Someone posted that this was a performance and not a rehearsal .Zappa 's concepts were of course best appreciated by musicians who knew what rules he followed & which ones he chose to break .The rest of us just buckled into our seats to enjoy the flight. His genius is obvious .The first time I heard Stockhausen or Cage thought it was an orchestra tuning up
@arselbert part of "The Rite Of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky, I believe. It's been awhile since I've heard the original. If not that particular composition, it's based on similar themes.
I saw Zappa in Pomona at I think it was Indian Hills College(?) and there was a guy a few rows back near us yelling, "do the one about the boogers!" over and over again until he got Zappa's attention. He looked out and squinted and said, "OMG, Kenny? Is that you?" It was, and he was invited onstage to join them to "do the one about the boogers..."
This was rebroadcasted on German tv after FZ's death. It is a full session filmed October 6, 1968 Beat Club, Radio Bremen TV, Bremen, Germany
Music played: * Improvisation/Soundcheck/Jam 3:13 * King Kong 2:22 / A Pound For A Brown (On The Bus) 3:35 / Sleeping In A Jar 12:30 / Uncle Meat 4:13 / Afternoon Of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask 2:45 / Lohengrin (Wagner) 2:23 / Let's Make The Water Turn Black 2:32 / Octandre (Varèse) 1:17
the little riff he does at the very beginning, kinda distorted bassy guitar sound , thats the same riff from stevies spankin, just goes to show how long you can play about with a riff before you actually use it
I personally don't agree. It's just a typical pentatonic warm-up. Of course it is somewhat close to the main "Stevie spanking" riff (it's the same melodic ambit), but for instance we find something similar at the very beginning of "Flakes" too.
im stuck on the irish YT site...not that i mind. its all gravy...but can anyone tell me how i got here and how i get back to the US site?....IS there an american site?...are there only irish people commenting here? this is cool but confusing. ...no im not dumb im just lost....maybe this is a good thing.
That is a great conglomeration of footage, thankyou for posting it! I've seen that rendition of 'Let's Make The Water Turn Black' before, but the rest is all new to me. Beautifully ephemeral jam at the beginning. Is that instrument that Motorhead Sherwood is wielding a baritone sax? If so, they're certainly bigger than I previously thought them to be.
How come this was cut out of the beat club dvd boxset?

Is the first thing Zappa's playing a song? Or just a random jam?

The jazzy version of Let's Make the Water Turn Black is brilliant. Still don't know why Zappa never performed it live with the vocals though.

3:32 sounds like the main riff of what would become "Hot Plate Heaven At The Green Hotel"

that first zappa riff sounded kind of like Eat That Question.

That was hilarious at the ending, playing a generic blues scale and having the chicks dancing :D
