  • Can you upload all of Slow Century? that would be sweeeeet

  • Look everybody it's thurston moore.

  • What song are they playing at the beginning of this video?

  • @AzWicker1 zurich is stained

  • steve is pretty calm when that rock hit him.... i wouldve flipped and threw the guitar... and what is this from??

  • Comment removed

  • why is everyone in this video other than the band members of pavement describing pavement as a crappy band?

  • he mooned the crowd...haha.

  • this was the end of the great lollapoloza shows,, within a few years the new "woodstocks" came out and nu metal meatheads ruined it all....

  • please don't think i'm defending the crowd, i hate the crowd, but don't they throw mud at every band? green day got mudded too

(if i was at the stage i would leave anyway even if it was "friendly" mud, i'm not a fucking circus clown to perform being mudded)

  • @nunopumpkin green day deserves it

  • @nunopumpkin That was woodstock and they were throwing mud on the stage, not AT green day. And it wasn't just mud with pavement, they were getting rocks and all sorts of other things thrown at them too.

  • Billy Corgan would laugh his ass off if he saw this video.

  • hhahaha scott is the man

  • Disregard the Floyd comment

  • Pink floyd 94 rfk

  • Beck, Hole, Cypress Hill, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sonic Youth, and others that day.

  • I was there, I did not throw mud though. Most of the people there weren't even from WV. Charlestown, WV is close to MD, PA, and VA.

  • what steve says after the rock hits him?

  • I saw this version of Lolla at Randall's Island, NY and I thought it was one ot their best line-ups ever, bar none. Superchunk Sonic Youth Moby and of corse Pavement on one bill is unvbelievvable in and of itself but my poor memory prevents me from naming all the others. One of the best festival shows ever. period, fin. I wi;; never forget it. (well, most of it)

  • lala-pa-loose a

back in the day, ok, ...now just whippin a dead horse...not pavement, the festival in general....

i have to play "UPROAR" this year......i hope it goes ok.....line up is.........ok. what do u expect from this world....over priced tickets, festivals that are thrown together, to line the fat cats pockets, and a generation, that is volatile, and looking for an excuse to go off! still the bands get the blame, or the water, or the mud,ect ...no-one goes 4 the music.its a drunken mess!

  • fuck its not like that at all in chicago

  • They should've thrown it back.

  • how calm Malkmus stays - incredible.

Those pathetic redneck blobs of human flesh, they feel perfectly at home in mud

  • A good argument for going to small clubs to see bands you support ... generally speaking, if the band you like is playing in a hockey stadium or an outside venue, it's time to find a new band.

Like the man said, "It looked like a good idea on paper." Nice that they're back together and touring again.

  • As a major Pavement fan, I would love to personally deliver an ass-whooping to each person who threw mud at them

  • tienes el resto de este doc. subelo eta muy chingon !!

  • stupid crowd

  • Virginia the southern state and everything is clear lol...

  • I was there an it was all and all a great overall event in my opinion. It was VERY hot to the point that my best friend just got ill and decided to just sit in a corner while the rest of us partied through the day. The fire hose they used to spray the crowd was insane. I didn't expect to be pummeled by water but that is the feeling you get from the amount of water they were pumping through but again, it was soo hot that it was a needed drenching that many of us welcomed.

  • It does suck for Pavement that they got pummeled by the mud. I don't think I saw that happen and I'm displeased to see the way my neighbors act. The crowd that was there was a mix and there was a lot of jock types that just came to mosh to some of their favorite radio songs and their idea of moshing is beating each other up. I had a good time and wish there was more video of the day that I could find.

  • Is that David Yow of Jesus Lizard shaving Steve West?

  • Indeed it is.

  • pavement was one of the best part of the Charletown. show that year. It's one of the reasons I strarted listening to them.

  • that's west virginia for ya!!

  • Pavement is spectacular, zurich is stained is amazing. fuck those guys

  • how comes? are they really difficult?

  • @piggystardust

    Fuck you!!

  • @piggystardust hmm. it's too bad most of the artists the world listens to, including Pavement, are and have been American. When was the last time a Belgian artist got big enough to come to the states at all? Plastic Bertrand? Also, America is a huge country and vastly different from region to region. to throw down such a blanket statement just speaks to your own ignorance.

  • @iamthepinkylifter

Listen man i'm not talking about the artists, but about the crowd. I worked for Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Hole, Nine inch Nails, Tool, The Rolling Stones and many many others. I know what i am talking about. .

  • @iamthepinkylifter @iamthepinkylifter

. The atmoshere @ gigs in the US is rubbish and almost always a poor crowd. Belgian festivals are the best in the world when you talk about line-ups, crowd, backstage,... ROCK WERCHTER is the favorite festival from almost every artist our band that played there.

