00:03 Day Of The Dead showcases some of Tom Savini's most elaborate & effective gore/makeup fx, miles ahead of the cartoonish blue-skinned zombies in it's epic predecessor Dawn Of The Dead. The graphic deaths of Rhodes soldiers are nightmarish and intense, i wish Romero could return to this type of balls-out horror

Steel really wasn't a bad person at heart. You could tell at times when he was reluctant to shoot Sars at Rhodes orders. I think this is the reason he got a merciful death. Just blow your brains out.

@KillrB329 Romero wasn't always cruel just for the sake of being cruel. I find those kind of endings to be a cop-out. Sure, Night Of The Living Dead didn't end so well, but he left things open-ended in Dawn Of The Dead. But the ending of Dawn makes you understand why Robert Kirkman created The Walking Dead. I was also frustrated by not knowing what happened to Peter and Fran after they flew away from the mall in the helicopter. I wished that Romero had stuck with a regular cast in his sequels.

So, they made it to the island. As much as I know about human nature, we all get sick.  In a tropical area even more so. So, me if I were in such a situation I would have to take a bullet. I have asthma and about 2 to 3 weeks without my medication, or as the level in my blood dropped below a therapeutic level, I would gradually start to have bronchial constriction and die a slow death. Especially in a tropical area. John was right. All they had left was time and use it and make it count.

Sucks that Romero's budget for the movie was cut almost in half. His original screenplay for Day of the Dead was a hell of a lot more indepth than what ended up being filmed. Still a very good/dark/depressing movie, but I would have loved to see the original movie George has in mind. The screenplay is somewhere on the net.

@Nitram916 you notice at the end when he only has a hand gun he does just that. Those men had enough ammunition if they would have stayed together to take out everyone of the zombies. Remember they could have went into the corral and dropped the gates. Just had a few zombies to take on. However, by their not doing that, the zombies moved away from the platform and Sara, Billy and John were able to escape with relative ease. John was right, a 14 mile tombstone.

@Nitram916 George Romero didn't know anything about the military when he made these zombie movies. Rhodes would have been relieved of command in a heartbeat, and guys like Rickles and Steel wouldn't have made it past boot camp.

The military makes physical fitness mandatory among its servicemen, and Rickles is definitely not up to standards. The other soldiers all look like pot-smoking hippies. Romero stated that this movie takes place only three to four months after Night Of The Living Dead, so it's not quite enough time for them to all fall that much out of shape.

@44excalibur the whole idea is that unit discipline has fallen pretty to one side...besides given the state of the world outside and the fact that most of the unit are really bad shots theyre probably conscripts drafted in as a last ditch method by whatever government was still operating

@jokerclayface That's possible, but remember that Romero stated the events in Day Of The Dead take place mere months after Night Of The Living Dead, and I doubt in the midst of a pandemic and martial law that the government would have time to draft a conscription army, or that there would be many healthy candidates. I believe that Romero was just making his usual socio-political commentary based on his own views that he acquried during the Vietnam era, making his soldiers look like buffoons.

It was a great time to be a teenager -- if you weren't a geek getting bullied, that is. A guy I work with was in the Navy and he said they have a mandatory 5 to 10 mile run every day. They don't tolerate soldiers, sailors and Marines being out of shape. My dad was in the Navy, and they discharged him when they found out he was colorblind. My point is that Rickles and Steel(as well as Rhodes) are actors who don't seem representative of how soldiers actually are, but more the way George Romero wants to negatively portray them.

@Eldeecue What about it? Don't even go there. This is a zombie movie. Even James Cameron apologized for his portrayal of the Marine Corps in 'Aliens.' He revealed that he didn't know anything about the military in his DVD commentary, and that he has a cousin who is in the Marines. Cameron admitted that the characters that he wrote were stereotypical, Vietnam-era regular Army, and that real Marines were much more disciplined. This is kind of the same thing that Romero did here.
