I can't get my ring finger to cover those two strings in the E chord he's showing at 1:40, at least not without touching the other strings. Arg. I've been playing the E with three fingers for a long time, now I'm having to relearn a basic chord. Man this is frustrating.
I use Eric Clapton's Choice Martin strings, light, guages 0.13, 0.17, 0.26, 0.35, 0.45, 0.56 and they sound great but I can never get the strings to bend like Stefan does. Does anyone know what strings and guage he uses?
I would be very suprised if he was using 13's. I had lessons from Stephan back in the 70's and he used D'Darrio P, Bronze then I think, but looking at this video and some others, they look like nickel wound. Tone/volume versus playability is always a balance between action and string gauge. If you want great tone and bendability (!) try Thomastic plectrum or spectrum bronze on Newtone strings. Incidently Stephan got his Vibrato from Clapton.
@88ragtime yeah, i really think he's the best in the business. his books and videos are amazing. He's so passionate about the blues, so good at what he does, and truly one of a kind.

@storekeeper80 use lighter strings .11 or .12

Would that be too slack to keep the tension on the neck right? Mine's a Martin guitar.

@storekeeper80 He uses John Pearse 80/20 light gauge strings now. I don't know what he used when this video was made however.

It seems I can never get in tune with you even with a fork or tuner, do you have that special MJH tuning? I can never seem to find.