  • @piggystardust lol, I'd much rather have a decent spot at a US festival then be in a mile wide crowd unable to see shit in a European festival.

  • whew... I'm tired.

  • all i know is pavement rocks, and hipster or no hipster you cant get away from that fact

  • HAHAHAHA. thank you you're hilarious as well.

  • Kunluv is either really funny, or the dumbest redneck I've ever met.

  • Oh no i'm repeating myself now i must really be an idiot.

  • No sorry that wasn't a very well thought out reply I've actually heard a decent amount of their other stuff and imho feel this video says more about them than what they claim to be their actual creative output.

  • FUck you!

  • @devfiant fuck yourself in the face wih a knife.

  • ah, how sad! Poor things....

  • I don't know why this happens, but it's not the first time! alternative music gigs sometimes get attended by rednecks, or other ignorant types, and they fuck up the concert. Last time this happened was two days ago, with Castanets-- 80% of the audience didn't let us listen comfortably and they would be talking loud and laughing all the time,... I know that IF we did the same to them in their shit country music concerts, they would kill us, that is the thing...

  • Nobody wants to see yo white ass. These niggas are geeked up.

  • They were an alternative rock band. You didn't see them play in this video.

  • Thurston :)

  • I don't think you were there, markd3z. The Beastie Boys and George Clinton didn't play. Beck, Elastica, Bosstones, Jesus Lizard did. Sonic Youth headlined. I came from PA, too.

  • that line up you spoke of minus bostones basically did this festival called summersault in Australia in the summer of 1996. Would have killed to have gone to that but alas i was only sixteen. Saw pavement one year later, best show ever.

  • you shure it was'nt Charleston WV and not Charles Town WV ? There is a differance.

  • It was Charles Town .. Held at the recently demolished Shenandoah Downs racetrack

  • simply Pavement giving 'pearls to pigs'.

  • I was there....George Clinton and the P Funk All-stars were incredible.... and so were the Beastie Boys.

  • this place is like right up the street from me! i wish they still had this there

  • Most of the people here were not from West Virginia, this location is in the extreme eastern panhandle of WV. Most of the people came from DC and Maryland suburbs. I came from PA.

  • I was at this show. This was the only time I ever "saw" Pavement. I was pissed this happened. You fuck dicks that threw shit at them fucking suck. I mean, I sat through bands I didn't want to see, I didn't throw shit at them. Why couldn't you assholes let me get my money's worth instead of chasing them off stage because you couldn't mosh to them.

  • i wouldve tossed my guitar at the crowd, instead of walking off and crying, lollapalooza sucks

  • that's some delusion...some band that got booed offstage finished lollapaloza yeah right

  • hi thurston

  • bunch of assholes rejecting alternative rock music. Look where popular music is now. SUCKS

  • There was a real shift in public taste around 95-96. Most people weren't interested in "alternative" rock anymore. That's when I started to feel old.

  • these guys are total dudes.

love that wood paneling at the end.

  • poor dudes. keep on truckin'

  • Is that David Yow at the end, shaving off Steve West's beard?

  • pretty sure it's the guitar player, Spiral Stairs (Scott Kannenberg?).

  • No. That guy looks nothing like Scott.

  • it looks and sounds exactly like David Yow to me.

  • I don't know, but it's not Scott Kannberg as that douchebag danieldefoe said.

  • Definitely Yow. Mac MacNeilly (Jesus Lizard Drummer) is 2 places to West's right too.

  • lollapalooza was bound to fail anyway, isn't it interesting that that whole batch of awful Nu-Metal and "Bling-Bling" vacuous hip-hop came into popularity around the same time? people got real dumb real quick.

  • sure i do, you can even spot me from shows up on this site!

  • Or maybe it's just that you are fucking retarded. So-called "nu-metal" is for Neanderthals.

  • Thrashing about like a fucking idiot shows that you know a lot about music? LOL.

  • and his friend now...and you're total fucking idiot

  • Nu metal???? Are you serious??? Hahahaa

  • Of course that this fucking crowd violated Pavement, but instead of people from other states in this topic becoming Ching,we should unite us, in fact, is what the world needs.

  • this was in 1995 i konw it was the only year i went to palooza and only because pavement and sonic youth were there along with beck, cypress hill, super chunk, and we walked out of the main stage when hole played fuck hole

  • actually this was in atlanta and pavement did 2 sets one on the second stage too no one threw mud we love them down south they are really nice guys and a very hospitable the very last time i saw them at the 40 watt in 1999 they let me and my friends hang out on the bus it was a highlight of my life

  • sorry guys my english isn't good

I didn't understand what bob said about his equipment

  • Haha Spiral Stairs is priceless. I would have the same thing to these trailer trash human feces.

