I LOVE NONOSINA! Nonosina, knows how to push the bar and be really creative! This is one of the groups, that I always look forward to watch when they compete, because they always incorporate something new and put a new spin and angle to the traditional ORI tahiti! Nonosina, in many ways reminds me of Les Grand Ballets DE Tahiti another favorite group, always doing something to captivate the mind and explore new horizons! Someone once said, its good to keep the old, and know the new!
one thing i have always criticized nonosina for is their consistent modernization of a dance that is purely based on tradition (and keeping the culture alive). although i don't agree with it and probably never will, i do think they deserve kudos in the performance department-they are phenomenal at performing.
This was not meant to be traditional or a Marques bird dance. The catagory was modern. MODERN. Not traditional, not intended to be traditional, I hope that anyone that watches this doesn't think this is traditional or Marques bird dance.
@bertati even though a dance is modern u still must use the roots of it which is tahitian dancing... im sorry but if u cant even tell what island its suppose to be than it sucks.. if ur gna make it modern atleast still keep it tahitian
I'm reading again a lot of critics about Nonosinas' work. I'm from Mexico and personally I can see an artist here, and an artist always inspire love and rejection. I don't think all the things Nonosina presents in his performances are truly traditional, but hey! What's entirely traditional? Only few things and my opinions is polynesian culture ist's build as rich & beautiful because of the mixing with antoher cultures. So let's don't hate him for doin' what polynesians do best!
Eh...I don't like this at all. This dance reminds me of Avatar - the movements, the music/sounds heard in the background, and even the outfits... If Pandora were to have a cultural dance it'd probably look something like this. Bring it back to TAHITI.
@aremar88 an understanding of the story, heck the language and culture might give you a better perspective on what they were doing... pure, intelligent and reflective... catch the message, you might change your mind...
@HeimanaProductionWA Lol I don't need to understand the culture if I am of the polynesian culture. This is a nice and well thought out performance, but I don't think it's a good reflection of what it's attempting to represent.
@HeimanaProductionWA At this point, I'm just laughing. I tried being nice and reasonable in my comments about this video, but now I'm just over it. You're probably 1/100th Polynesian if anything so you're clinging to the aesthetics of the dance and its "message." If you could relate, you'd know that the one thing about the Polynesian culture that separates us from the rest of the world is that it is preserved. This type of dance, IN MY OPINION and despite its creativity, undoes that.
@aremar88, that only took you 5 months to say? nice... baby girl/boy, your last name and village and I could tell you if we are related. I refuse to lower my heritage & be negative towards any of my family, including you & Nonosina. The essence of commonality btwn ALL POLYNESIAN cultures must be embraced and challenged. Weird? No, bc our language, customs and tradition base holds so many similarities. By your comments, I don't know what your defending but jealousy and competition.
@aremar88 apparently you weren't there at tahiti fete. you probably didn't know that Nonosina placed FIRST for overall ori rau AND best costumes, you're just so closed minded. It's ORI RAU of course it's supposed to be modern mixed with traditional. @HeimanaProductionWA you couldn't have said that any better!
@ayonishaa Where they were placed is irrelevant b/c it's MY opinion. Secondly, calling me closed minded for stating a reasonable opinion is dumb. Understandable if I wrote an opinion w/o explanation for why, but I did provide a rationale. Finally, I am part Tahitian (but 100% Polynesian) so I'm speaking as someone who has this heritage running through my veins & I'm saying that this entire performance is disappointing and looks like it'd be a great scene for Avatar.
@00samoan00 LMAOOO!!!!! NO MAN!! Thank u!! for WASTE YOUR TIME CRITICIZING US!!! i can tell u are one of our fans ;) thanks for HATING! u make nonosina even more famous! :)
