  • The only part I agree with is when you say "I shouldn't be teaching this part".

  • Great lesson, really helpful. Thank you!

  • thanks

  • Thanks so much James. I picked up a guitar for the first time a little over 3 months ago. (Christmas gift) And I can play this song thanks to you! I may be your oldest student at 52.

  • Thanks very much for sharing and helping the rest of us understand Neil's work.

  • Good God, get more friggin lessons before you show others and I love how you keep saying, that just how he does it. You couldn't be more wrong. Learn it first then, if you want to teach, all the power to ya........

  • is next

  • great lesson i m working on it. the synchro and the singing in

  • My fingers are sore!! , but i've nearly got it.Thanks for posting, great lesson.

Het mooiste nummer van Neil Young vind ik,The needle and the damage done

Omdat ik zelf alles hebt gebruikte wat los en zit, maar dat is zeker 15 jaar geleden

En ik kan het nummer heel leuk spelen het komt ook op you tube.

    GR,whlsel......Bart

  • that really helped me with the run! and all the subtleties of the piece. thanks so much, you're a great teacher.

  • No problem. Glad it helped.

  • really nice lesson. great work man!

  • Thanks, I can't believe I can actually strum this great tune. Thanks to you.

  • Wow, I cannot think you enough sir!

This is great and now my guitar playing fire has sparked a new flame, I stopped playing and you inspired me to break out my Acoustic again and I havent put it down since. this song reminds me of my uncle, he use to play it when he was alive and now I can too, thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

  • The way you teach is really effective for me. Any chance of an "Old Man" lesson in the future?

  • Thank you very much! Your video was most helpful!

  • dude ur awesum man..i really love this song n wanted to learn it...n i cud actually play it while watchin ur videos...ur really a great teacher man..rock on

  • your the man keep on rockin thanks for the lesson

  • ha ha ha on the last line (ironic and good)

  • Songs about lamenting drugs or drinking ("I Threw It all Away"?). Enjoyed your plea to the musiclly challenged (that's me) and Dylan's "Buckets of Rain". Keep posting and I'll keep learning.

  • Unfortunately, due to theraputic bounderies laws, my "family members" (inmates)can't be photographed. However I would like to learn some other songs from you. Any ideas on some theraputic type songs you could teach? There is a small chance that I could record an MP3 file from the next graduation and I would be proud to share it with you. I do star in a half assed dungeons and dragons tribute group on this site called Morbid Public please check it out.

  • Not really sure what would qualify as "theraputic" since I wouldn't have even thought this one would. I suppose therapy comes in many forms.

  • Thank you Mr. Lynch! I work with I.V. drug users and I Played this song for a thereputic community of 80 methamphetamine addicts during their graduation cerimony. It was very meaningfull for all of us. Thank you for teaching me. Keep up the good work.

  • Wow! That's pretty moving. Any chance you'll post a video?

  • Thank you! That, my friend, was an excellent lesson. I've known the first part of this great Neil Young song for a long time but you taught me the rest. One of the best tutorials I've come across on the web. I'd love to see more Neil Young, James Taylor, Crosy etc if you ever have the time. Great playing.

    Cheers.

  • Thanks. My style clearly works for some and not at all for others. I think that in itself is interesting.

  • Awsome tutorial...I was getting so frustrated trying to figure out how he was playing his little run from watching him play the song here on youtube...Thanks a million!

  • Sure. My pleasure.

  • Great tutorial. You show all the details and explain as you go along. Most go thru it so fast you can't tell what they are doing. Keep up the great tutorials. I appreciate it.

  • You are welcome. Different students, different teachers. I do go slow and many complain, but I'm not doing this for them. I'm doing it for those who want the details. But the fast teachers are doing it for those that don't.

  • thank you james' since i found you on u tube my guitar playing has come on in leaps & bounds' merry christmas from england.

  • Well, I'll have one now! That's what it's all about. If only my math students got the same pleasure out of it.

  • Thank you so much for this lesson. You're a wonderful teacher. You explained the right and left hand so clearly, that even I understood, and I'm a beginner! I hope you're a professional musician or you have paying students too. You should cash in on your talent. Thanks for sharing it with us!

  • Nope, but I'm a professional teacher (of math) so I guess I do get paid for that.

  • You're a GOD! I will worship you always!

  • tried 2 learn that song for a couple of weeks now, lots of guys teaching it different.

got ure version in 2 min thankyou

  • Thanks dude you rock!

  • This is why YouTube is so great. Instead of one on one teaching from some schmuck that you have to pay, you get one very talanted instructer reaching out to thousands of people who want to learn the right way and from the best.

  • Even better, there are lots of different teachers trying to do the same thing. If one type of teaching isn't right for you, there are lots of others who do it differently. Very cool indeed. And there are plenty of folks doing covers too, and that helps. Youtube rules.

  • You better should listen to Neil's Song for a couple of Years! It's the greatest shit I ever heard...

  • GREAT STUFF Thanks to guitarist like you we can learn thank you sir very much!

  • you are the tops man, i really appreciate you, you should sell videos, fan , alan

  • em diggity! ha how random u smell

  • Well, he plays it a lot better! Seriously, what did you hear that is missing? I believe the notes are pretty darn close, but he really is playing it with much more rhythmic power and feel.

  • Your best lesson so far. Good job.

  • Thanks man, great job. Really good teaching technique.

  • Thanks
