For my semester 2 project we were only given 2 weeks to design an apartment building. The rest of the semester has been figuring out how the building works, drawing details, making contracts and so on. Before I started my degree I did english literature, 'A' maths, physics, chemistry and technical drawing and the vast majority of that has been helpful. What I've found so far is that you need a broad background of knowledge, a passion for learning and the ability to work really well in a team.
@Typho0n86 yes u can! tat's the whole thing doug has been talking bout in this video. creativity is being relish as u solve problems in ur own creative way! or at least thats wat i think ;)
@howtoarchitect Hi, Im just want to ask, Can you make 3D Models like useing google sketch up? And use that, Im a good at drawing but Im REALLY good at 3D Modeling :P
Hi, I study architecture in Peru, and sometimes I feel like my partners are more creative than me and that makes me feel that I'm not good enough with architecture. Eventhough watching this video made me realize that creativity is not the only thing that matters in this carreer. Congratulations, your videos are very interesting : )
Hi. I asked my Physics teacher the other day if I would need "Advanced maths" to get into architecture. (We have "Advanced maths", and "normal maths" in our school) Do I really need advanced maths?
wo0wiee!!..thx for those vidz doug..see i used to wonder wether to pick architecture as my course and wether or not it's the right choice for me to do so coz in 2 yrz i'm gunna go 2 college and i'm so psyched..thx for those very informativvee and helpful vids..
FIX the magical column that appeared in the middle of the bedroom after the structural calculations and redraw all the sheets bcz this detail its in every one of them...really hate when that happens
This videos are absolutely great !! there just what i needed because i had a very big dilemma if i would become an architect or not. this videos helped me a lot.. thanks for making them.
watching this kinda made me scared ahaha, since i am considering architecture and im in my last highschool year, but i hope it all goes well, thanks for the insight! helped alot!
but for me,from solving the problem comes creativity because we are trying to invent a new way to solve the problem efficiently.A good architect is good with both;creativity and problem solving.
@davidhalifax what you said is the summary of all the residential architecture decadence. and i must admit you are so right! building speculation. so sad.
everyone answer this ....for a head start in architecture wht is a better education college or university? cuz college = technical and university = theoretical
i wanted to become an architect when i was in grade 4. My structures i drew were 2d though. i was able to draw the the empire state building perfectly 3-d.
I get the feeling that this series is essentially saying you have to be good at all of these things... But not necessarily any of them! Still, great videos, enjoying them and learning a lot. :)
Thanks for the comments. You may be interested to hear... We've got some friends in Mexico that are currently translating my 'So you want to be an architect' series for the whole Spanish speaking world! Can't wait! Thanks for the comment and for watching.
it doesn't.. you will have to make a name for yourself just like other businesses. you can't be in it for the money its a job that needs a lot of passion. people who are passionate about what they do will excel in whatever they are doing.Money follows excellent people :)
thank you so much, mr. patt :) really, all of your videos are just so inspirational and they totally make me more assured that this is what i want to do. i also feel that i can absolutely succeed in doing it, too.
he sure does like pics of people jumping lol

but the best architects do not follow their business model based on making money. the best designers are not businessmen by nature.
