He's absolutely right. The system is set up to maximize college ratings and profits. It's a numbers and statistic, and they treat medical school applicants like swine - the same way the do for every other industry in the United States.
And we wonder why we're falling behind in education, research, industry, production, finance, and economic power.
The person with the cure for AIDS, is probably working at Burger King because medical schools turned him/her down due to test scores.
if you say test score doesnt matter or if it matters more than extra stuff, then thats just ignorance. b.c test scores shows your knowledge, your ability to memorize and use your knowledge. although extra activities does matter, if you suck in terms of grade, i believe thats still a reflection of your abilities as a possible doctor. so if you really want to be a doctor, then you will WORK for those grades and all that is needed to suceed.
dont complain. if you really want it, then play the game
I don't really think it is TOO demanding.. I've been able to do the paramedic traning as well as clinical time while keeping good grades in my pre-med studies as well as studying for the MCAT... it has tought me so much and has been extremely rewarding
Hey funniman, i was thinking of taking the emt class's myself in preperation to get extra experience in the medical field. this semester im taking orgo bio and trig, do you think it would be possible for me to take the EMT class's as well
little late, but I was just Licensed as a Paramedic while taking full time pre-med courses and preparing for MCAT. Have done well in all... It IS possible!
Actually, admissions committees place a high value on "upstanding" personal qualities and medically related experiences. In order to reach the interview pool, however, you have to be intelligent enough to do well in medical school, as measured primarily by the MCAT. The thinking tested on the USMLE's is very similar to the thinking tested on the MCAT. Also, laypersons' understanding of good vs. bad doctors is often whether or not they are kind to patients rather than 'are they competent'?.
That professor is an honest man. He has been around and he knows what the reality of life is ...just wish these comments would reach the committees admitting some of today's worst possible choices for a medical student.
If I maybe so bold as to request a video explaining the whole process of application to medical school in US? I live in UK and got into medical school in London but am intrigued with US system.
You know I am a undergraduate now who wants to go medical school, and number 2, 3, 4, 6 apply to me, number 6 I would want to be zach braff from "Scrubs" well god bless!
Good luck! I am 18, in my second year undergraduate, and am working hard for it. Do the same and stay motivated, focused, patient, serious, self-reflective, caring, relaxed, and enthusiastic and wish to God you're doing the right thing. Just work hard... Try your own ways and see how you acheive. And make sure you avoid distractions like TV, Youtube (yes I know...), and Facebook ... They're a studier's pitfall no matter whom.
LOL. My sister just started as an anesthesiologist last May. She makes 300K a year... Granted I think her malpractice is 80K a year, but that still leaves 200+k a year.
As an applicant who will be attending medical school this fall, I feel the MCAT is weighed too heavily in admissions. MCAT is a tool for admissions to weed out students and make it easier for them to select based on numbers that will make their school look good. I know students who dropped out of med school because they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. But hell, they had great MCAT scores so that must mean they'll make great physicians, right?
I've heard the comment that the top 1/3 of medical school applicants make the bottom 1/3 of doctors. I guess there is a fundamental difference between being a good test taker and a good student academically and being a good hands-on practicing doctor.
Oh, and I forgot to mention. You don't even have to be a science major anymore to get into medical school, and that's the sad thing because biology majors like me have to compete with art, history, and english majors (which are easier than science) to get into medical school and they don't even specialize in science and they can get in now.
A biology degree is a very easy degree to obtain - just memorize a bunch of info, there's no thinking involved. And as a current medical student who had to slog through your biology classes, I was least impressed by my peers who were biology majors (I'm not a liberal arts major either, so I'm definitely not saying this for my benefit)
Hope you get into your medical school of choice, but don't be surprised when it's you biology majors having the most difficulty as an MS-I.
Thanks. I actually changed my major to biochemistry awhile ago because I wasn't to happy with the biology major. Even though it is harder, it is more interesting to me. And I will take your advice.
Hi stupidvideo 1981, yeah I dont think thats right I mean maybe the biology peers you are with only with to a community college. I mean I am a biology major. But enough of that I needed to ask you a question. The question is that, lets say you want to be a medical researcher and what would you say a better place to go A graduate school or a medical school? Just asking lol, also how about a Biology major with a chemistry minor, is that good.
I am a PhD student at a medical school. Depends on what area of biomedical research your interested in. If it's genetics, toxicology, or microbiology than a university graduate program may be better. If you are interested in whole-animal physiology than you should look at a medical school. If you minor in biology, go through organic chemistry and major in math or physics you will be able to go anywhere. My physics 3.4 GPA/bio minor was accepted everywhere I applied.
He is right. Most medical colleges now are more focused on popularity than proper education. UCI Medical School is lowering its standards on admission because UCLA and Stanford have the two best medical schools in California and they are sucking up all the students, so as UCI lowers their standards to attract more applicants, more people can get in with mediocre grades than with superb ones.

anyone EVER think about becoming a paramedic??... now thats an extracurricular activity worth doing!! (for pre-med students anyways)

the hours for training are too demanding (assuming the individual is taking a regular pre-med workload)
EMT-B training has less requirements, and is still good for clinical exposure, etc

1)Be born into a wealthy family which pushes their kids to be overachievers
2)Adjust your self-worth based on GPA
3)Put social standing at primary importance after relationships, spirituality, compassion..etc.
3)Appear altruistic by volunteering in order to convince people that social standing is not important.
4)Learn to regurgitate information on exams
5)Pay $1000's for MCAT/interview prep, and application services.
6)Get MD and pretend you are the star of your favorite hospital drama.

too bad doctors make only $40k a year after you graduate.
nurses make about the same too - only $40k a year.

the only time doctors ever make $40k a year is during their residency.
