To me this is still one of the most intensely vivid and deeply disturbing death scenes ever filmed for a slasher movie. It may not be as violent or as gory as some of the stuff seen today but it's so much more effective to me because of it's raw, unflinching realism.

I think there are several things that make this scene so effective. First is that she is downright terrified, and the way she hopelessly pleads for her life. Plus her death is so shocking and gruesome. The time this was released no one had seen a slit throat like this. Savini at his best. The music is also very dissonant, boldly effective.

Hi! Thanks for posting this. I'm pretty sure the original 1980 version showed the knife slide across her throat on camera, she lifted her head, and blood poured out. Photos of it appeared in Famous Monsters magazine and Tom Savini's book of makeup, Grande Illusions. How'd you find this? I'm really curious about it.

@theRealTimotheus No, it's not the same. The camera remains in this scene for a few extra seconds, showing more blood pumping out, as well as more of Annie's reaction as she clutches her throat and drops. Check this with the original cut, and you'll see.

@InfiniteAbstractions I have checked. It's the same thing. I saw this in the theater when it first came out; no difference at all. It's also on the R-rated (not unrated) DVD and VHS versions that were released in the US. It's no more gruesome than the scene where Kevin Bacon gets the arrow driven through his throat.
