if this is passive it actually sounds pretty hot and closer to normal MM sound. and people were acting like the passives didn't sound like that at all at places like talkbass
2 fingers not 1....tell that to James Jamerson (if he were still alive) or Geddy Lee. There are many times when 1 finger is acceptable and all you need.
sub do sound alot like stingrays, though they are usually a "recording" instrument, not a "performing" one...
for example the sub has no body shapings, therefor has a little more wood to make tone of, but it's really heavy to carry around your neck over a long shows evening...
i own a 5 string sub myself
oh and, of course these are active basses lol ... we don't want anything near fender sound in here ;)
@kraken1oti i tried to find out more about these passive subs ... they seem to be quite old and i can only find them used ... also the prices were like ~200€ ... and my active sub 5 was 1000€ (new instrument bought in 2006) ... so whatever the difference is except passive/active ... the active sub model is much more like a real stingray while the older passive model is more like OLP
imho musicman is supposed to be active ... as i mentioned earlier, for passive situation theres a JB ;)
@daLom i agree with you on that. I don't really like my passive bass i really want an active one but it's a musicman nonetheless and it still has a good tone especially in the studio i was pretty impressed with it.
@daLom I wouldn't compare the passive SUB Basses as anything close to the OLP "knockoffs". The only difference between the Active & Passive SUBs is that the Active models have a 2-band preamp added that was voiced like the "original" pre-1984 preamp redesign rather than current basses and a Battery Box. I also know a good deal of SR players that prefer the older passive models - both have their own sound. I just got scored a near-mint passive SUB 5, and can always install a preamp if want.
@kraken1oti There's actually no difference between the "S.U.B." & "SUB" instruments: EBMM simple changed it in marketing from S.U.B. (an acronym for "Sport Utility Bass") to "SUB" (a word that sounded the same and people would still recognize). This was because "S.U.B." said "Bass" twice and didn't make *any* sense regarding the S.U.B. 1 & 2 Guitars while "SUB" eliminated those issues and still conveyed the midrange nature of the line...
@kraken1oti ..the only difference between the Active & Passive SUB 4 and 5s was that the Actives have a 2-band preamp added that was voiced like the "original" pre-1984 preamp redesign rather than current basses, and that SUB Sterlings have a 3-band voiced like older 3-band preamps , There are no other differences except that Actives have a Battery Box. I own a SUB Sterling and just got a steal of a Passive SUB 5, and am interested in how the Passive EQ sounds as I'm an "active" guy. :-)
Hi. Cool video. You have your low string tuned to A. Is that how these basses are supposed to be tuned? Just wondering, I have one and I want to make sure it's tuned properly. Thanks for any help.
SUB was made for a cheaper market than the stingray.
Musicman made a statement that it was possible to make a really good quality (pro-level) instrument for cheap. They did this with the SUB's.
They are made in the same factory, in the USA, probably by the same hands.
The SUB's use poplar wood which is slightly less expensive - but sounds good, as you can hear. It however does not have as nice wood grain as the swamp ash used in the stingrays, and are therefore painted solid colours.
SanLouis Obispo Cali not far from where Fender Makes there's They were once owned by Fender but sold to Ernie Ball in '80. The pre '*0 stingRays are more valued but Ernie Balls are still hot basses!
A sub bass is not as expensive as the stingray the stingray is a bit better. But the SUB is also very good! ( I have one! ) please see my video's and rate and comment them! thx
The Stingray can have a 2-band as well. I think the difference is lack of options (basically only colours or fretted/fretless were available), cheaper wood/parts, and maybe cheaper labour (produced in other countries, although i doubt it)
musicman stingray is good. SUB basses arent that good. you should better buy another bass for that (800euro) amount of money. Ibanez ATK is nice alternative. So is G&L L2000 tribute
If you want to get more useful sounds out of that bass, may I suggest that you don't max out the EQ? It seems like that's the best thing to do, I guess, but there are so many more sounds than just open and closed, and a little goes a long way.
I have two P basses, a Yamaha RBX and a MMSUB. The SUB was bought last. It is an ABSOLUTE FUNK MACHINE!!!!!! I wanted a Musicman under 1G, and I got one. I put Fender Black Nylons and it is the real deal (the reg strings were good, too!). Got a feeling 20 years from now, this is gonna be one hot collector's item!
I demoed one today..I think this is a good bass for a beginner, but it's definitely not really an intermediate/professional level instrument.
Don't label me as a "hater", I have a fender bass on order currently, but I definitely aspire to own a stingray within the next year, but this bass doens't quite cut it. For it's price, it's amazing, but don't let the "American Made" tag make you think it's better than it is.
A good bass for a first bass, its not made in a sweat swop, it has a nice neck (Except for the paint) but the overall bass isn't as good as the standard fenders, which are a little cheaper.
There is when it's made to be an entry level guitar. If you are paying $700 for an US made guitar, vs $700 for a mexican built, which one is likely to be better? With labor standards in USA, the $700 american made guitar's price is inflated big time.
And as I said, i demoed one, and it has NOTHING on the Stingray of the Jazz or Precision. If you really need an American made instrument and don't mind some very low output pickups and a slow painted neck, it's not a terrible bass I guess.
i got sub in the uk for under 400 pounds absolute bargain! and it says on musicman forumn somewhere they stopped making them cause they werent making any money on them, as they werent prepared to buy in inferior parts from china there loss was our gain cheers musicman
its the same hubucker on SUB as on the real stingray right? cause on music mans website it sais that the pickup on sub is called music man humbucking. and so does it say on stingray. anyone know if it is the same?
I love my SUB, and now that there not making any more makes it all the more better lol ;) who knows maybe thell over make necks again, but its a perfect bass, INSANE tone, great neck (stingray neck), and all at a low low price of (insert price you bought here mine was 850 canadian) lol now it sounds like an add