  • they are in the middle of playing "zurich is stained" i would kill to hear that song live.

    fuck that crowd

  • I'm really glad I bought the Slow Century DVD. So awesome!

  • hahaha! I remember this band fucken hillarious

  • I doubt there were very many West Virginians at that show. Charlestown, WV was chosen as the Washington DC Lollapalooza location because it could hold such a large outdoor concert. So it was a bunch of DC losers who did this. This was the same crowd that ruined a Cranberries free concert at the Capitol Memorial day in '95 while moshing and stage diving during "Linger." A bunch of spoiled rich suburban teens.

  • The year before the Smashing Pumpkins almost ended their set early because these stupid fuckers were throwing water bottles at the stage. Idiots.

  • Really? I thought WV was just full of trash. Like Virginia's trash that they just threw over their shoulder...

  • WV is nothing more than a trash bin. Look into how and why it was formed. The short story is that it's a bunch of douches too poor to own slaves so they became a "non-slave" state to balance out the USA at a time when slave and non-slave states we're trying to co-exist before the American Civil War.

  • so wv is a state made of trash?

  • wow...what does that have to do with this video? we get it, you know your history.

but yeah...Charles Town is on the eastern pandhandle, a very small sliver of land wedged between Virginia and Maryland. It's extremely close to DC and some other larger cities like Baltimore. Most of the people who went there were not from WV.

  • yea, WV isn't all like that. Every state has it's trash.

  • That would blow if I lived in West Virginia and was excited to see Pavement, and some dicks ruined it for me by throwing shit at the band for no reason. I'd want to tell the band "Not everyone in West Virginia is like that."

  • Haha He should of went Axel Rose on their ass haha

  • Bet all those mud slipping hippies were Smashing Pumpkins fans.

    Bastards.

    Pavement rules!

  • don't call them hippies

    real hippies don't throw anything

  • except frisbees.

  • what the other guy said is tru the smashing pumpkins sucked billy corgan claims indie bands are afraid to make good music he was on a major label and his music is just distorted guitars and nasily whining. all of pavments albums are great and there on matador

  • Corgan's point was more that people were afraid of being perceived as pompous and arrogant for having an idea, so they dumbed themselves down to be accepted. He wasn't saying they were bad musicians. Frankly, I agree. I mean, there aren't that many indie bands with the balls to overcome all the bullshit pressure placed on them by their 'scene'. It's a shame, too, because a lot of indie music sounds just as homogenized as mainstream music.

  • I agree with the sentiment, although I think there are quite a few indie bands that have resisted being pigeonholed and have separated themselves from the expectations of their peers (Pavement being one of them).

Still, I hate the fact that the independent world has started to become as sterile and bland as the mainstream. It's really a shame.

  • Pavement are like one of my favourite bands ever but so are Smashing Pumpkins (not as much though and i can't stand Billy Corgans attitude).

    Damn, sorry.

  • thats really crappy fuck those people

  • those mudslingers belong at a klan rally, not a rock n roll show.

  • I was there, about 40 feet away from the stage. They played six songs. I was dissapointed that they didn't play more, but I understood completely.

  • Fuckin disrespect for a cool band

  • I know!

Pavement was such a good band.

It's not even like they were playing poorly, either.

  • a redder shade of neck on a whiter shade of trash

  • West Virginia, where at least 20% of the adult population is essentially illiterate. You're probably all related, too.

  • david yow shaved 'im

  • sorry it really was in 1995.

  • Dont think so.

  • This was Lollapalooza 95 not 94

  • Big props to Spiral for flipping off and mooning the fucking audience, mud and rocks be damned.

  • Screw lollapalooza and west virginia.

This is a pointless thing to say, I know.

    It's obvious.

  • This video pretty much (still) proves the point that W.V. is the asshole of America. Enough said. Scott was downright nice to the audience at the end, they really should have given the crowd some "sights" they would have never forgotten.

  • yeah, he should have given them the old "fruitbasket" while he was mooning them (if you catch my meaning)

  • Does anyone know what Malkmus says just before he sturms off?

  • I hear "Thanks.. [...] hitting me so many times."

  • I think it was "Okay..[...] hitting me so many times."

  • what a bunch of mud tossing tossers haha

  • Was that David Yow from the Jesus Lizard shaving Steve West's face at the end?

  • Yeah, it looks like him. They cut the part immediately after where Yow whips out his scrotum & rubs it over West's newly shorn chin.

  • buh?

  • Pavement is awesome, they were doing it before Nirvana got famous, and West Virginia is....West Virginia.

  • wow... what a classy crowd. fuck west virginia.... they wouldnt know a good band if it slapped them in the face.

  • that is so true. Regardless of the band too it's just plain disrespectful to do something like that to an artist.

  • thank you

  • cool.
