@jirishj I never think of myself as having chops, I must admit! I am at the limit of my ability just trying to play the groove, and there is so much energy required in this that by the time I find myself trying to play one of Terry's outrageous fills, I flail around the kit like a madman - you are right :-)
With these Flix sticks, this song is especially physical. I'll be re-doing this vid over Christmas on my Roland and with wooden sticks - I'll try and lighten up!
Great Job, was wondering if you have done Eddie Money - Two Tickets to Paradise? Or if you plan on it, would love to see you play that one..Keep up the good work..Awesome
hi jouxplan. geeeeee....amazing. you're an artist as well as an athlete and I very much enjoy listening and watching you work! a question (I am no drummer): what is a "ride"? cheers, D
'Ride' is the large cymbal over to my right that I use at times instead of the hi hat to my left - my right hand plays the ride. Not to be confused with the 'crash' cymbals, which make a 'crash' noise when I wallop them. The ride is not for walloping - it makes more of a 'ting-ting' sound. I am playing the ride a lot in the final minute or so, and hitting the crashes during those massive drum fills / rolls :-)
@jouxplan thanks for answering so fast and yes, it sure helped. I am very impressed how you're taking so much time answering nearly all comments you're getting. Wow! The very best wishes to you. D
@conory It is indeed a cat. They like to get in on my YouTube videos!
Many thanks, and especially glad you appreciated the ride work - it is what makes this song so incredibly difficult to copy: everyone thinks it is the big fills, but it is the subtle beauty of that ride work and it swings, fast, which is horribly hard! Mr Williams was the Man!
@Maudit1972 but, but.......this must be the most dynamic video I have on YouTube!!!!! I hit the drums like I hate them, and then when I have to play that horribly tough swinging ride and I have to go all quiet!
Seriously, this is as dynamic as I can get on this track - I am not capable of playing it with any more finesse or subtlety: I am at the limit of my ability :-)
Congratulations, very good! Of all the videos of drummers doing a cover of the song Sultans of Swing Live, was that you realized how good it is to hear a good drummer, who is involved with the music and feel every beat as it were an extension of the su body. Fantastic. I am Brazilian and I could see your video in Japan.
@anlizabr Thank you for translating into english, and many thanks for the kind words! I love how YouTube brings us altogether - a Brazilian in Japan watching a video of me in the UK!
There is only one way to play Sultans live on drums IMHO: full-on, passion, energy. It exhausts me every time! Really glad you appreciated it :-)
I know next to nothing about drumming but this is probably the second best drumming of this song I have ever heard.........Terry Williams is first but I am considering switching that around after watching this a few times.
Really, this is great! And the sound on your video is great as well........at times, it almost sounds like the drummer from Rush with the air drums. It sounds so great, keep up the good work!
This video has once again blown my boots off !! This superb live version is very hard to cover and you certainly pull it off. You must have put a huge amount of time in to get those fills right. Superb mate.
@nazecliffs Hey, thank you! I have been playing along to this for many years (25?), and so I kind of new it already. What I did was to write out the sequence of fills using my own drum notation (I cannot read drum music), and made sure to read this as I played along. Otherwise, it is dam hard to remember which fill comes next! Time? Yes, I spent several hours a week over a month or so, trying to get it all sorted :-)
As a huge fan of ds and mk, mate, really i take pleasure to see this video !! i'd love to see u on telegraph road from alchemy too, and solid rock and.....
IMHO terry was dire straits best drummer they ever had ! If u work on another ds live video with ur drum, feel free to let me know !!!
@trackeur77 Hey, that is very high praise! I thank you!
I have to admit that I have always loved the Love Over Gold version of Telegraph Rd the best, which is why I have covered that version on here instead (it is on my Others playlist). Alchemy is a great live album though :-) and I will be doing Once Upon Time In West and Romeo Juliet from it.
Easiest way to find out when I do 'em is to subscribe - I will never remember to inform you otherwise!!
Hi again jouxplan :), i watched this video many times,i love it. it's a perfect cover but i can't bellieve that you have only 25,116 views this moment. it's awesome,it's perfect.5/5,you rock!
@TheAndrumming Hello my friend. I am very glad you liked this so much! 'Perfect' is a strong word, and is not quite true in this case - I could never play this as brilliantly as Terry Williams did that night :-) Still, it is great fun trying!
25,000 views isn't too bad, fo me! I think you have to do covers of Rush or Red Hot Chilli Peppers or something, to suddenly get like 250,000 views of a single vid. My most popular vid (Police Message In Bottle) is only on 77,000 views!
Alex, it,s perfect! You are too modest. I seldom watch drum covers (and nearly never make), but really enjoyed this one! And I drum very similar things into it, so was happy saying: that,s it!
The original drummer is not better than You - according to me - moreover, his bass drum leg is a bit lazy. I guess, You pedalled more, and it was better.
