Realy fayik, I don't understand your surprise. As noskcajluap points out, it is a combination of their talent as musicians, their marching ability, and the tradition of the units. During times of uncertainty they also represent a stability and strength. Once thing is certain, their musicianship is always first-rate.
where's the interest in watching people play some trumpets and walk on some concrete. YOu see people walk along the streets everyday. I always wondered why everybody stopped to stand & stare at this.
When was the last time you saw 40 musicians marching along a street all playing the same thing!! Maybe you are just to dim to appreciate the skill, musicianship and tradition involved!
