When this was on TV for the first time I somehow was able to watch some of it. The part where they are caught filming the documents and Roscoe Lee Browne's escape scared the hell out of me. The image of him returning successfully to his place of work after he gets rid of the film has never left me. It's quite a payoff.
it's not his best but it's better than some of the rubbish they make today. i wish you could buy the original directors cut with the 'duel' at the end. it's time they brought it out instead of tacking it on to a dvd as a filler. Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock has no peers or equalls
This one of Hitchcock's very lowest ranked films, I just watched it however and it is one of the better Cold War thrillers I've seen. The complexity of the plot and variety of locations definitely work in its favor, and Hitchcock was always a master director, whether he was inspired in a particular film or not. Look at "Family Plot", his last film, for example, a silly throwaway film but still perfectly enjoyable.
I just finished this book and can't wait to rent the movie. I don't know how this escaped me , being a Hitchcock fan and remembering when this happened.
does anyone know if the actress who drops the ornament in the shop is the same girl who is married later on? i love topaz, maybe it was a flop because its not the kind of film that isn't instantly impressive, but something enjoyable - to me anyway
I had a group of friends watch this at a party and when it ended, they all turned to me and started asking me if I was mental for liking a film like "Topaz"
the answer is... I probably am mental! I think this film is great!
Personally, I think age afflicted Hitchcock after the birds and his films were never quite as good. They were still good though, just not as good as his 40's 50's and Psycho and The Birds.
This is Hitch's most underrated flick of his career. Critics say it's full of contrivances, but what do they know. Rent this movie and enjoy what it was probably like living behind the scenes of the cold war when JFK was The Man.

This movie is the best! I agree with the poster below about them getting caught photographing the documents. Scary shit.
Never appreciated movies like these until i got older.

How many directors appeared in the trailers for their films? I can't really think of any other than Hitch. He was a brand name himself.

The script was rewritten as they shot the film, which explains why it's such a mess. But I love the music in this trailer.

This is sadly one of Hitchcock's most underrated film.

@GenV Well, hitch always made his movies for the audience not the critics. So, as long as we are happy with it, he's happy...
