I think he means the term punk, which they used to use in the 50's to describe rowdy teenagers, but yeah I guess it's a genre of music too, but it would most likely be called punk rock instead of just punk
They changed their music, what they create and put their name on, for the money. That is the definition of selling out. Punk is music where money and popularity are no objects and the musicians create whatever they want. If they get a dime here and there, cool, it's just a byproduct. But now, it's money first, and if it sounds okay, that's cool too. That is the definition of selling out right there. And that's exactly what they did.
Where did you get that sales and money come first for them?
Jade has said a couple times in interviews that if your just selling albums to see how many you can sell or make tons of money & not for enjoyment of making music, thats not a good reason to be creating music. Why is it such a bad thing there popular now & make different sounding music that sounds very deep? They got bored, and sure some people would've liked the same music, but it would've have gotten boring to them and the fans.
im right there with ya. they still made really good music (im not talking about DU) but i liked their older sound a lot better. and somewhere in an interview davey said that he wanted to mature their music.
Yeah I think it's fine to prefer their older stuff, I'm starting to like it more myself, mostly AOD & VPOY. What bugs me sometimes is when people will disrespect and call them 'sell outs' or emo. There in like their 30's now, they were doing this punk stuff when they were late teens.
would have gotten boring to the fans? who are you to say that.. how can you really know that? and obvioulsy it hasnt gotten but so boring being that there are tons of fans such as myself that listen to this music often and still enjoy it.. is that boredom..? dont think so...
Hey, I still really enjoy this type of music too. VPOY is my favorite of the first 3. Theres nothing wrong with enjoying it.
And I was mostly quoting what other fans and the band have said about making the same type of music. I didn't say all fans would get bored with it. I said some fans would be really happy to have the same music made...But from what I've read, lots of fans wouldn't.
i agree with everything you said except it didn't necessarily "get boring" they just grew up they were kids when they made this then they became adults
EXACTLY, davey has said many times that they play what they WANT to play, and you'll notice the transition between the first four albums, small but significant transitions and its becauce they dont want to do the same thing, dont get me wrong the new shit like crash love seems to be 100 commercial and its annoying but AFI says thats what they like you cant blame them, thbesides, if they stayed hardcore but didnt want to play, they'd eventually get lazy and you fans would diss them for that too
Pointless comment. As if any band who sold out would admit it. The fans have every right to complain because without them, AFI wouldn't exist. Now does that mean the band should play what the original fans want? No. But if you're a real music fan, you don't want a band to keep changing because it usually means one thing: desperation.
They wanted to be popular so they sold out. Now they have to keep changing because mainstream media doesn't wait around. What hairstyles will they have next?
@HoosierMF They changed because they evolved , as I've mentioned many times before , they learnt to actually play , getting stuck in a punk genre might somewhat seem hardcore and underground , but musically it sucks. I like punk too , but lets face it it's too repetitive . They never sold out . They never will. I still don't see them on a Hot-dog stand or driving Hammer.
@BlindMkd I agree, I mean, besides they kept changing, if they simply wanted popularity they would stay stuck in the STS era when they first gain mainstream status, but ehy changed twice after that in many different ways.
Would I like to hear AFI revert perhaps, sure i would but we know thats not going to happen, at least they play alot of their old stuff live though
@LighteningTheif9 It's very obvious that they decided to change so I it wasn't a natural progression. I'd respect them if they said "we don't like playing hardcore any more" but they didn't. I think they disrespected their older fans by saying that they are "more mature now". Hardcore is about honesty and real life. What's immature about that?
@HoosierMF Actually, they have said they don't like playing hardcore anymore. They've said various times they are no longer a punk band and will make music that THEY want to make. I'm guessing they just didn't want to be a punk band anymore.
@HoosierMF Maybe for a more balanced set list or something between old and new songs? I'm not sure. I think it's been said that Jade, Adam, and Hunter like playing the old stuff sometimes, but that Davey just doesn't want to or can't sing the old stuff anymore. If they were still creating punk music, and playing punk music at every show for almost 20 years, who knows how Davey's voice could handle that. I'm really tired of this argument that's been going on for like a year, can we just drop it?
@LighteningTheif9 See, I don't know how you can say that when there are so many punk and hardcore vocalists that do exactly that year after year.
AFI can do what they want - I'm not going to see them or buy their music any more. However this whole idea that their punk songs were immature and now they're "grown up" is really offensive to me.
@HoosierMF Good for you, you can like just the old stuff, while I can like new and old. Everyone likes different things.
And I didn't say the punk songs were immature, I love the old stuff just as much as the new stuff. I guess they just lost interest in playing punk music, who knows. I'm done.

I don't think they sold out, they grew up and got bored of punk, eventually if a band is around for 18 years, there gonna change.

punk is not a genre, it is an attitude and if they got bored of punk, then they are sell outs
Orangerad2 2 years ago
Punk is a subgenre of rock. It has its own style that is different than other subgenres.

What an idiotic comment. You obviously know nothing about music if that's what you think about punk. Do you even know what hardcore is?
