It's easier to play DGDGBD. That was when you switch to the part of the verse where you actually sing, you don't have to fret the 5th fret of the bottom string and you can instead use the 5th string open.

honestly you could just use the sixth string in place of the fifth string when you do that, since they're both the same D. They just sound slightly different in pitch and that stuff

True, but in DGDGBD you don't need an extra finger (i use my thumb for it) to fret that low G, you can just play the open A string, tuned a full step lower.
