After watching this, now I SEE why my endgame sucks. I spend most of my focus in the midgame looking for attacks, and the endgame seems to be more about looking for THEIR attacks and preventing it from happening at all.
God just when I thought I was getting better.... I'm still soooooooo far away from being good.
Very sharp. I never considered playing Nf6 after Nxe4; it does appear to give Black better central control. I automatically throw out Bf5 instead, but I like the central control the knight move generates.
Also interesting that you both missed Qa6 followed by Qc8+... it seems the Caro-Kann can fall victim to a quick queenside attack if not played properly.
why does the opponent castle with the right side instead of the left? I mean it makes no sense to leave the king open like that and if he castled the other way he would have 2 rooks in development
Great videos Jerry, though tell me, how is it that you have become so experienced in the game? Did you study often, or did you more rely on losing from stronger opponents in order to learn from mistakes?

@TheAkashiyer Thanks. I don't know how to interpret a 1900 rating on a playing site to an actual over the board rating. Too many variables to be accurate.
That Bishop check move was difficult to understand. How were you sure he would castle Queenside? How are you sure he would play Kb1 after castling queenside?
@ChessNetwork Enjoyed your video, but there is one move that perplexes me, 7:42 Rc7-c4, it you ask me it seems that after Nb3-c5 your rook is not allowed to move on it's current rank cause of the pawns, it can't move downwards because of the knight and moving upwards is not an option either case the c-pawn is over defended.
While your rook can not be taken by a piece as long as the guarding pawn remains I don't understand why your putting the rook at place with so low mobility, care to explain?
at 1:41, you mention that he can play Qa6 (maintaining the threat of Qc8+ to pick up blacks h8 Rook) - however after ...Rb6, can't black force white to move the queen and then pick off the b2 pawn with the rook as well?
In case you care, I usually play the Bishop to f5, then g6 after Ng3, then play the queen's knight to d7 before bringing the king's knight to f6. That way I avoid moving the g pawn. I have at times deliberately allowed a knight to take the bishop on g6 and replied with hxg6, opening the king's rook file for an attack: with the queen on c7 this converges on the h2 pawn.
Is the point of Nf6 to open the g file for the h rook after a queen-side castle? I play Caro-Kann, but have never invited the knight exchange like that.
you explain WHY in every move....this helps out newbies to build a better picture of chess in their heads of how it should be played...everything has to have a purpose
im still a beginner at chess just learned how to play an i have a question can you castle out of check? also just wanna say hate having my pawns make it all the way across an the second they become queens they get killed by rook'... my last game i had 3 diff queens during the game an ended with just our kings an my rook X3
@ChessNetwork is the caro kahn defense meant to thwart the knight attack on b5 also is it meant to castle queenside i noticed u destroyed the king side pawn wall to take the knight
nice game, i found myself in sort of the same position against my grandfather ( i lost) but i didnt consider using my king in the end game like you did to provoke his pawns to move up. it was a good learning lesson for me watching this vid
At 3:17 when you capture white's king you say that the pawns should be together. Well wouldn't they be together even if you captured with the other pawn? Did you choose this pawn because you wanted to maintain the center?
I watching this and crying, I started playing chess three weeks ago, I would need ages to learn to play or maybe similar as this.. btw I have question, versus queen gambit I also play counter queen gambit? And versus king gambit I play French or Sicilian Defense, what is more common for beginners?
@B3l1Cool well chess like everything else is practice and about the openings you use the truth are no the best. Against e4 french sicilian and caro kann are the best but sicilian have to many variation and is pretty complicated so you should try the other 2. Against d4 the best are king indian and nimzo indian {nimzo can also be play with a queen indian style}. But instead of practicing that much opening you should try endgames chess is the game you learn from end to beginning. End midle opening
chess_network rated 2695.. i havent seen you logging in a certain chess site lately. (i have to secret w/c is the site sorry..) anyway nice videos.. im a caro kann player myself i could learn a lot from these.
Hey, i'm trying to learn chess myself and i must say your videos help so much to understand new tactics, but at 0:26 would it be a bad move if the white player moved his "h" pawn to attack the bishop, maybe forcing him to run instead of moving his own bishop to break the tension? Thoughts please?
@ABCGHII Not bad, but not beneficial really. h3 can potentially prove to be a weakness should white castle kingside. Be2 seems good as it develops a piece! :)
When black moved the rook to C7 to attack the G file, wouldn't white have been better off moving his rook to G1 to defend G7? It just seems like that rook wasn't as mobile as it could have been toward the end.
Im a caro-kann player {I hate sicilian} and I use the main variation 4. Bf5 or the one Karpov play Nd7. Can you explain why do you prefer the nimzovich-flour Nf6 variation? I know its better in a kind of way because it give more center control because of the bend pawn in f but I still think then any of this variations is better
@awais590 I dont like the sicilian because i think its only for experts begginers slike me should stick to the french defence bcause it seems solid and lazy what i mean by lazy is the defence requires less thgought and subtelty than the sicilian ! what you think ! ps im arguing specificaly for beginers here not gms !
