It's true about the Mercedes build quality. Since mid/late 90s they've had horror stories with rust primarily. Some fell to bits with rust after 3 years. The 190 and the mid 90s SL were the last proper ones. I've got a CLK430 which is awesome but you know it's gonna fall to bits sooner or later.

Nope, but things are much more affordable when relocating as I did from Denmark to the US *lol*. Comparing prices I paid 25% of what the car would cost me in Denmark due to VAT and taxes ( in Dk 25% VAT + 180% taxes - yes 180%)

I have imported my last 3 cars from Germany and saved ALOT of money.My current car is a Touareg but i`m looking 2 get a Merc now,but i`m not in a hurry.I have had no problems but i`ve heard horrorstories.And when the car arrives in Norway it needs fuel costing aprox 2-2.50 U.S dollars pr liter.Thats 10 dollars pr gallon.It`s legalized blackmail

God I'm getting sick of Jeremy's constant illogical whining. You're seriously doubting the quality of a Mercedes-Benz? Top Gear shouldn't talk trash, cause all they do is powerslide it around their airfield for an hour or two. Maybe you should actually *drive* the car? My dad bought a 200 E240 with 110k on it and so far: the wings (which were replaced 3 years ago) are cornflakes, the quarter-panels aren't far off, the air-conditioning compressor rattles very loudly, one of the glovebox lid hinges is broken, the mountings for the back box rusted through and it fell off, the crankshaft position sensor failed and the main wiring loom came adrift all in the space of 2 years and 10,000 miles. Not great to be honest.

@TheDarkangel025 My point was mostly that Top Gear can't judge about that, cause all they do is burn a few tires and slide around. Still, I can't judge that car without knowing what the previous owner did to it tbh. That car could be an isolated case as well. Really, you can't tell unless you compare a lot of cars who are similar and control for all sorts of effects. Overall, I think MB has one of the best technology/maintenance/durabil­ity-records.

@MrCharming123 He can judge Mercedes reliability and quality as he's had Mercs from the cost cutting era and all they did was break. My dad's Merc is 10 years old and is already falling to pieces. His 15 year old £1000 Volvo is more reliable, has no rust whatsoever and everything works.. My mate's dad also had a 10 year old Merc and it was equally unreliable and poorly built, they all are from 95-05. I would say that in recent times Merc has one of the worst reliability and quality records.

yeah but their german cars, i mean beemers aren't so reliable either(i love my beemer), but its not really meant to be the most reliable, and i am sure you know about the plague of audi which took it off the charts, and audi is slowly coming back(GREAT CARS!), mercedes had cut down which was a terrible mistake, the jaguar, used to be in league's higher than the beemer itself but now it's coming back, thank GOD!

Look at all their AMG cars that rival BMWs for example. AMG has more tech toys, but they're never anywhere near as dynamic as ///M cars are, and it shows in their track times. Merc doesn't normally make good performance cars.

Even the Mercedes Hypercar, the $300,000 SL65 Black Series, with 661 horsepower and 740 pounds of torque, could only manage a 1:23 round this track, slower than a standard Ferrari 430 and Z06.

I hope the new SLS is good.

Problem is mercedes, like everything else, have become dumbed down for the stupid masses. For the sake of profit.That is why we dont see the same quality as old school mercs. But still, they are probably the best built prestige marque out there. But if I was old enough to afford insurance on one, then I would buy an old school Merc for under £3k, which would be just as good, if not better, as a 50k new one.
