Woah! I know that history shows plenty of sorrowful cases where, by 1979, EVERYONE who was anyone either felt obligated or WERE forced by their record companies to cough up at least ONE disco track per album. The findings I have made on youtube today are bigger evidence than ever to that fact. I guess, as a stand-alone Disco cut, it's ok. But the fact that a fine southern rock band like Wet Willie were totally ROBBED of any shred of their musical identity to satisfy the Disco frenzy is just SAD!
This song first came out the summer 1979 I was 9 years old at that time I remember this song was playing on one of my local radio of 79 it brings back a lot of memories !
Michael Duke, one of the memebers of Wet Willie, is from my hometown, Thomasville, AL!!! Also, the song Street Corner Seranade is about Thomasville!!! WAY TO GO MIKE!!!
Best description of how you feel when the work week is over! At least while you are young enough!! Oh, I remember those days. Still love the song, gets me moving!!
Love this song! 101.7 in MD and DE still plays it every Fri. 5pm, love hearing it on my drive home. I've heard this my whole life on some station or other at 5pm on Fridays, so I figured it was a huge hit when it came out. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Went to try to buy it on Amazon, they have two or three greatest hits albums of Wet Willey, all songs I've never heard of, but don't have this one! If anyone knows where I can buy it please post or email me RLucas3000 @ aol . com
wabb or was it ksg, or the old g100,used to play this song every friday at 5pm for like 10 yrs. great song. makes workin during the week a little easier BUT i work most weekends. lol
The very first concert I ever went to was Wet Willie opening for Atlanta Rhythm Section. When Wet Willie did "Weekend" the crowd went wild in a way that I have yet to see again in the 30 years of concerts I have attended since.
Anybody know why you can't buy this song anywhere? There was obviously some dispute, probably over authorship/royalties, but I can't find anything on the 'net about it right now.
I just took the time to translate faberrimus's post from italian to english which was actually easy to do. He says he recalls hearing an original version to this song and wants to know if anybody knows anything about it.
The original was made by Mick Jackson...who also did the original version of "Blame It On The Boogie" which would later be recorded by Michael Jackson .
I used to get heat for liking this song cuz of it's disco sound. :You know how classic rock fans are...Gotta maintain that coolness and rock and roll purity, it can't sound like disco. It was a shame this song never cracked the top 40 chart cuz it's a winner all the way around..a 5 o'clock friday traffic jam right up there with Loverboy' working for the weekend. When Q104 in Gadsden,Al was still running they played it every friday afternoon.
@DjJohnnyM68 I remember there was a pseudo war between Q-104 and a couple of Birmingham FMers over playing that song at 5 on Fridays. No matter. I listened to it on WQEN-FM!
I remember hearing this song on the radio in 1979. The local station only played it for about aweek or two but I loved it. They never identified the group and I wronfully thought it was the Village People. lol...anyway never heard the song again until a couple of years ago thanks to youtube.
Nice edit. Wouldn't know it was if I didn't use to play and dance to the long version with the expanded harmonica licks. Gotta have the harmonica!!! Can you download the full -dance version, as shown in the photo above?
Oh yeah! And before I forget, the best time to me that this song was ever used was on the legendary WABB-FM in Mobile, Alabama as they did their wonderful "Five O'Clock Whistle" and that my friends was one of the BEST weekend montages I have ever heard in my life!! They took every song with either Fri, Sat, or Sun and put them together and blasted "Weekend" at the end of it!! I wonder if anyone has a recording of this??? I wished that they would post it if they did!!
Wow!!! I lived in Mobile in summer or 79 while I was in college, and remember WABB doing that weekend montage!! It WAS awesome, indeed!! I have looked for this song for the longest, and finally got it on CD from a friend. I also lived in Memphis in 80-82, and remember that FM 100 song you're talking about. I can't find it anywhere! If you find, PLEASE post....would LOVE to hear that again. Thanks for the memories!
Will definitely do it if I can find it... I actually found Wet Willie's "Weekend" on a bargain CD that has been out for some time at the late Tower Records a few years ago in downtown Memphis, and also on the album "Which One's Willie" at an old album shop back in the 90s in Baltimore practically brand new! The fidelity is incredible! I may try to contact WABB-FM in Mobile and see if anyone down there has the weekend montage on tape somewhere... That would be a blast!!