@brutorette Long story - too keep things quieter; I record using only a camcorder with no mixing going on, so sticks would be way too loud. I have not used wooden sticks for 25 years - another long story - see my jouxplan website (link on channel) for reasons. They are Flix Sticks btw :-)
5 piece Pearl Export dating from 1986, with the two little toms added about 7 years ago - cheap ones by Stagg but they sound great with new skins. Cymbals are all Zildjians. There is a lot of detail and photo's of my kit on my jouxplan website - link on my channel!
Nice work Dude. Do you do requests? Eddie & The Hot Rods 'Do Anything You Wanna Do' would be cool! - Also, Clem Burke has to be my all time Drumming hero, who's yours?
@Izzetafox Thank you! Requests - sort of! If I know of it, like it, thbhink it would be interesting to everyone, and am capable of playing it, then yes!
Clem Burke effectively taught me how to open and close a hi hat! What I mean is that I spent hours trying to play 'Heart Of Glass' when it came out and I was like 10 pr something. My heros = Phil Collins, Chester Thompson, Stewart Copeland and Keith Carlock, to name only 4. There are others!
@Magnesiur Hello! Thank you - the china is a Zildjian K 15" Mini China. Lots more info and pics of the kit on my jouxplan website - link on my channel :-)
The only contribution by Terry Williams on the BiA album was the intro for 'Money for Nothing'. Such a sh*t drummer, that he was replaced by Omar Hakim. A pity that Pick left in 1982.
@PimpinBassie2 Wooaaaaahhhh! I got to disagree with you my friend! Terry Williams cannot possibly be described as 'sh*t''. I can hardly believe I am reading this. Surely his work on Alchemcy proves my point? As for Hakim - wonderful drummer also, but hugely different style, is all.
i myself haven't the technologey,or the fancy cadgets for doing drum covers,by useing computers, thow i really would love to but back to your playing or basically the drum cover you've picked is definitetly a hard one to say the lease, but you nail it speacially bout 4;10,really nice fill on 4;16.
i'm sure mark would agree, you don't see to many dire straits covers, and i'm sure the viewers would know why so dam hard and of tempo, great work cheers matt.
The fills are all tough, and seem to get harder the further in you get! Anyway, it is great fun trying to play this! And hard work - it's very physical :-)
wow! one of your videos was recommended to me by a drummer friend and through that i found this - crazily good! even though i'm not a drummer myself, it's stuff like this that makes me sure that if i could learn to play one thing, it would be a drumkit! i've never seen arms move that fast, epic!!
My tuning skills are non-existent, but I did recently change every batter and resonant head on the kit (er, some of the resonants had been on since 1987) and changed my snare wires, and things have certainly improved.
What would you like me to say? You don't like my cover. Fair enough.
It is the same song though. What I suspect you are actually trying to say is that my drumming is so awful and utterly inconsistent with the original, that it no longer even remotely sounds like the same song.
Hi, i used to have lesson's off terry 3 years ago. Hes a friend of my grandfather. Im from Swansea. Unfortunately Terry turned to alcohol. He broke his leg about a week and half ago. Just thought id let you know haha. Exellent drumming cover aswwell mate. Pleasure to listen too.
For my part, I am proud of this video, and very glad that I posted it. Everyone else seems to like it too, have you noticed?
My technique (mechanics?) is indeed terrible - I have never had any lessons and after 35 years of playing with brushes in order to not annoy neighbours, my technique is absolutely awful.
Still, I manage to hit most things in about the right place, even if it looks crap.
@jouxplan. There was no offense intended here. The version you are playing is actually harder than the original, and you did better than I think a lot of drummers could do. I just get a little tired of so called "drummers" posting videos like they are pros and if you give them any criticism, you get told off and cussed at. Sorry if you got offended, I actually think it's pretty good especially for the level of difficulty for this version. Keep up the good work.
@jouxplan. Actually I watched it back a couple of more times and your speed and accuracy is incredible. Thats what will separate you from the pack. Awesome man.
@menoxu I am humbled, all the more so because your original comment was less than friendly! Thank you!
Yeah, I hate getting into fights with people on YouTube, and I know what you mean about the way some us respond to criticism. I try very hard to avoid getting nasty, and respond to contructive criticism. I am my own worst critic anyway!
It is a 1987 Zildjian Impulse 22". It is a monster that I got when I was a student. I got it 'cos it looked cool as hell, which is a shame, 'cos I don't like the sound!!! There are pics and more detail on the 'kit' page of my jouxplan website (link on my channel).
The sticks are Flix Sticks - bundles of nylon fibres, which behave a lot more like wooden sticks the jazz brushes. However, they are not designed for rimshots, as you have clearly spotted!
But I really don't think I can play it properly!! I have tried a couple of times in recent weeks (I promise) and it is just too fast for me!!! Copeland is A BEAST on that one :-)
Really super drummer. I often and watch your videos here and I love it!! I´m a drummer too, for a year now but this is a very good inspiration!! Keep on going with this Alex! (Yes, i visited your webpage ;-) )
very nice