@awais590 ITS PROVE THEN THE CHESS GAME IS 30% ANALYSIS AND 70% TO RECOGNIZE THE POSITION. E4 C5 IS PRETTY COMMON AND IF YOU PLAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT YOU HAVE STUDY AND YOUR OPPONENT HAVEN'T YOU ALREADY HAVE AN ADVANTAGE. HAS I SAID I'M A CARO KANN PLAYER SO HAS YOU CAN EXPECT I PREFER A SOLID POSITION AND THE SICILIAN GIVES BETTER CENTER CONTROL BECAUSE OF THE C5 BUT IT LEAVES THE BLACK DIAGONAL OPEN FOR B IN G5 ATTACKING THE Q.
hello, hey what programs do you use for your videos that I upload some similar interests, you use 2 does not? the chess and to tax the screen, but as they are called?
one thing I don't understand is why your opponent queen-side castled instead of king-side. It looks like the king would be safer king-side castling instead. Can you please explain why he castled queen-side when there are two diagonals open toward his king?
You must be VERY intelligent to be able to think through all these moves. I'd like to play chess but I'm terrible at it. It's a very frustrating game for me...there's way too much to think about.
Thanks for the videos! I really appreciate how you go over a lot of the "what if"s and "why"s that i think a lot of other videos miss. Cause then it takes a lot more time for me to to through and figure out why that was a bad move. Thanks a ton!
"Play the Caro-Kann " from Jovanka Houska gives a good basis for Caro-Kann beginners: - Main line 11.Bf4 - main Line 11.Bd2 - Main Line 6.Bc4 and Early Deviations - Panov-Botwinnik Attack 6. Nf3 - Panov-Botwinnik Attack: 6. Bg5 - Exchange Variation - Advance variation with 3. .. c5 - Advance variation with 3...c5 4. dxc5 - Fantasy variation ( 3.f3 ) - Panov's little Brother 2.c4 - Two Knights variation - King's Indian attack - Unusual lines to plain bizarre I like it.
How did you know that he would queen side castle? That is why you said you provoked the pawn move to open up the diagonal for the light squared bishop to check the king. If he castles king side, that threat wouldn't have existed. Would the check with the dark squared bishop in the beginning been a wasted move then? I am not criticizing your game. Just a beginner trying to pick up a few tips.
Someone awhile back asked a similar question. I did the Bb4+ move so as to potentially benefit myself in the event of white castling queenside. I didn't know for certain that that was the direction the king would head towards, but I saw it as more likely than kingside in lieu of the half open g-file.
another great game and good anaylsis.... your vids compete with the top channels like GCB jrobi kingscrusher and others.... you should keep makeing vids people DO watch them
There are many factors which go into determining which side to castle. Common is kingside castling as it takes fewer moves to execute. In this video i think white was discouraged by kingside castling in lieu of my not having a g-pawn because i could place a rook on the g-file and put pressure on whites king position. Another thing to consider when castling is"Are the pawns that will be near my king be on their home squares?". Generally speaking, pawns are better defenders when home.
I have a question about the advanced variation (Short variation) of the Caro Kann defense: after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 c5 6.Be3 cxd4 7.Nxd4
Ne7 8.c4 Nbc6 9.Nc3, why did Black not capture the e5 pawn? What is the compensation for White because I can't see it?
IThe game is in 1998 Shirov vs Anand. I'm sure I have seen this type of position where white has an unguarded e5 pawn (I think I saw Topalov played a line like this), but I don't see the compensation for White.
when you play the caro kann, do you face both 3.Nc3 and Nd2 the same way by taking the pawn? Or is there something bad about Nd2? Thanks
Also when you provoked the weakness with Bb4, would ganging up on d4 first have been better, forcing him to play c3? then you wouldn't have to use a tempo on the check.
I don't think Nd2 would be bad. It's maybe played so as to allow the c-pawn to move in certain instances. I don't know if I think the idea of ganging up on the d4 pawn.
Whoa, hold up... at about the 3 minute mark you said that you made the bishop move provoking the pawn advance so later you could check the king and win a pawn. How in the hell could you expect your opponent to castle long and then also move his king into harm's way for your bishop to throw a check at it? Are you cheating or something =)
It wasn't a certainty that I knew he'd castle queenside. But I thought that he might choose such since the g-file is open. By provoking the pawn move, I felt it would only benefit black if at all. That is as far as my thinking went at that point.
Wow, amazing skills and much thought! I'm inspired because I love playing the Caro-Kann and this was a match that will have a significant effect on my game from now on. Great Job!
Thank you so much for posting this game. I believe that you have many tactical and strategical positions that could be studied and analyzed. As aforementioned, thank you for posting this.

When castling, how do decide whether to castle queen or king side?
What types of situations is it better to castle queen side?
dottielol 2 years ago

Thanks
Also when you provoked the weakness with Bb4, would ganging up on d4 first have been better, forcing him to play c3? then you wouldn't have to use a tempo on the check.
jamesjddong 2 years ago
I don't think Nd2 would be bad. It's maybe played so as to allow the c-pawn to move in certain instances. I don't know if I think the idea of ganging up on the d4 pawn.
Thanks for the comment.

Whoa, hold up... at about the 3 minute mark you said that you made the bishop move provoking the pawn advance so later you could check the king and win a pawn. How in the hell could you expect your opponent to castle long and then also move his king into harm's way for your bishop to throw a check at it? Are you cheating or something =)
vindictive24 2 years ago
It wasn't a certainty that I knew he'd castle queenside. But I thought that he might choose such since the g-file is open. By provoking the pawn move, I felt it would only benefit black if at all. That is as far as my thinking went at that point.
