  • Wet the underside of the top - including the braces - with damp paper towels. That will really help. I had good luck pulling the top down on a "ladder braced" guitar by installing 2 wood bars across the braces and using very small bolts thru the bridge and the 2 wood bars. I could actually adjust the bridge height with that method and the extra mass actually increased the sustain of the guitar. I recommend using 2 permanent wood bars straddling the X braces because it bowed up once allready.

  • Greetings from Maine. I've got a question. I have a vintage Mountain brand guitar, solid top, etc. and the top bulges. The braces are solid, so it's just an age and stress issue. My idea is to notch into the blocks on both ends of the guitar, install a flat piece of steal length wise, and then install a threaded bolt down through the top, probably on the bridge itself, and slowly screw down the top. A quarter of an inche will do the trick. Any thoughts? I've already fabricated the parts.

  • Thanks - I have moved to Sedona, AZ and now have a much larger shop where I continue to make and repair guitars.

  • greetings from Australia, Ed!.....from what you've said in this vid, I know one thing for sure: I like you!!; keep up the good work and the fabulous ethos....

  • I am making a DVD called "Common Sense Guitar Repair" it will have a companion book. There will be videos of most guitar repairs including cracks in tops and backs. Each repair will be uploaded to youtube as soon as it is done. This will take me a while so in the meantime I may opt to answer specific questions directly thru email.

  • Ed, please show a minor crack repair behind the saddle or anywhere on the soundboard. I want to learn how to do this type of repair.

  • it is probably not just the neck - you can check neck bow with a straight edge. your guitar most likely needs a neck re-set. Guitars warp over time and the entire body top back and sides have most likely warped over time due to string pull. A typical neck set is traumatic for the guitar and expensive too. If you contact me thru my web site I can give you further advice on what to look for and how to fix.

  • hey, nice shop...i gotta 1943 H162 haromony...in pretty good shape, but the action is so high you can only use it for a slide guitar...it has no truss rod...just a steel reinforced neck...how would a guy straighten the neck so it could be played again like it was supposed to be,the back and sides are solid mohaugany, the top is probably spruce...but its dark, cause its old,the neck..i don't know, but it sounds great...but the action is so high,it's hard to play,...how do you think i could fix that?