@MrTroyb1 Yes I definitely remember the times because it was 97.5 WABB-FM and I do believe that Ron Anthony was presiding over the festivities at 5:00 on every Friday afternoon... I know that someone is bound to have one of those mixes on cassette somewhere... That was the BEST Five O'Clock whistle ever!!
It was either FM 100 or Rock 103 Memphis, back in the day, the early 80's that played this every Friday at 5pm, without fail. Thanks for the great memories...miss those times..

If you like this you'll hear it some Friday's on 94.9 the Surf in Myrtle Beach. They play alot of beach music. Beach music and southern rock were cornerstones of party time in the south during the '70's and 80's. I grew up in Franklin, Va (class of '79) we got some beach music in there but we listened to mostly southern rock like skynard, Snuff, Robin Thompson, Home Grown Vigilante Band. Anybody seen Lisa Edwards? Haven't seen her since the '80 up at tech somewhere. OOPs just had a flashback
In the 80's, every Friday at 5:00 p.m. a radio station in Richmond, Va where I lived played this. It' was the "official" start of the weekend. What great memories!
I just posted on my Facebook page this link and made reference to the fact that 94Q made this the 5PM on-the-dot song on Fridays for years. Maybe as late as 1985. How funny other people have that same memory. Loverboy would of course become the next big Friday song. Good post!
there was a remake of this song done maybe a year after this. does anyone know who did it? can anyone help me try to find out you did it? there was a disco version. I just don't know who did it.
I haven't heard this song in probably 30 years (agh!). This was popular on the stations in Mobile when I was 10 years old, the Summer I really started getting into music.
Found out a few years later that my Dad taught a couple of these guys at Davidson High School and Mom taught another one at BC Rain, both in Mobile, Alabama. Pretty cool!
Hi Liam! Your right these guys are from Mobile and still play there every once in a while. Now it is just Jimmy Hall, but the music is still great. Nearly every station played this song fridays at Five. It was a great time to be in Mobile. Thank for the reminder of my childhood in Mobile.
Love this song forever--always wondered if the band embraced this song or street corner serenade. All the hype was over the harder edged "Keep on Smilin." I guess to each his/her own!
I was just telling my 13-year-old son about this song and my disco high school days.(actually singing this to my sone). He had a hard time understanding "party hearty." Too bad kids don't get it. :)
I noticed that the record label shown in this vid shows a run time of 7:14. Is the song on this record an extended version of "Weekend" but you played the radio edit for this vid? Just curious because I have never heard an extended version of this song and would be interested in hearing it on here if you have it to post.
OK, I think I'm cross-eyed now, but if you read the fine print on the label it says "Special Dance Version". I've never heard an extended version either.
UH UH I dubbed out the remaining 3 and a half minutes for a scaled down video ??? LOL. Hey hope you enjoy the video, but I hand it to you, if you aren't working for CSI you're missing your calling. That was a most astounding observation with little data to work with, LOL !!!
Great memories from way back when. Flying home from work on Friday afternoon and partying my butt off all weekend. AHHHHHHH those were teh good old days
I LOVED this song! A co-worker, Lola--was her name, and I would sing what we could of this song--the best line, "It's party harty time again!' The BEST song! I've not heard it in forever--thank's for sharing!
This tune rocks. Would hear this every Friday afternoon during the drive home block party. This song brings back some very nice memories and I've looked for 15 years trying to find it. Didn't know it was by 'Wet Willie'. Hadn't heard of the group before, but will never forget them now!!
tjw0099 you're quite welcome and thanks for watching/listening - the 70's & 80's were just outstanding times for music weren't they? Glad with YT that we can refresh these memories. Thanks again

Cheers

Friday Evening What a feeling!!!

Love this song forever--always wondered if the band embraced this song or street corner serenade. All the hype was over the harder edged "Keep on Smilin." I guess to each his/her own!

Omg! I love this song! I used to listen to it every Friday @ 5:00! Still do!

Marty Cohen stole the Party Hearty line for use on his stand-up shticks on Solid Gold in the early 80s.

Thanks for solving the mystery!!
