  • any soldier who picks up a gun in the service of the nation; or thinking he's being of service (see alex jones), he is a hero. someone that puts their life in danger to save another. it sure as hell makes him a hero in that way, although doing heroic things, alone, does not make one prepared to be president. combined with his experience in politics, i would say he's prepared. if he wasn't an evil fucking bastard, ofcourse

  • i understand your point...but wouldnt yor example be more courageous vs heroic?

I mean has the military mantra to build a volunteer army swayed public perception of a HERO.

Your reference to "Any" Soldier..well that would make the Awhals and deserters "heroes". I'd like to think they were just courageous to sign up but it got to be too much for them and well they left.

"Someone who puts their life in danger to save another" is still courageous until they are successful...Which of the

  • following are "heroes":

A burning building a person stuck on the second floor of the building; two people rush in with the intentions of saving them...a courageous act.

One comes out with the person from the second floor in their arms.

The other person who went in got lost and comes back out.

    Which is the Hero?

They both put their life in danger to save another, right? Yet only one was successful. One was the Hero and one was just courageous.

Or better still the rescued person

  • hmm.. i still believe they're both heroes. one of them didn't succeed but his intentions were heroic. i like this definition of hero:

A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life

  • good definition...interesting discussion though

    thanks

  • You made some great points pertaining to Sen. McCain's status as a POW/war hero/maverick. Funny how nobody (that I've heard of anyway) describes Sen. McCain's time as a POW as a liability. It makes me wonder if he were to be elected president, would he also be a liability? Something to think about. And describing himself as a maverick, someone who stands against his own party, can look more like a saboteur in politics. Looked at that way makes Sen. McCain look sort of schizo. Great video!

  • Jae, I agree with you...being in the military doesn't mean that you are a hero. Take this from someone that is in the military. Yea you may have some leadership skills but that isn't the only thing that defines a leader. It takes more than military experience.
