It's a video artifact. Stopping it on the exact frame reveals that the top third of the frame with the real lightning bolt is "ghosted" onto the bottom third of the frame, making it appear as if a failed stepped leader is near the girl. This is a common occurrence when filming lightning with amateur video equipment, and the vast majority of the videos on YouTube that claim to show a close call with lightning are actually just this ghosting phenomenon.
lol why do ppl think that every close lightning strike video is automaticly fake.. like no way in the world could any1 ever record a lightning strike that strikes that close...
HEY LADIES GO OUT THERE WEARING YOUR COOPER DRESSES AND CLIMB THE HIGHEST TREE OUT THERE UP TO THE TIPY TOP OF IT AND SAY HEY GOD FOR FUCK SAKES REALLY IS THIS ALL YOU GOT AND THEN FLIP HIM OFF AND THEN WHEN YOU SEE THAT BRIGHT LIGHT IT WONT BE AT THE END OF NO TUNNEL LMFAO!!!!!
It must have been an optical illusion. A bolt of lightning that close would produce an extremely loud clap of thunder right away. The closer you are to the bolt the louder the thunder is.
Looks like the bolt was shifted down in the video (notice the black bar on top of the screen during the flash). Still, that does not mean that there wasn't a nearby streamer that could have still been lethal had the main bolt connected there. Also, ground currents from nearby strikes can kill.
Very silly thing to do, although saying that most people do it. A lady was killed in Howell New Jersey, when she went out to her car, lighting struck her in the few seconds it took to get from inside to the car.
Ok so I know it was a close call with my Daughter, don't get it twisted I was worried about her when she did this. Thank God she was not hit by the lighting. I love her and hope she will never do this again, but she goes storm chasing with our local Firefighters. She is a very brave young Lady to have done this, but now we make sure that we have all the chairs we need to watch out storms.
I think that may have either been a reflection or a failed streamer, in which case the girl was very, very lucky not to have been hit. I am sure if lightning had come so close to you the thunder would have been explosive. The crackle is very scary. Did she not feel any static or other sensations? I have seen lightning hit the ground 15 metres from where I was stood and it sounded like a cannon going off. Brave girl to run out like that.

That is because the metal on the chair attracted the lightning
ihavealotoffunnyfavz 2 years ago
No metal even required. The human body is enough.

the lightning bolt that seemed right next too her was actually the positive bolt and not the real bolt. this has fooled many people

The chairs are NOT worth your life. Even if you don't get struck directly, a near by strike can still kill via current running through the ground.
