never got around to reading the Dragon Ball manga although I watched the Dragon Ball Z

anime constantly and even a little bit of Dragon Ball although they were both dubbed into english for Cartoon Network and were probably edited with an axe,

Probably the anime never measured up to Toriyama's original Manga which is often the case with Manga vs anime,

Especially when the anime is edited for American Television.

  • Sure thing, I appreciate your feedback.

  • Watchmen is essential no question

From Hell is British however does that count?

As for work outside the USA

Sure there's room for Corto Maltese, Astrex,

Tardi's work, Moebius, Tezuka's Budda and countless others on any list of all time masters but this was for a top ten list,

In any case lists like this are subjective.

  • iam glad maus got number 2

  • 1.A Contract With God

    2.Krazy Kat

3.Jimmy Corrigan The Smartest Kid On Earth

    4.Maus

    5.Watchmen

    6.Plastic Man by Cole

7.The Fantastic Four by Lee & Kirby

    8.The Spirit

9.Donald Duck & Uncle Scrooge by Carl Barks

    10.From Hell

  • WATCHMEN is the ESSENTIAL graphic novel. It was like the Second Coming for comics. Nowhere else does it belong but in FIRST PLACE on this list.

  • sin city is a bit overrated, but it IS good. If you ask me, I think Will Eisner's A Contract WIth God is the best graphic novel, with Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan and Watchmen tied for number 2. Also, I disagree with Civil War and Identity Crisis being in the top 10, or even a top 50.

All opinion though!! I still respect everyone else's =)

  • wow i knew it your number 1 would be watchmen i love that book i ve read it multiple times but i hope the movie does with out all of dr.manhatten if you know what i mean

  • sin city is a little bit overrated, imo. it got some beautiful art, but is not frank millers best work.

  • The dark knight returns is an under rated novel. Nice pick!

  • A nice list with some titles I'll definately be checking out.

I'm surprised 'Judgement on Gotham' wasn't there though. It's a superb crossover of Judge Dredd and Batman with brilliant art by Simon Bisley. It's certainly in my top 3.

  • "Maus" is pronouced just like "mouse".

  • I would replace Ghost World with Blankets by Craig Thompson

  • ghost world was made into a movie

  • Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross is missing, much like watchmen but with real superheros of the DCU and the most breath taking art in comics.

  • ****** stars!

    ((($2)))

  • Ten out of ten

  • Check out LITERATURELIBRARY dot NET

  • Good effort, but this list is crying out for Marvels.

  • Nice - no arguments with the selections here Sir

  • Batman comixs are the sweetest

  • ditto that.