hey great drumming over al to begin with.
i myself haven't the technologey,or the fancy cadgets for doing drum covers,by useing computers, thow i really would love to but back to your playing or basically the drum cover you've picked is definitetly a hard one to say the lease, but you nail it speacially bout 4;10,really nice fill on 4;16.
i'm sure mark would agree, you don't see to many dire straits covers, and i'm sure the viewers would know why so dam hard and of tempo, great work cheers matt.
matttildesley 1 year ago
Cheers! Glad you like it.
The fills are all tough, and seem to get harder the further in you get! Anyway, it is great fun trying to play this! And hard work - it's very physical :-)

wickerman76 1 year ago
That's very kind of you! But I am no where near as good as Mr Williams :-)
Plenty more vids on the way!
jouxplan 1 year ago
wow! one of your videos was recommended to me by a drummer friend and through that i found this - crazily good! even though i'm not a drummer myself, it's stuff like this that makes me sure that if i could learn to play one thing, it would be a drumkit! i've never seen arms move that fast, epic!!
Ibsyj 1 year ago
Hey, thank you! I am humbled that your drummer friend recommended one of my videos :-)
Glad you like this one - yes, it is a bit hectic!!
jouxplan 1 year ago
must admit I'm not a fan of your snare sound, but a really really good cover nevertheless
jesusflies 1 year ago
Ha! Ha! Neither am I!!!!
My tuning skills are non-existent, but I did recently change every batter and resonant head on the kit (er, some of the resonants had been on since 1987) and changed my snare wires, and things have certainly improved.
Many thanks!

god i love your sticks! :P where do your get them and what brand are they
zfguitaristjc11 1 year ago
Ok!
They are Flix sticks, and are made in Scotland. Get them from a good Ebay shop is easiest. More about Flix on my channel!

What would you like me to say? You don't like my cover. Fair enough.
It is the same song though. What I suspect you are actually trying to say is that my drumming is so awful and utterly inconsistent with the original, that it no longer even remotely sounds like the same song.
Whatever...........
jouxplan 2 years ago
sorry but bad, it's not the same song :(

this is wonderful too!!! =)

This is not good at all. Your mechanics are terrible. There is a kid on you tube that plays this better. I would not have posted this dude.
menoxu 2 years ago
Thank you.
Ta.
jouxplan 2 years ago
Keep up the good work.
menoxu 1 year ago
@jouxplan. Actually I watched it back a couple of more times and your speed and accuracy is incredible. Thats what will separate you from the pack. Awesome man.
menoxu 1 year ago
@menoxu I am humbled, all the more so because your original comment was less than friendly! Thank you!
Yeah, I hate getting into fights with people on YouTube, and I know what you mean about the way some us respond to criticism. I try very hard to avoid getting nasty, and respond to contructive criticism. I am my own worst critic anyway!

nice cover man, very impressive
what kind of ride is that your are using? also what are those stick made of? they sound kind of dead when you were doing the rim clicks around 6:05
benboone007 2 years ago
I thank you!
:-)
jouxplan 2 years ago
haha yeah i thought they migt be brushes but i couldnt really tell from the video if they were or not.

But I really don't think I can play it properly!! I have tried a couple of times in recent weeks (I promise) and it is just too fast for me!!! Copeland is A BEAST on that one :-)
Terry Williams is pretty special, certainly!
