Is it possible IQ tests are testing people for being good at the tests? In the eugenics days of the 1920s-30s in Indiana in a program studied by Hitler, poor rural people were tested, found to have abysmal IQs and slated them to be sterilized. Of course they were testing on subjects that were utterly foreign to those people. To say that previous generations weren't as good at problem solving is just as nuts. They created the inventions that revolutionized the modern world.
Stephen Colbert could host a US version. Also John H (I can't recall his name - the PC guy in the commercials) loves the show and is brilliant. Lewis Black, David Cross. Comedians get a rap for being silly, but most of them are extremely intelligent.
I wish the US would import shows like this, instead of Idol or other reality shows of that ilk. This show, as with Mock the Week and Have I Got News for You, teaches while being funny, which is a great way to remember a bit of information. I love being able to astonish my friends with the amount of truely random trivia knowledge I possess, and QI keeps on feeding me new little tidbits. Keep it up!
PS...thanks heaps for the uploads! You're totally aces in my book :D
@melliemichelle1 I think there are quite a few people who watch QI here in England who wish that we'd see less of the Big Idol Factor's Got Talent Brother shows and more shows like QI. ;-)
Can we please have an American version of this? I believe the rest of us should be forced to watch intellectual shows like this. Remove reality shows and insert these. All of them! Get ingenious comics as a panel, center them by a very smart person who can pull together jokes themselves to run the damn thing and discuss everything. I will beg for this.
I'm not sure that an American version would work. Who in America has the comic timing and charisma, not to mention the wealth of information he can recall at the drop of a hat, that Stephen does? And be famous enough to pull in an audience from the get go?
@KeladryL True, but I think there's a deeper issue... Something about the panel show format doesn't seem to work anywhere outside of Britain. It's a deep-rooted cultural thing, I suppose. It didn't work in continental Europe, it didn't even work in Australia.
The solution: Every once in a while invite a foreigner to the British QI and just broadcast it globally.
You seem to have let your fanboying silliness to your head, so I'll clear it for you. Stephen is briefed before the show about the subjects he'll be covering and he's given the information to memorize. No, he is not some sort encyclopedia. No, he is not some special figure this show wouldn't work without. Yes, he is a pretty cool guy.
@GSNRecords Of course he's briefed on the subjects before each show, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have an amazing capacity to absorb and understand huge amounts of information. If you see him on other shows, he is so astoundingly intelligent and can talk extensively on unusual subjects. Even on Qi a lot of the information he brings to the table is out of his own head, especially when the group gets off topic! I for one don't think the show would be nearly so good without him.
If St Bernard dogs could talk, they would sound like Stephen Fry's Brian Blessed impression
